Looking to the draft...

And I wonder how many trades have fallen over because the player doesn't want to live in Adelaide? That's a significant disadvantage we have in the trading game IMO.

I think it was more motivated by the fact that GC had all the draft picks, leaving bugger all for the rest of us to choose from. It was easier to get the talent through trading than it was through drafting.

Lets look at those shall we..

Tarrant - only wanted to go to Collingwood
Kennedy - was a reluctant part of the Judd trade.
Jolly - only wanted to go to Collingwood
Mumford - may have been available if we'd approached him (who knows), but at the time we had a full roster of ruckmen
Burgoyne - wanted out of Port, I'm not sure he would have ever entertained the idea of playing for the team up the road.
Gibson - Was seen at the time as being a far lesser player than the ones we already had (and rightly so).

So.. of the top liners you've listed, only Mumford might have been a possibility - and we already had his position covered abundantly.

Now to the others..
Kennedy, McGlynn, Shaw - cost Sydney nothing, would be nothing but another list clogger, keeping us stuck in the 2008 timewarp if we'd chased them.
Mattner & Hudson - both left Adelaide, why did you bother listing them?
Schneider - could have been useful at the time, given our shortage of small forwards, ultimately nothing more than a list clogger though.
Ray - Widely considered to be useless at the Dogs, why would we have wanted him?
Warnock - only wanted to go to a Victorian team.
Ball - only wanted to go to Collingwood.
Schulz - Was a dead man walking who went to the only club prepared to throw him a lifeline, credit where it's due - he's turned out to be 10x the player he was at Richmond.

There's nothing there that I regret us not chasing - and most of them weren't available to us anyway. At best, we'd have a bunch of list cloggers keeping us stuck in 2008.

What we need (and needed) is elite talent, especially in the midfield. There's been very little of that going around, other than Judd - who only wanted to go back to Victoria (and subsequently chose Carlton when he saw the cardboard money on offer).

The only thing I'll say about that is in my opinion Kennedy and McGlynn at Sydney are far from list cloggers and a tough inside mid and a handy small forward (24 goals so far this year) would be pretty handy right about now (and cost nothing)

Mumford - had his postion covered abundantly - really? By Maric, Griffin and Moran. We were so comfortable with our ruck stucks that we went out and poached a 17 gamer to lead our rucks 12 months later? I'm guessing that we didn't just go for Jacobs because Griffin wanted to leave, but rather that we (clearly) had a major deficiency in our ruck stocks.

As for Schneider - was actually a pretty handy small forward at the time and went on to kick 28, 34 and 39 goals as a small forward in 08-10 - have we got a genuine small crumbing forward who has come close to kicking those numbers in recent years. He has played 178 games as a 27 year old and as a small forward is averaging for 2011 after as limited pre season - 16 dispsosal, 3.8 marks 1.2 goals and 4.5 tackles. He finshed equal fifth in the St Kilda best and fairest last year after kicking 39 goals and leading the club for goal assists. - a team that includes players such as Riewoldt (yes injured for most of last year), Hayes, Montagna, Dal Santo, Fisher, Gilbert (last years version) and played in the grand final. He is far from a list clogger. Seriouly - you think that Doughty is a very good player and not a list clogger but you think Schneider is? The crazy thing is we may well have been offerred him for Mattner (rumour) and we chose to get Symes instead with the second rounder.

Grow up and pull your head out Carl, you're changing the point to suit your delusional arguement.

You first stated we should get stars, other clubs were doing it, you listed junk time players who you would hate at our club. Stevens, Symes, Douglas types.

You said we should trade players to get these stars because other clubs were doing it, then you listed player who were traded for picks in comparrisons.

You're saying we haven't chased players and that's complete BS.

Which 'star' should we have got? Where were these opportunities we continually pass up, where did we miss out because we were a bunch of puss cakes? Or should we employ the Voss trade for the **** of it format?

You have no idea how proactive we are in our oporations and you continue to give armchair criticism about how we lack this and that, but have NFI about the doings of our football operations team.

Well sor ****ing ree

We can't all have our finger on the pulse of the inner workings of the club as an enlightened few on here seem to. Well done on bailing up an AFC staffer once at the Shed which clearly places you right in the inner sanctum.

Do you want me to dig up Neil Craig's previous comments about being reluctant to trade? Or are they part of my delusion?

I've not only not challenged your line of thinking on his previous reluctance, I've agreed with it. He had made comments to the media that would make you question his desire to trade existing players. But he hasn't expressed a dersire to not trade. However, that 'reluctance' and comments to the media to reassure players aside, we haven't exactly been left out in the cold. There hasn't been a situation where we wouldn't trade Douglas and a first to obtain Ryan Griffen. All teams have difficulty trading established players, they usually don't want to go.

We DO persue opposition players heavily, we have gone after player with both success and failure and I believe we will continue to evolve in our trading along with the rest of the league.

I didn't say we should get stars. In fact you brought up Chris Judd. I said that we should be going after Kennedy and given that we weren't prepared to give up what it will cost, mused whether the current regime could get a McLeod/Jarman deal done.

I don't know how this qualifies as Ben Kennedy = Chris Judd.

I see. We tried to get Big Jim to put himself up for trade, it didn't work, so we've clearly turned over every leaf.

Jordie McKenzie who you're obviously keen to mention chose to stay on Melbourne's rookie list rather than take a spot on our main list. How on earth does that happen? How do they outbid us with a worse deal?

Which 'star' should we have got? Where were these opportunities we continually pass up, where did we miss out because we were a bunch of puss cakes? Or should we employ the Voss trade for the **** of it format?
How the hell should I know? We have a club supposedly full of high priced, qualified professionals to do this. All I see is what we did or didn't accomplish.

On 5aa just then, Phil Harper was asked what GWS wanted from clubs to get into the mini draft. He said they want players in the top 4 or 5 at there respective clubs. That is paying alot.

I would have liked it if they had asked who GWS think our top 4-5 players are.

I guess the negotiations will be ongoing, but it doesn't seem likely.
Surely we could give up Doughty.

Didn't we show them our B&F results?

I wish we would go after Lachie Neale this draft. So underrated but if there is one thing he can do, is win a clearance. We'll get him cheap to.

So can Brodie Smith. That was one of his strengths at the championships and Caigy wont give him a crack in the guts due to our dominate midfield keeping him out ;)

We should look at Jarred Allmond from WWT Eagles.

20 years old and 182 cm in height so he is not a bad size. We should be able to pick him up in the rookie draft as he would have gone through the draft before and after watching him today, he looks like a very good player.

Half forward who could turn into a midfielder with a few preseasons.

We should also look at Peter Rolfe from South Adelaide either with a late draft pick or as a rookie pick. Good size and good tight skills with his left foot. Knows where the goals are and runs all day.

Brady Dawe

Ive watched a few Norwood games this year and this man has always stood out to me. A big athletic looking ruckman/key position player. Looks to be the goods.
Would love to try and draft him, not sure what he'd be worth in the big scheme but maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick I'd be happy with. Guys like that dont come around too often. He looks like he could be a great wingman to Jacobs for many years as a big athletic mobile off sider.

Re: Brady Dawe

I rate Dawe, but not sure if he'd be much of an improvement on McKernan (the good version that we see glimpses of). Having said that, I'd like to see Smack tried at CHB if we lose Davis, and if we're not going to use Tippett as a second ruckman then Dawe is exactly the type we need.

He was awesome a couple of weeks ago.

Re: Cameron Shenton at Norwood

Only 21 this September, and for a while I've thought of him as the exact type of medium forward that we're lacking. Definitely worth rookie listing, in fact I'd be inclined to use a third or fourth round draft pick in such a shallow draft.

Weird looking unit though...

Re: Cameron Shenton at Norwood

How old is Mat Suckling? Ball magnet, hard and good disposal.

Fuller also has a great left foot and would be handy from defence.

**** it, lets swap half of the Crows with Norwood players.
