There are some shocking official websites run by AFL clubs and this Telstra mob. I've had a good look at most of them lately and some of them are pathetic. They have lack of updates, wrong links, pictures of players who are incorrectly identified, the list goes on.

Are you happy with your clubs official website? Which club has the worst official website?

don't know

Don't know I never go there, I only visit unofficial sites like FTO, which I guess says it all!

Essendons is the BEST official site as they run it independant from that crap AFL/Telstra poo pile, from the outa and Bomberblitz are pretty good unofficial sites.

Are you sure? I just looked at the Bombers website (http://bombersfc.com.au/) and they have the same layout as all the other official club pages. It also displays the Telstra and AFL logos.

www.essendonfc.com.au is the bombers official page.

Oh Ok. AFL.COM should link it to that site then, instead of the crummy one they have at the moment. More clubs should take Essendons approach. I know 99% of the saints fans I talk to HATE the saints.com.au site. They removed the very popular fan forum and replaced it with a crappy java chat run by tel$tra. Everybody uses the saintsational.com forum now.

I thought I read somewhere though that Essendon lose alot of money hosting the webpage them self. Where as, other clubs get $400K to have Telstra host them.

The Tesltra sites are run and paid for by Telstra. Telstra also have a pool of money that is didvided up between all the clubs, that are contracted to Telstra, based on the number of hits/page reads/requests etc that each site gets. The more you visit your clubs site, the more money they make. All stories that appear on AFL.com.au SHOULD also appear on your clubs site. So take the time to read them through your clubs site and earn the club some dollars. When Telstra were promoting this to the clubs they said that most clubs would earn about $250k per year with no outlay.

cheers

I read they were making money on it but obviously not as much as the Telstra website but those clubs have sacrificed hits for money.
Thats why the Essendon run website is getting more hits than the Telstra run sites because of the lack of features on those sites.

The thing I can't stand about all the official sites now is that they take too long to load and are covered with crappy Tel$tra ads...
the java chat thing is also rubbish.

Especially when said ****smoker works for the ummm "A F L Telstra Network".

Go on, deny it again, I need a good laugh.

None of us know what we are talking about but you sure do hey? The people have spoken (you know, the ones that actually have to use those sites)

The AFL sites are a joke.

The AFL site existed last year and each club had it's own team page on them. The Clubs also had their own sites as well. (Much like the Bombers do now).

So what do the AFLTN do? One template for ALL the clubs. All sites are the same. Function the same. Same archaic template system. The site producer's in many cases don't even barrack for the site they are assigned to look after(!!!!!!) Hello?

You ****ed it up Telstra. Bribe the clubs all you want with 'hit incentives' et al. But the site's... as the original poster put it... are LOUSY!

What, so the designs aren't poor, the pages are always up-to-date, and the pages aren't dominated by Telstra ads and/or subscriber-only links? Gee I'd like to see the pages you've been looking at...

Please share.

AFL & 15 Clubs sold their internet rights for 5 years.
Telstra are investing over $20 millon over the next 5 years
The 15 participating Clubs receive $200k each year (for doing nothing)
Bonus pool each year also nets each club around $100K
Telstra invest a further $10 million per year in direct and indirect costs in running the Network.
The content on the site is provided by Sportal.
The multimedia on the site is provided by Silverspoon Productions (Harvey Silver used to produce the Footy Show)

If you do the math, Telstra invest close to $1 million per club per year!
So, instaed of bagging them, maybe you so called football fans should be suppoting them.
Where would some of your clubs be without this investment?
How much bigger would some of the Clubs debts be without this commitment?
Who else could commit to that much money each year for every club to run their website?
Can your club afford to run its own site?

At least this is what I have been told.

So let me see, we're going to judge the sites by figures behind a dollar sign given to us by an AFLTN employee? We must be wrong, because we aren't going by a figure. Too bad the service isn't as good as it was last year. The Hawthorn site has improved during the year, but I still liked last years set-up better. At least they could afford to archive all the stories last year.

Funny, wasn't Hawthorn's site also a template version like 4 other club sites?
And what did happen to Sportsview?
And where would Hawthorns site be right now if not for Telstra's money?
Always the negative, never the positive

What do I care? The service was better for me. Sites aren't meant to be money making machines. They are meant to provide service for the fans. The old site provided me with better services, and the club had more creative control.

Does Sportsview ring any bells?

. The site producer's in many cases don't even barrack for the site they are assigned to look after(!!!!!!) Hello?

You are wrong on this one.

Sportsview looked after 4 sites. Again, the template wasn't the best, but it was a HELLUVA lot better than the current fiasco.

Yeah Kevin Diggerson is a real die in the wool Collingwood man is he?

go to www.saints.com.au and report back on how outdated all the info is. i get better info. on st.kilda by watching re-runs of john edwards program the other side.

cmon, i dont begrudge Telstra trying to recoup their investment but if you are going to spend that much money on a product make sure people want it. right now the websites are sh!ite and quite frankly, if I was Telstra I would be embarrassed to be associated with them.

I have always been tought that if you are going to do something, then do it properly...obviously the people at Telstra never learnt that adage.

As much as I bemoan the current website set ups, the Clubs do also wear responsibility on the content.

As far as I know - the clubs put the articles together, then send it off to be put up on the sites.

If a club doesn't send anything, then a site won't be updated.

If however St Kilda for example are sending info in, and it isn't being put up, compared to say the Lions who are sending info in and it is getting put up, then yes there is an even bigger problem than the crappy set up/visual aesthetics/blatent same look only different colours style problems we currently have.

AFLTN are meant to send reporters to Hawthorn training but don't. Yes, the clubs do have some responsibility, but AFLTN run it and have some reporting and production responsibility too.

I compare what AFLTN is saying to McDonalds saying they're better than KFC, even though the consumer like KFC.

It's an attitude like this that makes Telstra a second rate web runner.
