Subi is a beaut patch of grass... i think too much has been looked into it and the whole "wounded knee" thing. Over the past five years it has had a fair whack of knee injuries but who is to say that the next five years it maybe Football Park or Colonial that earn that title.
Sandgropers have always played footy on hard grounds....and it is not just Subi or the WAFL grounds. Any kid that has chased a burley round the park will testify that the only soft spot is usually the yellow sand covering the concrete cricket pitch (apart from the mudlarking swamps out Guildford & Swan View etc which always made for a good change and a day in the mud).
Hard Grounds have made for fast football because the ball just keeps on bouncing along. It is our contribution to the national game.
The Big V always had tougher more robust types that were used to slogging it out on very sticky wickets. The Croweaters made handball creative and an offensive tool....and the sandgropers had the fast game. When the game went national the three styles became one and make it the great game that it is today.
thats my bit...
