AFL Autopsy Loss to the Hawkes

I would’ve liked to have seen a bit of fight when Ridley got that hit too. I didn’t see any remonstration, nobody really flew the flag, so that little side note was a bit disappointing.
Merrett did from memory. But I doubt we will see much of it all year, stringer has been one of the main guys to fly the flag. Robert’s likes to as well

There’s some players I’m really loving watching. Marto, Caldwell, Roberts, Kako, Reid, Durham could name a few more. But can’t believe we are gonna run with Sheil and McGrath in the back line.. any chance we try McGrath as a pressure forward? Or even a wing? Can’t do another year of watching him down back lol

I still feel this team was picked over a week ago with the thought of 'testing' a few things out in the lead up to the Hawkes game, and giving the new look defence a chance to mesh a bit. When that went to crap we just kept the same plan/team without really thinking about it.
The back 6 had never played together and it really showed

Our backline looked slow, really slow. That’s a worry.

However, the biggest worry for me is the lack of good users back there.

Ridley & Reid are fine, although Reid needs time to adapt to the pace and pressure of AFL.

But Shiel, McKay & McGrath are all liabilities.

I’d be playing Redman & Roberts behind the ball - both take the game on, are creative, and good by foot.

Moving the ball by hand? I’d prefer if they didn’t. The Hawks pressure showed it up as a high risk strategy that mostly didn’t pan out.
Agree with this.
I don't mind Shiel back there still though, but we do need a run and carry player back there with some wheels, as we did last year. That's supposed be El Hawli, but he hasn't really pushed his case in the praccies or match sims.

Merrett went in and had words, other than that, yes. We should have remonstrated as a group. It was a pretty blatant clothesline.

Can we try McKay as a forward?

we are definitely going to miss stringer now that Langford is likely out for a month.

Caddy is too young and skinny to hold down the forward line. Draper will see significant ruck time. Don’t want caddy to burn out taking too much load too early. Edward’s is also probably in line for a call up but is also on the skinny side.

The Shiel experiment will last all year because our coaches are stubborn and hes old, I'd can it already, cannot play this position.
Yep, one game is a sufficient sample size.

I also wondered this last night. I think it invites Hayes or Lav in, and we risk not having that big body down back.

Lots of positives across the board. Effort was there, we just lacked polish at crucial moments.

Same old guys with the same problems.

Like the Kako kid, surely we have a player on our hands here.

Need to see something from Tsatas shortly or I'm filing into the McGrath portfolio.

Season and career defining games over the next 3 weeks.
Is that really you, Kelvin??

+20 clearance
+24 CPs
+10 i50s
-1 scoring shot

Didnt defend closer to goal well enough, kick ins either poorly coached or players just dumb, ill go later as cosch aeemed aware of set plays.

Prior and Shiel cant defend and the foot race it turned into didnt help with their small fwds who drummed Shiel, Prior and Roberts

Tough without Parish, Wright, Langford and Ridley next week

The Shiel experiment should be cloae to over. Get El Hawli bouncing off half back and start his development in 1v1 and defending, wont be any worse to start with

Hobbs - Not upto it, was his chance albeit fwd alot again (Gresham was roo good)
Tsatas - Easy to look good at training when your the only one trying, kicking terrible

Out: Ridley
In: El Hawli

Out: Hobbs
In: Gresham

Out: Langford
In: Tom Edwards i suppose (not much else)

We just aren’t clinical enough. Merrett is probably our only elite kick. It feels like we work twice as hard for our goals compared to our opposition
And he was a bit off last night as well despite how well he played. 9 turnovers.

Also that hawks set play was very very impressive and shows where they are.
Not really the play itself but how it's designed to work tied in with how they recruit (back our runner in open space against you) and when it's called. You don't run that in the first quarter, you run that in the 3rd or 4th quarter when you break a team with your run.
That type of preparation shows why they have made the leap they have.
They recruit with purpose and they play to a system and style, and they coach to their players strengths.
They accentuate a strength in how they do things.

We still run the McGrath run to the right pocket and kick it long.
This is where the coaching just has to be better and more modern, though I do understand why would you bother working on that aspect of the game when you have so many other issues with your list and play. I get it's not high up priority wise.

Funny thing is Jones and Martin caught the hawks Runner.

They got that goal because Sheil didn’t trust his teammates and got caught in no man’s land rather then stick with his player

Hawthorn find so many ways over the years to be hateable

Stupid effing celebrations

Umpires sucked. Commentators sucked.

Durham, Duursma, Kako, Caddy, all had moments

Jones is going to be a serious player

Caldwell is a stud.

I logically know we are a mid table team but I don’t love seeing us play like one

I always remember in making their mark on Amazon , dimma drilling into their players, what do we do when we kick a goal? We celebrate together, not to the crowd, that's what humble teams do.

Ergo hawks are the opposite of a humble team
