Midfielder Luke Dunstan is set for an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in Saturday’s practice match at Punt Road.

Dunstan left the ground late in the second term with scans on Sunday confirming the extent of the injury.

Head of Football David Rath said early indications suggested the 25-year-old would miss a significant part of the season.

“Unfortunately Luke will require surgery to repair the tear and will likely miss a large proportion of the season,” Rath said.

“Despite not being part of the AFL side on Saturday, Luke is an important part of our midfield group and it’s a blow to lose him for an extended period.”

Luke Dunstan has also progressed well after suffering a torn pectoral muscle last month in the Saints’ practice match with Richmond.

The No. 7 has commenced his running program and is slated to reach full fitness in six to eight weeks.

Peta Searle mentioned on the Unpluggered podcast that Luke has joined the coaching team for the AFLW team.

"Luke played a half, he was our travelling emergency. Same as Kenty, he’s going to play deep forward and inside mid for us and his power was just through the roof.

"You could almost sense that he knew he had a half, so he went out saying ‘I’m going to go out real hard and smash anyone that gets in my way’.

"He’s got a great balance between knowing when to go hard but can also control the outside of a contest if we need that.

"He wants to continue to improve his leadership, and he’s doing some coaching with our AFLW side at the moment which transferring over to us a little bit. That’s starting to come out in matches, you see him instructing and he almost wants to take control of whatever team he’s playing in and that’s really good to watch.

An influential and hard-hitting half in the VFL has Luke Dunstan in the frame for a potential recall for Spud’s Game.

Despite his limited game-time rotating between the midfield and forward line, the 26-year-old was one of the most prominent figures on the ground, with Zebras coach Jake Batchelor praising his growing leadership.

Dunstan – who played just one senior game last season before being benched with a pectoral injury – was picked as a travelling emergency for the Saints’ trek up to a sodden Sydney last weekend.

"Spook got tagged from the first bounce. Spook being Spook didn’t say anything, he just wanted to work harder and help the team out by working through it.

"We brought it up at half-time and basically said to his teammates to help him out. I challenged Luke to try something different and go to an opposition mid just to free up someone else, and he did that as well.

"There were a few bumps and bruises on him and he knew he’d played a game of football the next day.

"He didn’t stop all afternoon and won some good clearances for us and impacted when he needed to."

Midfielder Luke Dunstan collected a monster 46-disposal haul on Saturday, responding well to his omission from the senior side.

The 26-year-old worked well with Paddy Ryder, with Brett Ratten mentioning Dunstan’s name would be talked about at the selection table.

Following consecutive standout performances at VFL level, Luke Dunstan’s name is bound to be brought up in selection discussions.

The No.7 has had the ball on a string this past fortnight, collecting over 80 disposals (46 v Port Melbourne, 35 v Box Hill) to spearhead the Zebras’ midfield charge.

Dunstan has been damaging up forward, bagging three goals in the opening half against Box Hill, but has also floated through the defensive end, as he looks to lock down a place in St Kilda’s starting line-up.

“Luke had another awesome game, he had a few more uncontested possessions this time.

“His running was really good, and he was again important for us in the middle of the ground.

“A couple of goals as well rounded out a pretty strong day for him.”
