Australian Test cricket captain Steve Smith has a current batting average of 60.63 (the highest ever by anyone after exactly 90 innings). Ricky Ponting holds the record for having a 60 average after the most innings played (178 innings).

Steve's average is the 6th highest all-time for batsmen that have played at least 20 innings. But what I found interesting is how poor the final Test was for those batsmen on the list. Those below all averaged >59 over their entire careers:

1. Don Bradman, 0 and DNB in his last Test
2. Adam Voges, 0 and 2
3. Graeme Pollock, 1 and 4
4. George Headley, 16 and 1
5. Herbert Sutcliffe, 3 and 38
7. Eddie Paynter, 9 and 0

Cheteshwar Pujara has finished the 2016-17 first class season with more than 2000 runs, only the sixth time somebody has scored over 2000 runs outside an English season. Unlike the previous five batsmen, Pujara scored all his runs in the one country. These are all six players in chronological order:

Some facts and numbers about the 2015 Irish constitutional referendum on marriage equality. Voters were asked whether to add to the Constitution that "marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex". The proposal was supported by the Government as well as all major political parties.

Since returning to the tennis circuit as a 34yo, in the last 3 years Martina Hingis has won 10 grand slam titles including the US Women's and Mixed Doubles over the weekend.

Is it much of a hassle to add career span and the year of highest average to that?

Had never heard of Vijay Merchant before. Good trivia question that!

Yes, I will work on that and post it later today. How would you like the career spans to read? For example, Bradman's career span could read 1927 to 1949 or 1927-28 to 1948-49.

Thanks very much. I was just curious to see at what point these players reached their (statistical) peak. About two-thirds of the way through a career seems to be a rough rule of thumb. Graeme Hick much earlier, but he hadn't yet played a Test by 1990. Grace, Compton & Hanif Mohammad too, with their abnormally long careers.

Former Pakistani Test wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal is still playing domestic first class cricket in his home country. In a game which finished recently, on December 25, Akmal gave himself a Christmas present of sorts when he overtook Rod Marsh's total of 869 dismissals, now the most ever by a non English wicket-keeper. These players have made more than 700 dismissals.
