SAw his game against freo, saw his latest for Will. The boy can play! Can anyone tell me why we keep playing those without talent or heart (obree) and don't give the kid (mcgough included). The season is stuffed already so lets get soemthing good out of it.
I've also been impressed with Nick Maxwell and thought that this weekend was the shacks best game too. Comments anyone?

My only guess as to why Mullins was dropped was because it came down to him or Goughy for a spot in the middle. He's a very calm, clever player, I think he notched up 31 touches on the weekend for Willy so he has to replace O'Bree this week.

McGough should also stay in for a long time - I can understand why he wasn't getting a regular gig in 02/03 - because we were winning clearances. Now that the likes of O'Bree, Licuria and Woewodin aren't producing, McGough is a must as his clearance work is probably only behind Burns and Buckley at the club (in that order), and seeing a Malthouse has some twisted problem with playing Burns in the middle, Goughy is the go.

As for Maxwell, I'm not sure. He was absolutely terrific on the weekend, probably 3rd best behind Mullins and Jarrad (more on him later), but he can play some serious stinkers too. If there is another spot on the list, we should give him a go to see if he can cut it for Wakelin's apprentice.

The kid we should really be looking at for 2005 is Luke Jarrad. Off the top of my head I think he did pre-season with us, so hopefully our attention has been drawn to him. He has something that NONE of our young runners (O'Bree, Mullins, Shackleton, King etc.) have - Class, Speed, Skill and Guts. He is very skinny, but so is Julian Rowe, so give the bloke a chance. Would CERTAINLY do more than the likes of Rhyce Shaw and Shane O'Bree next year. If anyone else has seen Jarrad play, they'll agree I'm sure.
For what it's worth, I also like the way Knight (no.42) goes about his footy too - good tough player with a bit of flair.

But in answer to your question, Mullins is a very impressive young kid who doesn't panic, and Maxwell could be a handy adition to the senior list.

An ideal replacement for O'Bree. Indefinitely going by potential and current output.

I agree with leonmagic in his opinion of Jarred. He should be on our list.

From when we drafted him......

http://collingwoodfc.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=70040

Collingwood recruiting manager Noel Judkins says Luke Mullins became a priority in the AFL pre-season draft, as the youngster from the Murray Bushrangers was expected to go within the first 15 selections in the rookie draft.

Judkins said Mullins had been impressive throughout Collingwood’s pre-season campaign and was therefore firmly in the Magpies’ plans, although Geelong Falcons’ youngster Nick Maxwell was almost claimed on the senior list.

“It was a line ball between him and (Nick) Maxwell we thought that Mullins would definitely be gone by pick 15 in the rookie draft,” Judkins said.

“But we thought that Maxwell would be a bit of chance to still be there (in the rookie draft), because he’s had a bit of osteitis pubis in the past, so we did it that way and it worked out that we got them both.”

“Mullins has been training with us for three weeks and we only had four blokes training with us and he’s been outstanding at training.”

“No-one can question his skill and footy nous, but he’s just got to get his body a bit stronger and just learn to do a bit more running, which he has done over the last three weeks.

“He’s shown he is capable of doing the running that’s required at AFL (level) and we’re just hoping that he can pick that up and keep it going.”

The season is no were near stuffed, last year we were three and five after the eight round... as for Obree not having heart please!!!! he tries hes heart out everyweek

Colin Wisbey's major concern for Mullins was his ability to gain weight. I think he has gained around 4 kilos since last year and I don't think he has to gain much more.
He is an outside player who can also do the inside stuff like clearences well. The only problem is right now he might get pushed out of the contest easily and his inside work is nullified. But he could become a very hand player, he can do a number of different midfield roles and play on the forward flank, I don't know about him on the backline however.

If Shackleton can make it, he will be a good player. But I don't think he will make it. They are trying him at different roles, last week on the backline. He went alright, but apparently he starred the week before.

Maxwell is too short to consistantly be a Key position player. He is the same height as Clement and probably plays like him. He is pretty calm, cool and collected just like Clement too. The trouble with him will be competing with a weatlh of smaller backmen and it's hard to see him fitting in with players like Lonie and Clement already there. And that's if he gets promoted.

I have a couple of concerns about him that I hope the coaching staff can fix.

He can't keep his feet, he falls over a lot and then stays down.
When he falls he just lays on the ground looking at the play instead of getting up straight away and getting back into it.
Its called 2nd and 3rd efforts, you hear the coaches talk about it all the time.

The other thing is the defensive side of his game. He will not pick up a man when he is in defense and the opposing team is going into their forward line.

Plus he is not that quick.

But I think most of the above can be fixed over time. Probably worth hanging onto for a year or two to see if he comes up.

My mistake i meant Julian Rowe will be a good player.
Mullins is a dud :p

The mere fact that you rate Jules as a player strips you of any credibility as a scout!!

Oh, and it doesn't matter how good YOU think Rowe is - he thinks he's much better. ;)

We found out one thing about Shackleton on the weekend anyway...he cant play defensive, especially on a leading forward. He got slaughtered by Phibbs or Phipps or whatever his name is. If a Frankston leading forward is giving you the run around, no telling what AFL level players will do in a similar role.

Spot on. I though we had a steal picking up the morrish medalist with a middle pick (around 25-35 wasn't it?) but he has not kicked on at all.

Even lately when midfield spots have been up for grabs, Bo, Luke, Kingy and Goughy have been considered first.

Disappointing.

Mate i dunno what Rowe is doing at Collingwood , he might be going backwards but he is a very good player at TAC level. BTW i picked Walker as my number 1 before the finals. So i couldnt be too bad. :D

Seriously what are Rowes problems at the moment. He did have some injuries last year but he was class.

You guys arent destroying another kid are you?:p

Rowe's currently suffering an injury - inflamed head.

Far too cocky and won't be playing seniors until he realises the real player he is - a new draftee who doesn't own the place.

I know he can play, but boy so does he.

Thanks for that. If he can get his head out of his ars he will be a great player. I like the way he plays. But nothing worse than a kid who hasnt done anything with a big head.Id love to get updates on him. i really rate him as a later pick so id be interested in his progress.

Mullins and Rowe are very similar players and both will make it at AFL level.

I don't know where leonmagic has got Rowey's ego problem from.

My assessment of him would be that he's started the season impressively, getting 20+ posessions in our practice matches and for the Williamstown reserves. Has recently had a minor back related problem.

He has poise and for a guy built like Gumby, goes into packs hard and comes out unscathed, on his feet and either with the footy or in good position, which is what you need to see for the lighter guys.

Uses the ball well, but is still a bit erratic at the higher level he's currently at. I have a query on his left at this stage, but he's the sort of player good enough to find space and get on his preferred leg.

Like Mullins, he's good inside traffic and doesn't shirk physical contests. Like Mullins, he has to build up his motor to get a regular AFL spot accross the middle.

Mullins is A Good Player who i beleive we will be good player at AFL Level.

I'am also Hoping That Shackleton Gets a Game sometime this year because he is a class act.

He should be abck in the team this week after two stuinning performances in a row.
