Luke Jericho Recalled- Why?!!!

I must admit when he came on for the first run, he went for the ball, fumbled it, then over-ran it and I thought, here we go again. But to his credit he went on to have a very good game. His best for the club IMHO. I liked him on the wing more than in the forward line but he did some good work as a forward as well. On the wing, he worked hard to present an option and act as a linkman a couple of times. He was probably a little handball happy early but maybe that was just a way to build up the confidence for the game. Overall, I was VERY happy with his contribution today. Hopefully he can now become consistent and play at a good level week in week out.

Well done Jezza :thumbsu:

I must admit stiffy i was with you up till the last 15 minutes or so

i was disappointed with a couple of late leads where he clearly didn't give it all

but for a full game he was good.

He played serviceable but Im sure the Adelaide Football Club are not writing a new contract extension as we speak. Deserves to hold his spot no doubt. The jury is still out for me. The knockers 6 - The believers half a dozen

Agree, I thought he was alright. Lacks that killer instinct to go after the footy. Be interesting to see if he holds his spot for next week, although it appears he was named in the best.

I'll take a slice of that.

I was happy with his contribution today and if he played like that every week there wouldn't be the controversy that there has been.

The next thing we need to see from Luke is a similar performance in a very tight game, but that's for another day.

Today he contributed.

funnily enough, I was happy with the way Luke played today. however, I thought it was a really good example of a game where he gave something to everyone; i..e those calling for his head, and those a little more generous.

he did some nice things, but he also never looked like at the final moment he committed to the contest. even when he was on his own, taking the ball, that final hard yard, he never "looked" like he attacked the ball.

it can't be a matter of him being soft, because I didn't notice a difference when he was open or in a contest. I wonder if that's his style, and it's a little deceptive. cause I saw him beat a opponent or two, doing the same thing. of course, it's not possible for both to be true - for him to fail to commit to the contest, and beat the opposition to the contest bal (not talking about it spilling to him). could it be just one of those things, where someone looks a certain way?

he looked slow and uncommitted, when running, yet we know he's not, and he outpaced people at times - while looking slow and uncommitted.

my guess, and it's only a guess, is it just might be something to do with his body language. also he's a big unit, is he getting bigger each year?

I understand what you are saying

I always think of Mark Waugh - never looked interested - but that was just his way.

I have NEVER seen another batsman in my time make batting look as easy as Mark Waugh did. Luke Jericho however, does not make the game of football look like that.

I always though Mark Waugh looked stoned half the time. No doubt he wasn't, just the way he looked.Jericho did some good things and had a good game today. He deserves to hold his spot on that performance.
I've made a few comments about him in the last few days. For the record,I don't think he's in our best 22 f the whole list is available. He's not as bad as depicted by a lot on tis board either.

Probably because it's not cricket??? :p

You could be onto something there though CM. I was happy for him today. He really worked pretty solidly the whole time he was on the ground. I thought he seemed to spend more time on the wings than up forward? I laughed when I heard Shaw say "Jericho in and under" - thought Drummond would have had a conniption at that point. To those that say he should do more "off the ball" - like what? Of course on the TV you can't see what players do "off the ball", but I think most of his efforts when he was around the ball and involved in contests today were pretty reasonable. He should retain his spot for next week. And it will definitely be an interesting one to see.

Oh and it appears by the absence of Campbell in both ours and Norwoods line-up indicates that he probably wasn't even under consideration for selection this week due to injury/illness?

He's probably cemented his spot for next week.

Whether that's a good thing or not, we'll find out.

He was quite good today, well for him anyway, but he's certainly no superstar just because of one good game.

If he can perform like that on a consistent basis, then I'll start appreciating him, and stop bagging him.

This beyond a joke now.

I'm sick of hearing how he needs a run of games so we can decide once and for all if he's good enough. He’s 23, has been on the list for 6 years and has played 26 games; the fact of the matter is that he is NOT good enough.

I can’t believe he’s being persisted with. Heck, even Aaron Kite has showed more during the trial matches. All I can say is this better be the last time he’s named in our side. I can’t fathom how a guy who continuously puts in gutless performances when his career is on the line can continue to be rewarded with games. Neil Craig is obviously an advocate to guys who coast on the field and don’t put in 100%. Can you imagine Jericho in an AFL final? Would almost be worth the price of admission.

This may offend alot of you but how can you consider this of Jericho when brent rielly who gets the easiest possesions in the team is finally out of the side along with my all time favourite shirley and we end up thrashing the west coast eagles.

Luke Jericho must be left in the team. He is a gun and adds alot of value to the side. He can play in a number of positions, is fast, skillfull, takes very good marks and has constantly been dropped through no fault of his own while playing for the Crows. When Roo came back after an injury it was Jericho that was dropped. Why? Because Shirley, Doughty and Reilly are all too important to the team? That is bull. If Neil Craig drops Luke and those 3 are playing then Craig gets what he deserves and I will not feel sorry for him if the crows get hammered.

I am also not convinced about van berlo and vince either however being abit young that shirley doughty and reilly I would say give then till the end of the year. But Luke Jericho is great value to the side and as a frustrated Crows fan was very happy seeing him play against the eags yesterday.

You're on a hiding to nothing bagging out Reilly on this board. When fit he's one of our premier midfielders, along with Thompson, Knights & Porplyzia.

Up until the beginning of this year Shirley has justified his position in the side quite easily. The Crows coaching panel obviously thought so, as he has finished high in our B&F for the last two years. His performances this year though have been nothing short of awful. He can probably be thankful that he got injured, because it saved him the ignomy of being dropped to the SANFL this week.

As for Doughty, there's a whole other thread regarding his merits.

VB is one of our Vice-Captains and is arguably the hardest player in our squad. He's never going to be a superstar and he probably won't be a player who racks up 30+ disposals on a regular basis. He's a Mark Bickley type of player.

Like you, I'm not yet conVINCEd, but he's slowly winning me over. He's been much better this year than he was in 05/06 and that's what you'd expect from a player with just 12 games to his credit. Unlike Shirley & Doughty he's still young enough to improve (and he IS improving), so let's lay off him and give him the time & space he needs to grow as a footballer.

Isnt it great that Porps has become a premier midfielder almost overnight?
He's nearly had more memorable games then VB, Knights and Reilly already! And Im lovin' it.

Not offended, but appropriately amazed!

Jericho is not a "gun" (unless you have a completely different definition than the rest of us). He is not the reason the Crows won yesterday so drawing an inference that reilly, shirley out/jericho in = win is a bit of a stretch. What he did yesterday was show perhaps enough of why the coaching panel has had this what appears to be unending faith in him. What he needs to do now is back this performance up in next weeks showdown. If he does that, then, just maybe, folks will start to cut him some slack. If he doesn't he will be verbally lynched from the highest tree the second the game finishes - mark my words.

As for your shot on Reilly, well lets just say it is comments like this that make your comments re Jericho even more ridiculous. Reilly IS a gun. It has taken him a while to develop, but he is an integral part of our young mid-field and we need to see him back.

Just re-read your original post and wondering if you are taking the piss?

"brent rielly who gets the easiest possesions in the team is finally out of the side along with my all time favourite shirley"

Hmmm maybe you are.

Yes.

If you were our sole selector we'd get hammered by 120 points every week going by the above criteria.

Luke contributed enough to warrant selection again next week & I would keep him in the side ahead of Shirley at the moment ... but the reality is that when the likes of Reilly & Knights return, he will be probably the 1st to make way.

Thought Luke played well.

Funny how perspective can differ. From behind the goals i thought he chased, tackled, and put his body on the line for the ball. I specifically remember him diving onto a loose ground ball in an aggressive manner. I come on here, and people are still questioning the effort he put in.

Only in one area for me.

He could have chased harder on occasions when he didn't have the ball.

But he did get a pass overall for the day. :) :thumbsu:

He was ok, but since hes had his shoulder reco he never goes in hard anymore. Staker kicked a goal on him near the end cause he didnt run back but that happens when the games practically over. I reckon he'll only make it as a forward not a wingman.
