Hey Fred no worries that you are happy and I am not, I'm a glass half empty girl
Don't want to be a smart alec but Eagles got a pick in the 40's for Stevens. And Broughts played 15 games this year

Stevens is 21 and Broughts is 26 - hardly straight up comparrisons ...though I think we got unders

The unders you say, is put more into perspective when considered with the high pay packet we now don't have for a player who wasn't part of the coach's future plans.

I don't disagree, and these are the things we don't have oversight off - cap issues, attitude and who the coach has flagged for which roles.

If trading Broughton for Duffy, means we have he cap space to push our list one step further next year - so be it.

Not to mention Stevens was pick 23 just 3 yrs ago so in effect the Eagles went back in a big way while we turned an older rookie into pick 36.

Thanks for the replies guys. If he take him (hope we do) I think he'd play off a back flank, so hopefully his skills are up to par there.

Just to add weight to why that's a bad idea, the reason we ended up with Lower in the first places is because he ended up languishing in the SANFL after Port insisted he was a HB Flanker. He doesn't play that role well. He's too slow relative to his hight, and he's too 'average' with disposal to be an AFL attacking HBF option. Inside mid or nada.

Maybe the reason we get under value is because we've played hardball at the trade table in previous years regarding Bradley, McPhee and Dawson?
I thought clubs were quite dispassionate these days about what had transpired in the past and were focused solely on the future - in short, "it's not personal, it's business".

As I understand it, the only rule is not to trade out a player to a club that is also in a premiership window, and even that's not cast in stone.

Also, Essendon hardly have a history of being fair and reasonable - e.g., they insisted on a second round pick for Bradley and a week later delisted him. And as for St Kilda - surely you don't have great expectations what with the Pelican being at the helm?

I do think we should have picked up some of Broughton's salary if that meant getting a trade done with Port.

Nope, and when he is playing well for the dogs you will come over to my view, Im sure.

He could win back-to-back Brownlow medals for the Dogs and that would mean nothing in terms of your idea of his trade value. If we went to the trade table with him (who's to say we didn't BTW), we would have ended up with a pick we wouldn't use at best. His trade value RIGHT NOW would be minimal to none.

Rubbish, he had an interrupted year last year, if not he would of played more games. He will be best 18 at the dogs. Probably best 18 at half the clubs in the competition. A pick in the 30s is not a high draft pick by any stretch, and he is a solid AFL level midfielder at worst. I don't believe he was offered for trade because the club wanted to keep him, and unless someone has heard something you cant assert he was offered for trade. The only reason he was delisted was because Freo literally had to delist anybody to meet some stupid technical rules.

Well we'll never know of course, but you're seriously overestimating what Lower would be worth to most clubs IMHO. Putting aside whether we should have de-listed him (I think we shouldn't have), there's no way we would have got anything like a 2nd round pick for him. I can't think of many teams in the league that would take him with a view to having him as best 18, if so it would be a temporary arrangement like he's been for us - he's just not top shelf midfield material, simple as that. He's a good honest depth player.

so many on here insist it's a great idea to delist Lower and play / develop the kids. Our window is/was now, with pav, Elvis and 211. If we end up with a soft midfield, through injuries or players not coming on, we are back to square one, only with no window. Time is now, depth and consistancy are vital. There must have been other players that would be too overpriced to consider as delist material. Anthony's name could have been called out first if there were posturing for the rule.

Boyd and Griffen will be more than happy to have Lower at the Dogs. Lower's clearance rate at stoppages will take some of the load off those two who were carrying the Bullies midfield alone last season. With the addition of Dan Cross back in there too, they will be a much tougher outfit. Don't like to lose Lower, but for the sake of his career, the Dogs are a perfect fit for him.
If there is a bonus out of this now - at least we will have two picks in the PSD to PICK UP TALLS.....FFS!!

A guy like Rowan jones, who was a rubbish footballer, ended up a premiership player and much loved amongst the eagles inner sanctum. Lower is jones with 30% more ability. I'm shattered at the moment

Cross won't get a game with lower playing his role

Unless we re-draft Crichton to the main list which I'm dead against. Rookie or nothing.

Pick 60 would've been handy.

Rowan Jones.. I always loved when the Eagles had an inside 50 mark during a derby, and there was that half second of oh no here's a goal, and then you saw it was Rowan Jones lining up from 30 out directly in front. And you could just relax.

Can assure you KPR, the only reason Cross doesn't play is if he retires. Heart as big as Phar Lap and revered more than nearly any other player at the Western Oval since Chris Grant. There is no reason why he and Lower won't fit into the same side.
