Thought I'd say how I was really happy with what we did against Collingwood for the most part and how he was a lot of the reason why we went so much better than normal.

We bombed it down the middle instead of doing the normal chip around stuff from the kickouts, which opened up more opportunities for coast to coast goals which lots of people complained about us not having...

We played on more and were far more aggresive than normal.

I thought Longmire did a great job, maybe he should of moved LRT onto Cloke earlier but who knows what Dawes would of done than... I thought Longmire did great.

We weren't beaten in that many matchups that I can remember...

Good job Horse. :thumbsu:

Happy with the effort, but Andrejs as the sub was wrong. Need somebody who can impact the game, rather than another 6'3" part time key position player.

What did he do that was so special? Bad call on the sub; still no forward structure;, still heckin'g about with Jesse White, who was very brave as back-up in ruck but who's career is not being helped; not sure what he's doing with Goodes.

Players were outstanding for effort and intensity, but had Collingwood kicked straight we'd have been smashed again.

Don't think Longmire should be taking any special pride in his own performance. Making sure we beat the Crows in Adelaide is what he needs to ensure this week.

Goat... While I don't think he deserves to be singled out for praise we have to remember that one of the main gripes with our games against Collingwood in the past 6 years was that we constantly went in with the same game plan expecting a different result.

The worst part of our losses to them IMO was how predictable and slow we were with the ball, especially when coming out of defense.

I agree that we would have been smashed by them had it not been for their poor kicking but we simply don't have the cattle to compete with them. The game plan was a breath of fresh air IMO. We played on a lot more than we have done previously and we were unpredictable with our kick ins.

Agree on White... He needs to settle at full forward. It's difficult to work the rucking situation without him at the moment though.

Mr Goat. Part of me wants to be critical of Horse for not playing Goodes in the middle more but the answer is so glaringly obvious to everyone that there is something were missing.

Is there an injury issue, or an old injury like his knees, which we know have had there problems. as they get older are they only doing part of the job. Are his legs rely much more on his muscle than most for his run. This can result in more lactic fatigue in the musle and only allowing Goodes to spend a certian part of game time on intense midfield duties. Thus needing to rest more time aerobic recovery, hence more time forward?

Just a theory but a blind monkey can see we need Goodes in the middle so if he's not there something else must be the cause of his absence from it

Why so negative?

He has turned Shaw into a offensive tagger he was quite good on Thomas last night.

Bad kicking is bad football, i saw much more flair intensity and boldness from our team to go down the line to our talls than any other years under Roos.

No forward structure well its hardly Horse fault Bradshaw broke down and We have a 19yr old carrying our forward line, yes White hasnt come on as we hoped but he adds a target.

As for Goodes well maybe if he stopped looking at the umpires after every contest whinging he would get more ball.

Wasn't part of the reason given a few years ago when we first tried him there was that it was to help extend his career?

I'm not too sure what people expect our coaches to do regarding Goodes.
There comes a time in a super star's career when they can no longer be expected to crash & bash their body for a full game, week after week, year after year.

What some on here forget is that Goodes is near the end of his career & Longmire is only guilty of protecting him as a forward so that he can prolong this sensational career.

Every time Goodes has to go in the middle, it only shortens his time in the game IMO.
As a power forward, he can squeeze out a few more years.
He's been OK as a forward but his kicking has been a little off. We need to stop thinking that he can just go in the middle & fix everything everytime we are being beaten.

We have lost to ONLY Geelong, Coll, Hawthorn & Carlton (twice). Combined, these 4 teams have lost only 7 games, mostly against each other. Carlton lost to an in form Eagles yesterday who are sitting 5th. We beat the Eagles over in Perth. So we are thereabouts which means in his first year, Longmire has been terrific, blooding some promising youngsters while at the same time keeping the Swans a competitive unit.
We gave the Magpies a shake the other night. Not to mention we bruised them.
Name me another person (with credentials) you'd like coaching this club & I'll shut up on the topic.
But until then, 7 wins, 1 draw & 5 losses to the top 4 teams is a fair effort for a first year coach!

I'm going to put it to all of you who haven't realised it yet...

We have not got the side who could of done anymore on the weekend.
We played as well as we could with what we had.

We have Goodes, Bolton, McGlynn and Kennedy doing there stuff.
But we have a lot of passengers at the moment because of our injuries and last year retirements.

We had the best gameplan and structure we could use and were lucky that Pies goal kicking was so horriable. Goodes, Bolton and co did all they could and for the ones to critisise Goodes should GTFO. Why should the bloke risk a few weeks of the park just to risk himself crashing the pack etc for a few passengers not to assist or run in both directions.

Roos said last week that the way he would be playing Goodes at the moment is to put him up FF at the beginning and if he kicks some goals early on keep him there and if not move him back to midfield to get more touches on the ball and raise his confidence.

Seems to me Longmire is doing something similar.

Flip side, is he has more chance of getting worn down in a marking contest in the forward line. Would still run a hell of a lot at CHF as well.
Goodes is outstanding at protecting himself when in the middle. His durability is unbelievable but he has been slow to get up from a lot of marking contests this year. I think that will wear him our quicker than spending some time in the middle. Rarely is Goodes at the bottom fo the pack taking hits in the middle, he is ready to get and go.

Goodes' athletic ability and general fitness and durability is amazing for someone aged 31. Not many AFL players can sustain such a high level of football for so long without missing games.

I genuinely think he has at least 2 years until we really see him slow down. Then just put him forward for the rest of his career. While he is up and still so amazingly athletic and still capable of winning games consistently by himself, he has to be in the middle.

It's the best I've seen us play this year*

Also am pretty over seeing posts like "if collingwood had of kicked straight they would have won by 10+ goals"

Bad kicking = bad football. Ifs and buts are no excuse.

*I didn't see us play port or brisbane but those games cannot be included for obvious reasons**

**They are shit

Shaw was being tried in that role last season.

I wasn't having another go at Longmire; I just thought a thread toasting him was inappropriate. He did no more, or less, on Saturday night than he's done all year.

I rate Longmire, we needed a new approach for the Pies from previous years and he gave us exactly that. He is one of the calmest in the compitition too (not unlike Roos)

Nice to see both teams havin a good chat after the game too :)

True but it's Collingwood's doing. It's not like them being inaccurate translates into us playing well. Once the ball is in the Pies hands for a set shot, the Swans had already failed at playing well during those two quarters.

We did play better than I thought we would but Collingwood were ordinary by their standards and still clearly superior.

I think Longmire is still in the honeymoon phase as the senior coach and I won't be joining in any roasting or toasting until the end of the season at the earliest. To be honest, I would say that right now he isn't deserving of either anyways!

Nothing to toast. Has not proven himself yet. He Inherited a good list and has made it look poor.

Longmire has an unhealthy obsession with having 190cm+ players in the wrong position:

Spangher, a career defender, is playing in the reserves as a forward
Roberts-Thomson was played as full-forward despite being our best defender much of last year
Grundy was played as a forward last night
Lewis Johnston, the best kick for goal in our squad and a superb under-age forward, is being "converted" into a defender
Everitt, a roaming half-forward, is being used as a key position player or, worse, in defence
Goodes, a midfielder, is being used almost entirely as a forward

I guarantee he was desperate to get Bradshaw back so he could play him as fullback. If you throw enough shit at a wall some of it will stick, because Reid is a very promising forward despite him being a defender through most of his junior career. Was that worth the numerous other screw-ups? No.
