Stupid, Stupid comment.

Don't visit the boards much, eh?:D
Take a look at all the threads on vics this season- a couple of good games- "Get him in the Australian team...."

At least WA posters are looking down the road with Ronchi, for the most part....

why is tim paine so rated?! he made 200 agaisnt WA and what since?

Making the double ton shows talent, but the hero-worship that has happened since is a bit over the top (Im sure you'll find I have been guilty of this somewhere, just pushing the Tassie kid up there!)

He needs more years yet, probably five because he needs to adapt to keeping and possibly opening the innings. I hope he makes it, but its a mile off

The reason he is so rated is because of the double ton, but stuff all since

I hope Ronchi gets a ODI spot one day, although Haddin is no doubt next in line as he has proven himself at the highest level on several occasions

i would play him as a batter in the 20/20 int cup

Paine, 22, made a terrific start to the season and after four matches averaged 58.42, with a highest score of 215 against Western Australia at Perth. But since he was tasked with wicketkeeping as well as opening the batting, Paine has reached double figures only once from six innings and has averaged 4.66.

FYI all interested

Ronchi is looking like the leading ODI prospect and I'd say Hartley for the tests. Crosswaite is similar to Hartley but is just a little less polished in his keeping and needs more work on his batting. Haddin is either a very average keeper or has never had a good game while I've watched. Just my opinion.

BJ Haddin.

After him its a lottery.
Yeah.

It all depends when Gilly retires, and odds are he'll quit one day cricket before tests.

If he quits ODIs after the world cup, then Haddin should be next in line - being the tournament's leading runscorer this summer's gotta count for something. We'll probly be looking for 2 openers if Hayden goes too, so Haddin may be asked to open with Watson, although he'd be probably more suited down at 6 or 7.

Long term - could be any of them, gotta like Ronchi atm tho.

Anyone got the stats (with bat and gloves) for each of them this summer, in both forms?

2006-07 Australian First-Class Season

Batting and Fielding

Name Mat I NO Runs HS Ave SR 100 50 Ct St
BJ Haddin
5 10 1 370 139 41.11 75.35 1 1 24 2
L Ronchi 4 7 3 240 70 60.00 102.56 - 1 13 5
TD Paine 5 9 0 429 215 47.66 49.42 1 2 5 -
CD Hartley 5 9 1 247 67 30.87 42.15 - 1 29 -
AJ Crosthwaite 5 8 4 201 72* 50.25 49.87 - 1 13 -

All have pretty good figures with the bat, except maybe Hartley who is averaging 30.87. Must give more weight to Paine's average since he opens. Also, figures don't entirely tell the story as Paine has only just started keeping.

Out of left field,

Tim Ludeman from Carlton, expected to get a Victorian rookie contract next year , has represented Victoria in underage cricket, and played 2nd XI cricket for Victoria at 18 making 97.

Obviously wouldn't replace Gilchrist, option after haddin.

Hahaha so he is already an option after Haddin? Hasnt even got a contract with any state team yet, i can see him playing for Australia very soon though.

Hartley's Shield batting av is suprisingly low. What is he like keeping to spinners?

I was making the point that he is very talented and if you look at stats, Ian Healy made his test debut after just 10 first class games.

Timmy Parsons keeps for his school down here in Tassie, he's 13 and made 65 off 40 balls against Grammar last weekend. Also made a really good leg side stumping...so he's in line after Ludeman, who's after Paine, who's after Haddin who's after Gilly who's after Darren Berry.

Statswise (and stats are only ever a guide, not the rule) Ronchi's delivered in both forms.

Hard to go past Haddin in the short term though. At 29 too has plenty of years left. Another thing to think about is if we start regularly playing 4 quicks post-Warney, "best gloveman" isn't as important (cue:Darren Berry have a whinge), as batting ability.

Someone like Ronchi looks capable of doing a Gilly and forcing his way in, in 2-3 years if he has a couple of huge seasons on the trot and some more of these blistering 100s.

I think a case could be made that the best gloveman is more important if you don't have great bowlers creating a huge number of chances. A missed chance may not be as important if you have McGrath and Warne terrorising the oppostion but is your keeper getting an extra 15 runs worth dropping a gun batsman when you don't know when the next chance will come?

Do Queensland even play a spinner? He hasnt had a stumping so that might be a worry.

queensland don't play Doran too often so not many chances for Hartley to get stumpings

some people have mentioned that different keepers are suited to different forms of the game

could australia go for a policy of having a test keeper and a ODI/2020 keeper

As much as I am a massive Ronchi fan, I just can't see an international berthit happening UNLESS it is as a batsman only, and maybe even then a one day batsman only.

As other posters have pointed out, Haddin will get the gig ASA Gilchrist retires. I then suggest that some of the younger ones will have cemented their stats a bit better by then, and either Hartley or maybe Paine will emerge as the leading gloveman.

Will be more than useful though for WA....
