It’s the AFL that have the most power. They wield big power in media and political circles.

The deal with these things is that you do what they want in a crisis (in this case, resign), and they’ll use their power to make it as soft a landing as possible.

I’ve got little doubt it’ll include some sort of position/s or contract/s for Sayers down the track.
