St Kilda Football Club wishes to advise that Luke Ball informed Saints Senior Coach Ross Lyon late this afternoon that he would like to be traded and that Collingwood is his Club of choice.
Despite having a three year contract offer from the St Kilda Football Club since June, Luke has decided to pursue his career elsewhere.
St Kilda Senior Coach Ross Lyon said, “We are extremely disappointed that Luke has come to this decision. We were confident Luke would stay with the Club, as he has always been a required player. However we will now do what is best for the St Kilda Football Club's interests and those of its members and supporters with the aim of completing an equitable trade for a person of Luke's calibre, leadership, playing honours and experience.”
Recruited from Xavier College/Sandringham U18, Luke Ball was drafted in the 2001 National AFL Draft priority selection (St Kilda) at No. 2 overall. He made his debut for the Club in 2003 and the 25 year old midfielder has since played 142 career games with the Saints. In 2005 Ball took his game to another level and was rewarded for his efforts, earning himself All-Australian honours and sharing the Club Best and Fairest award.
A courageous player and natural leader, Ball captained the side in 2006 and 2007 (co-captain) and was regarded by many as one of the Saints most fierce competitors. In 2009 Ball was ranked 14th in the AFL for total tackles and ranked 10th in the AFL for tackles per game.
The Club will make no further comment on this matter until a final decision is made on Luke’s future.
