Unfortunately if these type of players continue to make our side it shows that we have not improved
Maguane trys hard, but he has no skill and simply does not have the size to play key back, his legs are still so skinny and he def does not have the skill to play off half back.
Gold Coast BOUND!

strange stuff...so he has nothing to offer and then you suggest he is GC bound yeah? Let me suggest that you have a diploma in NFIness.
He reads the play better than most, he understands that its not all about getting it and giving it, its more about getting it and not panicking and assessing the right give, if there and his closing speed is top notch, and although his kicking style isnt of the copy book type, his kicks get to where he wants them to go 9 times out of 10. I would even say with Leppa now imparting his tricks of the trade on him, will get even better. ;)

Well apparantely to one HS scribe he went backwards last year.Which is bullshit. I'm a big fan of McGuane.
From where he started as a skinny runt from Queensland who had no idea about the caper, to where he is now is quite a testament to his work ethic and ability. People just expect results immediately. It doesn't work that way unless you are a born genius. Luke has to work hard at his game as it doesn't come as naturally as others, but his improvement from where he started has been first class.
Definitely a keeper and will be a very good player.

lol people expect results immediately what hes 23 yo and entering his 6th yr.

i know lets do what we do with nearly all of our players wait 7 to 9 yrs decide at the end of it we should have delisted or traded them 5 yrs earlier and then delist them.
of course people who think hes a good player are going to differ with those who think otherwise. he was imo ordinary last yr.

oh hes still a skinny runt who was taken with a very decent pick at 36 and he had plenty of idea.hes not rated mainly because of stupidity size and last but not least ordinary skills.

Yeah let's get rid of McGuane. Problem solved. Top four and flying.
He's not rated by you. Well thanak christ for that! Thankfully the overwhelming majority in this thread see it differently.
You put the question out there and you've been overwhelmingly disgreed with.

Just because the majority disagree with someone doesn't make them wrong.

Honest feedback....

Early days, I was worried. The whole Gaspar/Kellaway syndrome, gives his all but flawed kicking technique.

Since then, he has learnt a hell of a lot about how to handle the monster forwards. In his first year (?), Barry Hall treated him with disdain one day in Sydney, on his way to kicking a bag. Today, I have no problems with him playing on Barry Hall.

And it turns out that his kicking is not as bad as it looks. Needs to control his emotions, such as when he punched that ball behind the goals down at Geelong last year. That was an obvious example, but there are other more subtle examples when he shows his frustrations, and it effects his performance. (See M. Scarlett on how and when to use your emotions as a backman)

I now have no problem with him being our second KPD. He will be even better when there is more resistance up the ground, to stop the balling from coming in frequently at 100miles/hr.

I reckon our defenders aint that bad with Mcgaune probably being our best in my opion its just the ball goes into to much, if the ball didnt go in a much as it does, our defenders wouldnt get as much scrutiny as they do.

In saying that sometimes it is the defenders that turn the ball over which in turn usally means another forward entry for the oppostion.

Never liked him.

However, last year i was surprised and pleased with his defensive skills. He goes in hard and as said earlier has some mongrel in him.

He has been in the system for a while now so we can't use the excuse he is undersized (even though he is, or at least looks like he is). He needs to make CHB his own this year or if he is lucky next year, no point having him as a third tall as they are usually good attacking wise.

I would like to see Post play at CHB as i really rate him.

lol who said to get rid of him immediately. one thing for sure though if we as a team are to improve mcguane will not be a part of the long term and he certainly wont be our chb.
in some ways the club has tried to shore up this position by recruiting rance post grimes and to a lesser degree gourdis.

yep hes not rated by me for obvious reasons which have been stated ad nauseum over the yrs

he is poorly skilled, under sized, and as thick as a brick.
to me the fact he is atm rated our best defender by so many is more an indication of the poor quality of tall defenders on the list than mcguanes ability.
the way its going all three so called regular kpds will need upgrading in time.

finally i didnt put the question i dont need to. i know hes a mediocre player with little real upside.
23 yo 6th yr poor kick poor smarts lacks size not quick its a no brainer that in time we should be looking for a more rounded player than him.

i reckon that even if he is pushed outta chb he can still be a very good 3rd tall. i see him being good at the 3rd up mark/spoil that d kellaway was so good at, only with better running and disposal skills to match. we have all seen him go on those runs through the middle and shrug off tackles to get it in the forward 50, with better players in the middle and down back to support he could become a real rebounding weapon.

yeah, when we were running it out from the backline and we turned it over it killed us. if the backline knows when its comming in, instead of staying near there man knowing that we will turn it over, they can go up and attack and often be free.

I think McGuanne's natural game is to play a bit loose, so he can be damaging on the rebound and also drop off his man and help out his team mates.

The problem for him at the moment is that our midfield and backline turnovers are catching him out because he plays off his man so often.

In the contest he's quite capable, and he's a good kick, just needs to recognise that until our team has eliminated it's turnovers he may have to be more accountable.

Moore thursfield and Mcguane should play 22 rounds together this year. I think they can develop to be a great trio...
Hardwick has been quoted many times as saying these 3 will be our core backline.

Moore was even pushing up to the wing/forward flank at some stages.

Another few preseason or too, they'll get bigger and more athletic. Mind you this doesn't help with us actually get the ball out of the backline in clearences. Or help when the ball comes back because its been turned over in the midfield.

Richmond supporters on this site put down McGuane, Thursfield and Moore as a collective far too often.

Loved Moore's kick going inside 50 which hit the target (Riewoldt?) lace out.

I just facepalm when I hear Post is trying to be moved into the backline when we are crying out for a pack splitter. Don't do to Post what we did to Schulz.

firstly im going to say mcguane went okay.

but i also have to say hall aside who thursfield had the job on with a bit of help from others, the other bulldog forwards racked up the possesions.

murphy and hahn and acker sheesh.

they had just one bloke with height and power to combat i suppose one can say they manged to do that.

Macguane is no Sam Gilbert!

Macguane if to be considered seriously long term needs to get a lot more strength and power from his lower body and legs. His balance and pose in the contest needs to be a lot stronger by improving his mass in mentioned areas.

To me at the monent he doesn't have the skill for a third tall def, the bulk of a CHB or the strength of a FB. His kicking is not fantastic either. So to be considered any chance in a finals team he needs to add power and strength and size to his lower core and legs.

Only trying to be constructive as I see it because I hope all our players can be the best they want to be!

I used to hate McGaune and it takes a lot for me to change my mind on a player due to my stubbornness. He has come along way though and has improved ten fold. To me though I think if we can get a good offer which I think is possible we should trade him to Gold Coast. They will be looking for KPP around his age bracket so we should be able to get a handy pick. Maybe early second round?? A little optimistic but it is unknown what they are willing to offer due to all their picks.
