Opinion Looking Back on 2012 Draft

We had 3 Top 20 Picks and we Picked:

  • Grundy
  • Kennedy
  • Broomhead
Grundy is a Home Run. Kennedy was a Bust and Broomhead is looking like he could also be a Bust.

That is not a good Hit Rate there. Though looking back on the Draft there was not a Huge Amount of Good Players Picked after that.

Good Players are:

  • Mason Wood
  • Rory Atkins
  • Ben Jacobs
  • Mark Hutchihgs
  • Sam Gibson
  • Lee Spur
  • Callum Sinclair
  • Matthew Tabaner
  • Jake Lloyd
  • Dan Rampe
We also Picked:

  • Ramsey
  • Williams(Rookie Promoton)
  • Martin
  • Dwyer
  • Frost
  • Hudson
  • Yagmoor
  • Ben Richmons

We had some very good Picks and really only got Grundy. He was a HomeRun but he also fell in our Laps as he was Ranked as a Top 2-5 Prospect

Could of been Better

The fact you have Sam Gibson and Ben Jacobs as the good players taken after Broomhead suggests it was a pretty weak draft.
And the jury is still out on Hutchings and Taberner as being good players.

A make or break year for Broomy.

Even if Broomy doesn't come on you'd be inclined to give this draft a pass just because of Grundy.
It also looks better when you consider we got compensated by Kennedy by being half the Howe trade.

The disappointment for me is Ramsay. I believe if he didn't miss 2015 and 2016 he'd be an established member of our best 22.

Its disappointing neither Martin or Frost were able to make it as well. Would have been great to get a hit with one of the rookies

The only player I’d want to have now is Rampe who is a gun. The 2012 draft was destroyed by the GWS pre-draft selections, and was a very poor draft to have so many selections in.

The fact we actually got Grundy is a godsend, he’s easily the fifth most valuable player behind Whitfield, Wines, Stringer and Daniher, with Rampe, Vlastuin and Viney the only other top tier selections (could make an argument for Macrae but I think he’s a tier below).

Total bust. Could have used two of the picks and traded in something relevant to our chances in 2013. Grundy was a steal, but 1 out of 3 is not good odds, not counting the other picks. Draft was weakened but we pay all these recruiters to work that out don't we?
nb. two of those picks came from trading out players. We are going backwards if we trade out for picks then the picks fail.

You need to look at who we traded out to make that call. Would keeping Dawes and Wellingham have made us go backwards further? Likely....

And also what value we received from on trading the players we have drafted. Given Kennedy was on traded to land Howe, using your logic he wasnt a complete bust as we managed to get value for him on the trade table. Would have been worse if we had delisted him and got nothing in exchange.

As for 2012, looks like a weak draft in hindsight so landing Grundy alone makes it a win or at least breakeven.

Dave's good player list sums up what a terrible draft it was. Our main error was trading into such a weak draft in hindsight.

Good Point but we did have a Choice with Dawes

I don’t think “ trading into the draft” was necccesarily the strategy. There were a few moving parts. Basically it was the start of a rebuild and after toppping up in recent years with brown ball jolly krakouer and Tarrant, that maybe youth would be a good idea

Sort of agree ... but Dawes and Wellingham were valued at a first round pick each when we traded. Looking at what they are worth now, or were worth a year or two down the track I am not so keen on as a way of valuing our trading. With those two first round picks we should have done better. We might judge the 2012 year overall as being ok due to Grundy but, AFAIAC, those two picks were poor.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the strategy was a sound one. Draft is always a lottery.

Broomhead has a year to prove himself and if he does maybe that draft wasn’t such a bust for Collingwood.

How the **** is De Goey a bust? Still has plenty of opportunities to prove his worth and he certainly isn’t one on talent.

I don't think he has many Chances Left
