Very half glass full there. Not sure if justified optimism.

Hodge and Gibson would've given all they had for the last 2 months of the season, yet we faded so badly. 2 games on top clear remember, then lost 4 of the next 6.

If we are going to win in 2017, Hodge and Gibson can no longer be who we are dependent on to win games.

It'll be interesting to see the top 10 of the best and fairest. Without looking at stats and studying all 24 games intensely, I think we're over reliant on the 4 veterans this year. This is when we should be phasing them out, but none of our youth is either ready to step up, or not good enough to.

I see this type of rhetoric bandied around a lot, and I can only scratch my head. That's probably been said about 60% of 200 gamers ever to play the game. We have absolutely NO idea how good x or y player is going to be until they are given continuity and at least 50 games.

Hell, people said that about Michael Tuck in his early days. 'who is this skinny kid, he'll never be any good.'

20 years, 426 games, 7 flags and the Hawthorn captaincy later, I think he kinda proved them wrong....
 
I say play Hodgey as a permanent forward. He will rip the comp a new one and will give him one more massive chance at glory, before he hangs up the boots.

Those drafted 2015 and 2014 I think are too early to expect too much. That's what I meant by not ready to step up and replace Gibson, Hodge, Burgoyne or Mitchell.

The kids from 2013 and before, not currently in the best 22, the only ones that I think can come in and have an input are Hartung and Brand.

How they perform at Box Hill should give an indication how good they are playing and if the coaching/selection team see anything that can be utiltised in the seniors. If they've played over 50 VFL games, and haven't shown anything worthy of a promotion, do we assume they will come good after 100? Those kind of players are good decent players at best. Players that can help us finish 6-8th, but not take us to the flag.

Just pointing out he has avoided any surgery which is a huge plus. If the treatment is successful he should bounce back pretty well being young and fit.

Libba Wallis and Hunter in those years where the expansion teams were getting top picks is the key for the doggies - Alopng with the Rookie success of Dahlhous (who is going to be better than Gary jr) and the smartness to pick up Bontempelli (who looks for all the world like the best player in the comp right now)

You can say the same for Burgoyne and perhaps even Sammy. Although we could have enough small players in the forward line.
 
Thought I posted in this thread, but I guess it was a different one.

Hodge would be better suited down back to help Gibson in the 3rd man up spoil and intercept mark role.

He's too slow and not agile enough up forward to pressure their defenders. They'll just rebound it out easily.

The last line is also a reason he shouldn't be in defence. How can you be 3rd man up if you can't get to the contests.

He's one of our best readers of the play. He positions himself so well. He's done that role in 2008 and he wasn't quick then either. If his opponent runs to somewhere Hodge doesn't think is dangerous, he'll just end up being loose man. This is not a foreign role to him.

He marshals the troops from back there too.

This is the only thing I've managed to find that shows where he's been playing on the ground. This is only for Rounds 1 and 2 I think.
