LOTE Tuqiri is staying in rugby union, having snubbed a chance to return to league.

The decision came this afternoon after Tuqiri had a final meeting with NRL club South Sydney, who were hoping a million-dollar salary package would lure the Waratahs flyer back to league.

"He is staying in rugby," Souths CEO Shane Richardson said.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

Personally, i think he would have been a good signing for the Rabbitohs. It would have made them even stronger in the future, and he is by-far still good enough.

I'm a firm believer that if you leave to the darkside RL shouldn't even try to get you back! Lote made a fool out of South's! He was never leaving, he just used them:thumbsdown: ... Well Done Rabbitohs:thumbsdown:. Piss Off Loti

Well thinking about it some more... South's used Loti as well. They gained so much publicity out of this...

Would really have made Union look bad if the last of their big name League recruits ended up coming back to the NRL.

I think it will be better this way for the NRL in the long run tho, because Lote (a winger) would have chewed up so much of the Souths salary cap for years that they would stay crap.
I think now Souths are on their way up and they will bring -a lot- of fans back to RL.

Agreed, to a point. Souths have a great pack but they need some quality backs like Tuqiri. Hopefully some of their youngsters come good.

Souths win because now other elite players know they have the funds and are serious players in the market. Getting Lote would have been an added bonus but the next time a gun player comes onto the market, watch the agent stampede towards Redfern to get an offer.

but it's not for the money. pfft!

Souths used Lote more then vice versa. I don't even know if they had any real hope of getting him.

Either way, union is paying some massive money for a winger and he can now join the million dollar club with 'son of Ron Giteau'. They can't keep spending like they are. The game is going down massively lately.

I'm off the opinion that Lote is a "money whore" with his shopping around of clubs AND codes, but given the same opportunity to build a nest egg, would we all do the same??

Money is factor, but i dont think its the be-all and end-all of the decision.

And its fair to say not all switch to the Gaylord code just for money. Apperently Tahu is going to be on similar to what he would be a parra.

The figures bandied about are $500k a season, don't know how accurate they are but that is a ****load more than any NRL Winger/Centre has ever been paid, except of course during the SL war.

If the reports are right for a $2M, 4 year deal for Tahu, then he is getting substantially more than he would get in League. No problems with that - it would be hard to knock back sort of extra money.

It is also why Union is unlikely to lure across halfbacks and five-eighths from League. The elite players in those positions attract the big money in League as they are generally the "franchise" players. The gap between what a good half back can get in League as opposed to Union is not significant. So the financial lure is not as strong.
