Luke Mac has been a great player for the club the one problem and can anyone confirm this is as he has got older he has taken a few games to get into his best form and has been having alot of trouble stringing those games together.

The reoccurring calf/soft tissue injuries he admitted were old man injuries, they're only gonna get worse after another pre-season. I hate it, but he'll go. I have a feeling he'll get a slight nudge out the door, although i'm sure the club would never openly admit that. As RTB says - "The grave is full of irreplaceable players."

I think he had osteitis pubis early in his career, before the AFL worked out what caused it. Obviously they worked it out because I haven't heard of an AFL player having it for years.

You may well be right, but I seem to remember he had chronic hamstring issues at Hawthorn? Could be wrong, but I thought he was always susceptible to soft tissue injuries ... this was fixed for a while, but father time has not been kind over the last few years. Has those sinuous, high-twitch muscles which give him his speed/leap, but seem prone to twang at any time. Will be extremely surprised if he plays on in 2015.

Luke's my buddy this year, and I will be almost as heartbroken when he hangs them up as I will be when Pav does. I would love to see him go around one more year, but sadly I don't think it's going to happen.

Having the likes of Luke injured off and on throughout the year hurt us more than him simply being injured for a long stretch. The fact is, when fit, Luke is an upgrade on Silvagni so he'll be picked. The lack of continuity on Thursday selection week to week started to hurt. We rarely went from 1 round to another with an unchanged side.

Luke and the club need to consider how many games he can play, how many of them he could expect to string together, when they could rest him etc etc. This strikes me a little like Darren Glass. I think he'll try for next year and call time when the body cant get up week to week withough significant help or rest.

Yep, as sad as it is it's probably best for the club if McPharlin hangs them up this year.

McPharlin now, Pav in 2015, and Sandi in 2016+, would be the perfect way for the club to stagger the retirements of the big 3 so we don't get hit too hard all at once.

Luke McP will announce his retirement shortly.
Injuries have forced his hand.
More time for his music.

If Pav kicks 40 again in 2015, he keeps his spot IMO. Still not a bad return in the grand scheme of things.

I agree it's a possibility for Pav he's looked pretty fit this year, but then again the end can come pretty quickly for players into their 30s.

I love Luke. His career has been fantastic and has been a great servant of the club.

Sadly, his time is up. At his age, those injuries are not going to stop occurring and we have to accept that we need to move on.

I'd love two more years out of him, not overly confident we're going to get it though.

I used to think Sandi would be the one to go first, but now he looks like he could last the longest.

Any idea why Luke hasn't retired yet? Ross mentioned in his presser that the players had to have their club stuff done by Wednesday before going on their break. There's no reason to delay is there?

Geez give the bloke some time! Everyone at the club were expecting to be playing over these couple weeks. Pulling curtains on your career would be a fairly big decision to make and I am sure the club is giving McPharlin all the time he needs to discuss with family and friends the pros and cons of staying or going.

Definitely don't want to see a Chappell/Lillee/Marsh scenario.

As you say esti,it would be massive to get two more solid seasons from Pav and sandi.

Crikey! You lot had Sandi retiring a couple of years ago and now He is in career best form. Macpharlap is a champion and you would have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He is 2 months older than Brian Lake.

Well if Brian Lake is still injury free then we should definitely keep Mcpharlin!!!
