Luke Edwards Father/Son Discussion

“While Cousins was still at school, three AFL teams competed to draft him under the father–son rule; the Geelong Football Club, the West Coast Eaglesand the newly formed Fremantle Football Club. Cousins' father Bryan played 238 games for Perth in the WAFL and 67 games for Geelong in the VFL during the 1970s and 1980s. Geelong's recruiting manager, Stephen Wells, said, "Ben barracked for Geelong and we tried everything to get him here."[7]However, Cousins preferred to remain based in Western Australia and chose West Coast in October 1995.”
Turns out this was a really bad decision.
While we can't be sure how his life would have developed at Geelong, it couldn't have got much worse for him than it did at West Coast.

Geelong were doing a lot of drugs too, just look at what happened to Mathew Stokes and Bomber Thompson. If you take cousins out of west coast their issue doesn't look as bad.

West Coast still looks pretty bad.

Didn't they have a player who had cardiac arrest in Las Vegas? Plus a premiership wingman who OD'd?

Yep. Kerr in and out of jail. Similar drug dependence issues as Cousin's. Tried to burn his ex's house down 1 time.

Yep. Chad Fletcher & Chris Mainwaring.

One SA draftee lasted a few years over there but had to seek a trade for his own personal health and well-being. Got sucked into the culture and needed to get out.

Thanks for confirming my point.

My bad I was sure he was on the original list.

He definitely played in the 1st Young Guns game of the season a fortnight ago which is usually the pathway for TAC lads that missed out on the draft the last 2 years and VFL players under 22 years of which Jackson is one being on the Werribee list. Generally these games are for players that club recruiters are tracking and want another look at.

But, but, Crows didn’t give him a genuine opportunity.

Maybe the Edwards family were a little confused and thought he was participating in the old Foxtel Search for an AFL Superstar show?

Not sure if it was mentioned anywhere but in Ogilves road to the draft podcast interview he pretty much straight out said we only listed Edwards and jarman because they were FS and they felt some kind of need to either to give them a chance and/or because of public expectations.
