Fremantle Football Club is without a doubt the luckiest football club in the league.
Their performance today was insipid, uninspired, inept, etc, etc...we've all heard it all before when it comes to the dockers. They have NO RESPECT in Melbourne, where they are considered by many the softest team in the league. In ten years the best they could do is spend 15 mins in a finals series. They took 9 goes at beating the mob from down the road before they eventually did. They have underperformed with monotenous regularity. They make excuses. They make bad decisions, such as extending the underperforming coaches contract (and giving him a substantial pay rise!) They have a badly designed jumper and an even worse club song, and have the nickname of a wharf worker, hardly inspiring.
So why are they lucky?
They are lucky they dont live in Melbourne. Do you think a club like this would survive anywhere outside of the plastic bubble that is Perth? Do you think they could attract 33,000 members outside of WA's football duopoly? Do they perform with such courage/heart/skill that they could attract new supporters or members away from other clubs such as Essendon, Carlton or Collingwood?
Unfortunately the answer for all of these questions is a resounding NO.
Yes, they are very lucky...if they were a Melbourne based team they might go they way of Fitzroy and be merged out of the competition.
