Someone Like a Rob Harding Sandringham Dragons who has coached his own teams, developed and recruited young talent. There’s so many good coaches who have actually coached before. This is bloody strange.
Depends who applied for the job as well I guess

Definitely a strange appointment on the surface but it’s done now
Just need to wait and see how it pans out

How many teams of his own had Steve Morris coached before doing an excellent job with our VFL team?

Let's get behind Jack Mad and see what he can do.

Yes lets not get coaches who are 'too good'.
Not agreeing with the post but have to ask the question at large, when was the last successful coach who was also a star player?
Voss - maybe 1 or 2 good seasons but still a fail
Hird - only the most one eyed supporter could say he didnt fail spectacularly
Buckley - Maybe? Made a Granny but that was basically gifted to him through us having Gastro go through the club during prelim week

So who else would be considered a 'star' as a player and then go and be successful as a coach?

Sam Mitchell has potential to achieve real success. If he doesn’t count cos no gf’s/flags as a coach I guess it’d be dimma.

He's just a forward coach fresh out of playing, I'm not sure why you wouldn't take him.

I'm going back a fair way but was Sheedy a good player who went on to be a great coach?
But an exception doesn't make a rule & I'd have to agree based on my understanding that overall average or players who have fought hard to make it have been possibly better served by those experiences?

Happy to support the clubs appointments though as they are better placed to make those calls....

Don't forget to add:

Was he a star or a good average player?

Morris was at least an assistant coach already.

I hate the Madgen appointment.

I wouldn't have thought we were in any great position to judge the merits of the appointment. There must be some reason for it. Perhaps it is simply to get the cheapest possible VFL coach to leave more room in the soft cap for development coaches, as was suggested in one previous post. Perhaps Jacky Mad interviewed his socks off. Perhaps he has a strong vision for development over performance with the VFL team. Perhaps he is seen as brining the struggling footballer with eclectic sports background slant to the position.

The club will have a load of young high end and speculative talent on its list. Developing that talent will be a huge priority. My guess is that would have a fair bit to do with this appointment.

I think it's fairly safe to say that a strong senior team comes at least in part, supported by a strong VFL team? I'm open to being corrected. So I wouldn't have thought the club would put this at risk ? Once again open to being corrected...

Also things are often not as they may appear at first viewing....

So you are judging Madgen before he has started coaching 🤔.

You must be fun at Christmas and Birthdays critiquing the presents before opening any.

We're not really 'in any great position' to properly judge most things the club does, yet here we are.

Bring him in as a development coach first if that is his strength, not as a team coach that has never actually coached a team before.

I'm not judging him, I'm judging the decision by the club to have him coach our VFL side with bugger all coaching experience. It's a far cry from when we had Craig McRae coach the VFL team with 10 years of assistant coaching under his belt, across 3 different clubs.

And yeah, I'm fun as **** at Christmas.

On the surface of it I'd agree with you in relation to the Craig McRae situation & it seems that's the way things go traditionally.

I don't know for sure (seems no one here does?). Possibly the RFC selection panel knew more about him as a candidate than we here do? But it's a done deal and we wait to see how he goes. The club can change things if it goes south? (Hopefully it doesn't though)....

Of course they do, but if they got everything right we wouldn't be where we are right now, would we? They have made some pretty poor/weak decisions over the past few years since the glory days....

Agree, beyond our last head of Fitness. I can't think of anything else the club hasn't gotten pretty close to the mark?

Steve Morris was perfect....son of a very gun Kevin. Steve ~ Not that good on field and stepped straight into the VFL ended up being a very good VFL coach.
that was a dream set up.

Batchelor was good enough at the helm of the VFL team. Had a lot of the 2024 draft kids through his team....and good VFL players we find.
AFL, VFL level been a fair bit of injury last 3 years.

The club has had Morris leaving~ a shame; promoting Batch makes sense. if he has coaching ambitions.

The new VFL coach~ bit left field. Does Magden bring his own assistants? often saw Rance, Lynch Prestia helping on the bench. You'd expect Bruest and Dureya both development coaches to help with VFL coaching.

Should at least give him an opportunity before making negative comments. It’s not like, he wouldn’t have, the support around him.

Women’s program is a mess
In terms of overall results? Difficult to disagree. It does appear we have been left behind... I was thinking more in terms of the senior men though?

I still can’t get over it and can’t believe some just blindly back the club and don’t even question process for decisions.

I can tell you there is people employed in senior roles at other clubs scratching their head when it was announced.

Came from nowhere.
