At the moment our track and field team is improving, but is still not that great.
Lets look at some of the young athletes that will be the core of the Australian team sometimes:
Matt Shirvington (22 years): 100m PB 10.03
1 year ago, the Sun-Herald published a list of all the major runners in the world (Greene, Thompson, Boldon, etc,.) and showed their PB when they were just 20 years old and Shirvington had run faster than the lot of them had when they were 20 years, so in Athens and 2008 he will be right up there.
Georgie Clarke (16 years): 1500m PB 4.06.7
What a brilliant young runner, She is the world junior (under 21) champion over 1500 metres. She also holds the u/16 u/18 and u/20 Australian record for 1500 metres.
Henari Veratou (16 years): 100m PB around 10.8
Hes the lesser known out of all these athletes. He is goes to Scots College in Sydney - a rival school of my son's. He is from Papau New Guinea and is the Australian under 18 champion when he was just 15 years of age.
There are probably more than just those 3. However Clarke and Shirvington will be right up there in Athens. Veratou will probably have to wait to 2008 to be in the limelight. However, a lot can happen in 8 years.
