Opinion Looking towards 2018

Hey Soapy, I think your right and he’ll probably do tha, but IMO the fact that we don’t necessarily depend on this kid’s improvement in 2018 to make us better, is the biggest bonus. O’Brien as well.;)

That's a pertinent point.

We're in no rush to have to showcase the new draftees, although should the right opportunity present................you never know.
There's plenty of eye-candy in the squad already with the likes of CCurnow, Pickett, SPS and then add the new recruits in, Kennedy, Lang and Garlett.

There really should be little shortage of fans wanting to see the guys already in the system already along with the quality of new recruit we have brought in.
The JLS (what's it called?) series could be one we'll all be keeping an eye open for. Haven't looked forward to the next season as much as this one.....ever?

Totally disagree. Results in 2018 don't mean much and it's not showcasing. If the kids are ready (and most will be) they should play. As Bolton has made clear it's about development and the journey to make Carlton a powerhouse again. These kids not only need to play but they need to play together as a group. They will be so much better for it

He's a tastier prospect than the "Lamb" option you've been pushing for this position Soapy ...

Polson is a natural midfielder. Smart and a creator. Doesn't have the overhead strength or awareness to shut down a small forward. Lamb has done some great jobs as a defensive forward and is strong enough. I also struggle to see Lamb getting many games up forward with what we are developing and was looking at a left field option for him. Polson has been training with the mids and looks very good. JMO

Well we need one and Lamb isn't the answer for mine .
Yes Polson thus far has been mid and may well continue to be but I'd like to see his pace , disposal and smarts coming out of defense at least on trial in the pre season .
Who woulda thought Jones could do what he has once switched to the backline ...

Not sure we do need one when the backline gels. We have Byrne Simpson Mullett OShea Plowman Garlett even Weitering that can all play on a small if needed.

Plus Jones was 25. You don't change a kid around without seeing if they can play their natural position. Poor kids played ONE game

The backline is close to complete IMO .
Simpson more than likely in his final season , Lamb , Mullett and O'Shea not good enough .
Weitering , Marchbank , Jones and Macreadie as our talls , Plowman , Docherty and Byrne more medium types .
Perhaps Byrne could do the job at a pinch but i definitely see the need for a quality small defender so with our midfield growing in number and quality each year , grooming a Polson for the role wouldn't be the worst or most left field of ideas ...

Fair to say we disagree. :thumbsu:

Byrne Jones Plowman
Simpson Weitering Marchbank
Fisher Cripps Dow
SPS Mckay Silvagni
Wright C.Curnow Pickett
Kreuzer Murphy E.Curnow
Int: Kennedy Lang Williamson Garlett

Dow as a pick 3.. i expect him to play majority of the season, if fisher can play 1st season dow definitely can. Expect an SPS impact from him.

Like others have said..we need to move on from levi, enter beefcake harry.

Charlie and cripps to rotate mid/forward.

Garlett, pickett, wright, SPS/fisher to provide pressure up forward ..all are dangerous around goals too.

Kennedy and Lang have to step up and i think they will.

Would really like to see cunningham in that team, along with mcreadie. Can see form in the vfl being a big factor on who plays in the 1st team. Kerridge, lamb, polson, obrian , thomas, levi and graham will have to dominate vfl to get a go i feel.

Most will be ready? How are you so sure about this? How can anyone be, coaches included at this early point through the pre-season?

Who are these kids that have to be played?
Polson? Kerr? LeBois? JGM? Dow? Macreadie? Obrien? Schumacher?

Are we playing, I say tomato you say tomatoe ?
What would you like to see as a starting 22 next year? Will be good to see who misses out for whom?

HARKER top thread mate well done:thumbsu:

I know my limitations and wont comment on all points mainly because that's not me.

The main things I am looking at this year is Bolton to be voted the best coach and Mckay/Curnow to become the next Buddy/Rough.
Keeping things simple. I like it.

I think you’ve misinterpreted a little. If Dow is ready and earns his spot, he’ll play.
We aren’t depended on him to move us forward in 2018, like we have with others previously.
Forcing players such as Thomas, Kerridge, Lamb, Wright, etc. out of the team is the key to our long term success!

You'd think that would be somewhat obvious, wouldn't you? Forcing senior players out and not granting the new guys games, they may not have earned.

Bolton (and the CFC) would want to develop the youth via senior exposure, but need us to be competitive and win games of football also.
Sorry to have to remind people of how bad the Port Adelaide experience was for us last year. It didn't do Polson nor the club, any service at all.
Live and learn, hey?

Think that after all our exuberance about the stocks of your youth, it will still be the likes of Casboult & Wright who will kick most goals for us.
As long as the young guys are being trained up well and are competitive in whichever level they play at through the course of the year, it's all good.

Well all the drips consider our list bottom 4 we traded our best midfielder and lost our best defender the sky is falling.

We have the most rising star nominations this year and we will again next year.
Our list depth is greater than anytime since 95.
We need to focus on what has been traded / delisted and what has been recruited to replace them.
On that front we are a far stronger club than the one that won 7 times in '16 and 6 in '17.

When the drips realise that they will become squirts and will be gushing in their praise of our recruiting and development.

Personally I don't presume to know what bolts selections will be or where he will play people who are borderline going forward but I do expect by midyear those players will not be retaining their places unless they step up significantly.

I thinks it's the other way around.

If Dow is physically ready I reckon he will play. Much like SPS last season. If they can handle it get them in.

Apart from Wright I never saw them in the side anyway. It's not forcing them out. They were never in it. 2018 is about development. If it's a choice between Thomas & Dow for example I know who I would pick given an eye on the future even if Thomas may produce slightly more in earlier games

No. I read your post as saying we need to play senior players to be winning more. I believe we will pick kids over some senior players in order to develop and be ready quicker for the future.

The Port Adelaide game was ONE game. Apart from that I reckon the balance was good for most of the season.

Whoever said don't play Wright or some experience. Once again people are reading what they want. IMO Murphy Curnow Wright Simpson Jones Kruezer will be our core senior players, then there is Cripps Kennedy Weitering Marchbank Plowman as the next generation ready to step up and lead, but when it comes to the second tier senior players like a Thomas or Lamb as examples I would pick Dow or Polson any day as they are the future

That is the balance Bolton found so well in 2017 and I believe he will do again in 2018

Two key points to a successful 2018
1) Get games into a young forwardline
Pickett Curnow Wright
Silvagni/Kerr Mckay Garlett
(Casboult doesnt Cut it)

2) Kerridge is the seasons barometer player. If he steps up, relieves Cripps while taking pressure off the young mids)

Polson has been training with the mids and forwards, mentioned by Teague as in the mix for his forward set up.

The Port Adelaide game was a huge lesson and not to be simply dismissed as only one game. Can't imagine Bolton sighing an "oh well". Lessons learned.
I don't know who's saying what as there seems to be all sorts of notes being played out, but again, which 22 would you like being wheeled out come round 1?

Once players are in motion, it's their spots they stand to lose and I'm not sure how one can through imagination, play out the sequence of events from round 1 through to round 23. Can you do it?
