The Dogs have received the 6th most frees on average, even less than the Swans and Brisbane.

The Dogs free kick differential is so high because we don’t give many free kicks away. Going by your theory that it is down to training / coaching, I guess the Dogs are coached / trained to not give free kicks away? Maybe others should try it 🤷‍♂️

A lot of Dogs and opposition fans alike are saying how surprised that we're not a bottom 4 club this season - but I'm one of the few that isn't. I said for the entirety of the 3 years as coach how poor McCartney was tactically, how stupid his "contested ball" mantra was, and when we were winning what few games we did it was because of the natural brilliance of Griffen, Stringer, Bontempelli etc and inspite of the coaching, and not because of it, and it's proven true when with just one pre-season and a new coach (one in Bev who is a masterstroke), that isn't McCartney.

We can be glad the only player who was better than Tutt and Jones that walked out on the club under McCartney helped us get Tom Boyd. It could have been worse.

It's often talked about.
It's also talked about they always lose the clearances.
It's the way they play.
It's deliberate.
They would rather give away a free and stop the play than allow a team to get on the move.
They train for it .

I think you're right actually, and your table supports it too. Not coaching/training to get frees, but coaching/training to not concede frees.

We give away less frees than any other club, that's the notable stat. And I'm sure they have been trained to tackle properly and not give away stupid frees. What I don't understand is why everyone else whinges about that. Surely every team should try to reduce the number of frees they give away?

To be honest the credit for that may go to Brendan McCartney as much as Luke Beveridge. McCartney made a point of drilling proper technique and discipline into the kids way back when - at least for half our team.

So Richmond are trained to give away free kicks, but there's simply no way that the Bulldogs are trained to not give away frees. Got it.

agreed, if you are the 3rd, 4th best side, you are likely to lose 2 finals and win one. if you you are 5th, 6th then its one all.
The BigFooty nuffs will see GWS as having a better finals series than Geelong and Brisbane worse than Essendon.

Good point. If you finish 5-8 you can only ever lose one final a year, but I suppose the counter to that is that you have a lesser opportunity to win multiple because you're probably a worse team and playing all but the first one (if you're 5th/6th) away from home.

I think if you make a PF that's still considered better than a 5-8 team winning their EF - yes, 1-2 vs 1-1 but being in the last four teams standing means more I think. I personally wouldn't think Geelong had a worse finals than GWS, they'd have been beaten by the likely two GF teams and no real shame in that in isolation. I get that the narrative would be different because of the finals losses in recent seasons though, which would be frustrating.

Anyway, on Bevo - he's obviously a good coach and one of the leading coaches in the comp. A lot of frustrations on our board stems from a lengthy disregard for the ruck position putting us behind the 8-ball in some big games, and some questionable selection decisions from him or the MC more generally. But as a pure coach in getting the players to gel and play for each other he's evidently one of the best.

I can understand now why the Dogs give away the least amount of free kicks after watching them on the weekend. It became quite obvious.

Bevo has dropped players before for a lack of discipline e.g. Cloke gave a silly 50m penality away at GMHBA Stadium that killed any chance we had of victory on game, and was in the VFL a week later.
He dropped Macrae in 2015 for 1-2 weeks too (Macrae then came back with a 43 disposal, 2 goal performance so it worked).
