I'm just waiting for Gil and his A.F.L. cohorts to try and throw a spanner into the works, and make it hard for us to get JOM, and/or Tom Mitchell.

Why would they do that? I'd hope they show the same consistency they showed when Geelong bought the flag last off season

Because we are Hawthorn, and have proved to be too good for the other clubs, so they would start thinking equalization.

Geelong are way worse. How they get away without any criticism...i will never understand.

You are probably right though. Guess we wait and see.

geelong is just a Victorian, and while they have been very successful this century, their history is not in the same street as ours.

Clarko's comments re assessing adjudications around tackles etc were the set up for the future. Expect to see us almost rugby passing it better than anyone in the near future creating a massive focus (read crackdown) on it. This will stabilise things around HTB/Illegal disposal.

In the meantime teaching our guys to make their tackles stick and preventing their opponent from easily disposing the ball (Perhaps Cyril can run that session) will be needed.

Given the drums are beating louder about Fagan's departure there'll be som e off field roles that need to be shored up to ensure our destination like status is maintained.

Friday night may or may not be the end of our latest era of glory. We looked tired and overly gorged on success the other night, and that is absolutely understandable.

However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we re-grouped, turned it round, and used this year as motivation to go again next year, after everyone has written us off. Just like we did in 90-91.

Ultimately, at some point in the next 1-4 years we will fall back off the mountain, and need to re-build. No question about it. And I am ready for it.

Whilst that early-mid 90s period saw us get hit hard by the new equalisation rules put in place specifically to curb our dominance, and go through our darkest period as a club and longest premiership drought since our horrendous early days, I can't see that happening again this time around. Our club is magnificently and intelligently run, we have one of the greatest coaches in history, who is very forward thinking and still young, and I feel hugely confident that, after maybe a few years of pain, we will bounce back BIG and be ready to challenge for a flag again in the next 5-10 years.

What do you think?
Next year with the expected ins that are on their way. Cats look like doing it this year after bringing in Danger, Henderson Smith etc. after missing the finals altogether last year. Quoting the old saying "never write off the Hawks"!!!!!

Would like to see the Bulldogs' drafting during that period.

Bulldogs drafting has been massively boosted by the father-sons they picked up. More than just being good players, they are Bulldog through and through.

Syd/WB's drafting really stands out for their rookie picks - something we've been ok at without reaching the same levels.

Swans have done exceptionaly well with mid-late picks. WB nailed their early picks which is a must if you want out and out star power of which Hawks/Syd already have in place.

Geez I would love a Parker/Aliir type in the draft this year.

We may already have them in Woodward/Brand but here's hoping either way!

So, expressed as a percentage, how likely are we to get:
Jarman
Vickery
Mitchell
O'Meara
Any others?
??

2017, much like 2016, will be a season where we reload a bit and hedge our bets. We retain the ageing guns and continue to blood fresh talent and see where that gets us by seasons end. If by round 14 we are in top 4 contention we field are best squad and hone in on the flag, if not, we continue to blood kids knowing that we will need to chop some dead wood at seasons end. That is basically what we did in 2016 and pretty much the only approach we can take. I would be very surprised, given the quality of the opposition, if we were in contention though. I would be focussing more on player development than winning the flag for the next couple of seasons. We need to be getting in quality players that are 22 and under wherever possible. These are my expectations for 2017 and hopefully that allows me to keep things in perspective rather than going in thinking that we are a real crack and going through the disappointment of not being in the race. We should all be prepared for this next phase.

The only problem with Aliir Sven, is he never seems to stop fumbling the ball and sending it wastefully to ground. A player that I would like to see at the Hawks is a player who is similar to Aliir from North being Majak Daw.

With all due respect.........NO!!!

In the fumble department, Majak makes Aliir Aliir look like Shaun Burgoyne. Has had a tampon* career at North so he is hardly going to be our forward or ruck solution going forward. He might win the car one day but there's not much else there.

Our list will be stronger in 2017 than it is now, and we were one kick away from a Prelim, so I can definitely see it.

Natural progression of a couple of youngsters. An improved midfield. A tall forward. A refocused Clarko.

We'll be up there.
Please elaborate to give me some comfort.

For mine so many of our list cant improve and of those who can a fair degree arent even certain of making it.

Geez Rog, the prison walls have gotten to you.

Let's go with....

In 2017 we will add an inside midfielder who averages 28 disposals and 6 tackles a game.

I see us right up there in 2017. If flog sides like Geel and Syd can do it, then this mighty football club WILL outclass these sides.

Mark it down now. This years disappointment will drive this football club in 2017.

Hodge and Gibbo will realise next year will be their last (assuming they do play on) and will be up for it. They won't leave anything out on the field in the quest for one more shot at glory. Our midfield will be bolstered with enough talent to give our forwards some quality inside 50s once more, and our score averages should increase as a result.

Don't expect anything from Roughie next year. Hope, but don't expect. If he does return, his output may drop from what we remember of him. If we can get another decent ruck and KPP in trading, then we're all set to jaegernaut the crap out of the 2017 season. Introduce a young boy named Jarman into the fold and it's 1991 all over again.

:rainbow::rainbow::rainbow::rainbow::rainbow:

Very half glass full there. Not sure if justified optimism.

Hodge and Gibson would've given all they had for the last 2 months of the season, yet we faded so badly. 2 games on top clear remember, then lost 4 of the next 6.

If we are going to win in 2017, Hodge and Gibson can no longer be who we are dependent on to win games.

It'll be interesting to see the top 10 of the best and fairest. Without looking at stats and studying all 24 games intensely, I think we're over reliant on the 4 veterans this year. This is when we should be phasing them out, but none of our youth is either ready to step up, or not good enough to.
