Luke Jericho Recalled- Why?!!!

But isn't that the whole point. He's played poorly in so many games why does he keep getting considered. Its not its though we are talking about a great or even good player whose form has wavered. He has shown little from day one and shows the same pretty much in every game he plays.

Look, if you believe that every game the guys ever played has been at the absolute worst standard possible, then theres really little point discussing it with you. You arent willing to be objective.

I saw all of Norwood's trial games, excluding their last one, and his pre-season wasn't that bad. One game he was off, another serviceable but the last game I saw he was pretty good (kicked three goals, went hard at the ball).

So I think its a bit unfair to say he's constantly showing little.

I was talking about showing little at AFL level.

He's had a few good games. Played pretty well against Carlton last year at the Dome.

Kicked four against Essendon once too i believe?

Everyone speaks as if the guys played a multitude of games and continually failed... hes only played 26.

It not unfair, not at all. Of course he's shown something, he wouldn't be on the list if he hadn't shown anything. I was there when as a 19 year-old he kicked 6 against Norwood and at the time I was thinking he was a great prospect. However over the years his stock has continued to decline. For as much as he gets talked up, and as much as we hear he's got talent to burn, he has shown very little for quite a few years. Not even his biggest fans can dispute that.

26 AFL games, a few pre-season games, a few AFL practise matches, and many SANFL games. All up he's continually failed to deliver on his "potential".

Yeah, but constantly showing little. He's not bad all the time.

No, he certainly hasnt reached the heights he could. That in itself is not proof that he will not.

Heres the thing... who's the great determiner of how well hes played, and how much hes putting in?

Jericho has become an obsession for this board, to the point that no matter how he plays there will be the same hysterical wank fest about how 'soft' he is... delievered through keyboard of course. Id love for you to tell me how i can determine if a guy gives 100% or not, as opposed to someone giving 90%

I hate this call, and it gets made far too often when we're discussing Jericho.
Yes, some people go over the top with the way they talk about him. He's not van Berlo, but he hasn't abandonned his child in a burning house just because he was afraid of the flames or anything either.
HOWEVER
In Aussie Rules, criticising a player for being soft, or not working hard enough, is just as legitimate as suggesting someone doesn't have the legspeed or the footskills to play AFL. Putting your body on the line and busting your gut are required and important skills and players who don't do these two things stick out like sore thumbs to me.
Just because I'm suggesting Luke lacks the required courage and workrate to play at the highest level doesn't mean I'm challenging him to a fist fight.
Maybe I wouldn't call him soft to his face, but would you tell Nick Gill he's a shithouse kick for goals to his face?

Yeah, but constantly showing little. He's not bad all the time.
A fair assessment IMO. ;)

Maybe because the heights people feel he can reach aren’t actually reachable? We all hear about his sublime skills, great pace, versatility, if he had all these assets being soft wouldn’t even matter. Fact is he’s an average player and on top of that he’s soft, not a great package if you ask me. Surely being as good a player as people claim, he would be dominating in the SANFL. He doesn't.

The irony is stinging.
Swell.

I would like nothing better for a player ( any player ) who I don't think will make it to throw egg in my face. I was absolutely stoked when Scotty Stevens proved many of us wrong. I would love to see Luke Jericho make it. I wish I could see something in his game which would make me confident that he will be a player we can pencil in in our next premiership 22.

Unfortunately, I don't can't anything in his game and am amazed we keep pesisting with him - at least matt smith was tall. This type of selection actually concerns me about where we are heading - do the current AFC powers that be truly know what it takes to win a premiership.

So what is it you ( and others )see that I'm missing?

Didn’t you hear mate, his sublime skills, pace, versatility, and height, all up one tantalizing prospect! In all honesty, he's an average prospect who has played 26 games in 6 years on the list.

I've stood up for him in this thread mainly because I think some of the comments directed towards him are a little harsh.

From what I've seen of him, I don't think he should be on our list, but some people seem to think that he's really bad and as soft as butter.

IMO, he's not that bad or that soft. Sure he has his off moments, but he knows how to play footy.

Funny, i tend to agree with you in atleast partially.

His being an outside player doesnt matter, atleast in terms of his ability to be a useful AFL contributer. The difference being, you clearly dont feel he has good skills, pace or versatility, I do, and it appears the Crows recruitment team, and selection panel agree with me. Jericho has by no means of the imagination been a sucessful footballer at this stage of his career, but i do believe he could play a role for us. Claiming that he has nothing going for him is a case of letting your emotions get in the way.

Im nobodies yes man Dandy. Id expect better from you.

Nah, I know for a fact that you're not like that, but certain other posters seem to be taking "well, the club is doing it, so it must be right" stance. Regardless of which side wins the debate on Saturday (I have a feeling neither will), that sort of thinking annoys me.

In the off season when Jericho was retained on the list it did two things as far as perception on this board.

It was overwhelmingly agreed that he should not have been retained on the list.

The second thing was, that he should be given every opportunity to put to bed once and for all if he can make it at the top level. Even his harshest critics agreed he should be given a few games in a row.

Now that he gets his chance all that seems to have been flushed down the toilet. Personally I don't think he can make it. But that does not mean he shouldn't be given the opportunity to play if he has earned it. When I say earning it I mean his, attitude, fitness and performance at training. Clearly he has shown this, seeing as he has been selected. Just as Campbell will get his chance to play this year.

If he plays badly he will be dropped accordingly. All this negativity and spitting absolute fury is pointless. Get behind your team.

He's had a few good games. Played pretty well against Carlton last year at the Dome.

We also have to remember what Carlton did from that game on for the rest of the season. The Blues won four games for the season, had lost five on the trot before playing us, and went on to win only two of their remaining thirteen games for the season. So yeah he kicked some goals, but against what opposition?

Yeah, i agree. Theres no point being a sycophant, the club is not always right.

I have my good old dummy spits like everyone else. I do tend not to post the worst of them though. I find putting my least rational and most emotional thoughts on public record for all to see is generally a bad idea.

Its wrong to think that the goals were any easier for the opposition they came against. In the context of the game, they were important, and at pressure times. If it were that easy, the game would not have been as close as it was. Carlton were no push over that day.
