For Harmichael, the Gun and sregit, is there anything at all McGuane could do to get you to change your mind? Say if he kicks 2 goals a game, would that be ok? Or 3 goals a game? Or will he forever be a lost cause in yor eyes?

Look, I used to despise Jackson and Post. While Post is gone and therefore a moot point, I had to admit that Jackson found his role as a defensive forward last year (I still think he is a useless midfielder - takes too much time to think). If Jackson simply has to get the ball and kick to the hot spot, or stop his opponent from rebounding out of our forward 50, I think he has a role to play in the side.

Likewise no-one is advocating McGuane going to the backline, where his antics were Richo-esque and not in a good way. Surely you can see that he's now playing forward and doing as good a job as you could hope, regardless of whether it is "only against the shit teams".

Astbury is out injured for round 1, Elton is not ready and would only be thrown to the wolves, while Griff has been identified as a defender for now (I think that will change) mainly from what I can tell because it's better on his shoulders. With Vickery sadly out of form. As MR suggested, McGuane is the best option. His form warrants selection .... and we are trying to win games!!

Ok Harmichael, THE_GUN and co, everyones views on this particular issue have been thrashed to death to the point where I gave up on this thread for a couple of months. Now with the season looming and McGuane looking to be a lock for rd 1 at least, can we try discussing thoughts on alternatives rather than just calling him a sacka and saying he's useless?

One name that has practically disappeared off this board is Tom Derrickx, and probably not without reason. This guy is still on our list though, and AFAIK he aint injured, so could we consider plopping him in a pocket? His contested marking is pretty ok (chest marking not so much), and he certainly needs to show something or he'll be goneski, and gone ahead of our number 16. Don't shhot me down I know there's better alternatives like Astbury, O'h, Elton, and even Griff (even though RFC can't seem to put him in contention as a forward), just trying to open up a discussion point? Also with everyone saying O should be elevated, Dx seems to have been competely forgotten. Don't torch me, I can see his downside too (how not), just want to maybe try to discuss it. Thoughts?

Pebs i was a fan when he started but he has worn me down. He cant seem to clunk anything at the moment so he is down the pecking order.

Can't believe I'm saying this but atm McGuane (who I considered to be one of the most clumbsy players to ever represent the RFC) is probably deserving of a game and probably round 1..... the gamble is... you know he is going to hurt you at some stage when he gives away a dumb free kick or 3 and/or makes a ridiculous turnover.

If he can restrict his input to contesting marks, splitting the odd pack, tackling (somewhere nearer to the hips than the neck would be ideal Luke, although I know this isn't his preferred MO) and kicking the odd goal, I'll be happy (ish). Oh and a team rule.... he isn't allowed past the centre.... He's certainly not the answer but Griffo won't be playing forward it seems for a little while or Astbury it seems, so he's a stop gap. Might help Vickery/JR get one out more...

Couldn't Kamdyn get a game before McGuane or something?

He is lost cause in my eyes presently, however, performance is the measure. two goals would be a fantastic return if it was against all sides and not just the bottom teams. The major one though is reduce the **** ups. I am sick to death of his mistakes which seem to break momentum. Half a season of consistent performance against all sides, less mistakes and performance that shows he can be trusted in a pinch. I would like to feel comfortable that Luke can deliver under pressure. I doubt that after eight years this will change and I honestly think those supporting him are fooling themselves. Can I ask you the following questions? What is the point at which you will admit this guy is no good? When he ***** up again and again are you going to still support him? Everyone admits he is battler after 8 years on the list, do you really believe he will improve Richmond? IMO he won't.

I always come to this thread when I need a laugh.

At the end of the day when they pick the team list for round 1, they're going to go with the best guys available that they believe will win the game. Considering how much we have to choose from at the moment, if McGuane is named, that means the club considers his ability better than other names on the list and if those other kids want to get a game ahead of him they're going to have to improve.

I don't care if he plays or not, I just want the win. I think we're past the point where we need to play kids for development, 2 years ago that was the mindset, 1 year ago we played the kids because we had no depth, this year we don't play the kids unless they're good enough.

Even though I have strong negative opinions about McGuane, I also come here for a laugh because I know when I criticise this bloke that it is going to create an out pouring of emotion from those who wish to defend him. Even though I don't agree with your point about we don't play kid unless they are good enough, because IMO we still need to blood youngsters. We do however need to play best available players and we can debate this forever. I don't believe like others that it is McGuane. Hardwick will sort this out. This forum was not about who plays round one. Just the worth of McGuane. Like your post as it is simple in its message. Just win no matter who is in the team. Yes even if it is McGuane.

I agree sometimes we do need to blood the youngsters but there are ways of doing that without impacting important games (like against Carlton). Such as having them play sub, having them start and then be subbed off or having them play in games against easier opposition.

Elton is the prime example, he will have gained a lot in the game against Adelaide but he could just as easy come away blaming himself for the loss, not a great way to debut.

I think the worth of McGuane and round 1 are one and the same and pretty much what everyone is trying to figure out. If McGuane plays and does well, then isn't he a lock for the 22? Opposite also applies, if he plays and sucks, shouldn't he then be dropped? Problem with McGuane is we don't know until it's over. For all we know McGuane has gone and done a Tuck and bought into the Hardwick gameplan, taking his game to the next level. I'm prepared to give him the chance.

Me too...got to love it big time the chuckles i get from reading the posts on here in regards to Lukey's clumsiness/mistakes and not his worth...

Apparently...if you read some of the funnier posts on here...Lukey is the only AFL player currently playing in the Competition who stuffs up...

A gormless idiot...they would have us believe...jeez it must be galling that the Coaches/other Posters cant see it their way as well...what a larff...

There he is still running around in Tiger colours for the last 8 or more years sending a few of the posters on here into paroxysms of thoughtless anguish...8 long years...what a survivor...:thumbsu:...hats of to you Luke...you do enough...you kick enough goals and take enough marks and lay enough tackles to stay in the side...

And in all that time there has'nt been one up and coming player to displace Luke...think about it...8 years and no one has come near to knocking him off his perch...:p...and taking his place from him in the side...NO ONE...so far...no one...

Where is he...whats his form like this player who is going to replace Lukey....NOW...

How absolutely galling is that for the McGuane haters...:p...gnash your teeth...:p...and complain bitterly...:p...cos thats all you got...:p...

Where was Luke before we were forced to play him in the later half of the year dues to injuries? He only got a game as TV was injured. Your posts are pathetic dribble. Do you actually ever go to a game? Of all the posters on big footy you talk more bullshit than anyone. What are you ten? You post on everything and have nothing of quality to add. Not just on this topic but virtually everything. Childish crap is all you present.

I am not Mcguanes biggest fan. He has been bloody awful down back for 8 years, and still seems prone to brain fades and stupid mistakes. But he up forward he provides a target, can take a mark and steer it through the goals, plus his defensive pressure he offers something up forward. 2 goals a game would be an amazing return and it matters not if it is a 70-30 split on those goals from bottom 8 to top 8 sides as its the teams in the bottom 8 we need to be constantly beating that we fail against.

Try not to make it personal...and i know thats difficult because thats the only weapon McGuane haters have..

I'm not like Luke McGuane where you can make/post cheap vitriolic name calling pot shots at my expense...pffftt..:p...

I can reply to your posts easily it takes no great thought...:p...most of the Lukey haters on here never respond to points raised in his defence...
They never do...and why is that...because since he has moved forward he is starting to turn his game around...the haters cannot cop that...

Lukey McGuane will respond to his vitriolic haters...by kicking goals...and contesting...and turning a game around like he did against the Doggies...
Who has the form to replace Lukey McGuane...in our side right now...tell us all that..

Address and respond to those above points...no...you would rather name call McGuane and the posters that defend his recent efforts up forward...

What a joke...what a larfff...:p...listening to the same old same old...

Hopefully what we may be witnessing is the effect of increased spending on the footy department and increased competition for playing spots and if it drives improvement from our bottom 5 or 6 then that might just be the improvement the whole squad gets pushed for, to improve our ladder position. Just a thought...

To all of his haters, I cannot for the life of me comprehend your arguments.

For one second, simplify the situation.

Jack is our number 1 forward.
Ty will get a gig as it's another tall option.

Now, the easy (tricky for some) part.

Let's see out of these guys who deserves a game before Luke and why/why not:

Elton: NO- Hasn't played one pre-season game. NEXT
Astbury: NO-He's injured. NEXT
O'Hanlon: NO- still young, raw and not played a proper game yet this pre-season. NEXT
A. Edwards: NO- has got no where near it this pre season. NEXT
Knights: NO- has been injured for the past month and needs more match fitness. NEXT
Derrickx: NO- coming back from injury and is not that good anyhow.

You guys harp on about how bad Luke is, however, when you actually take your blinkers off and look at the situation, I would bet both nuts that you cannot legitimately give an excuse as to why any of our other forward options have a) shown and produced more than Luke this pre-season and b) if any of these guys were picked, how on earth they would perform better at AFL level.

I'm all for our youngsters overtaking other players who may not be there at our next premiership, but the fact of the matter is that we are not there yet and Luke McGuane deserves at least round 1 on his pre-season form.

You guys have to understand that round 1 is not going to be picked on how good/bad his 8 year career has been, but on the last few weeks- and he is in the best 6 forward mix that we can compile.

FOR mine you could have made a case for McGunae playing earlier than he did last year as Vickery couldn't get near it, albeit he was injured.
They gifted opportunities to Derickz, Miller and Elton after Vickery departed the scene and eventually handed the gig to Lukey who outperformed them all.
He earned it.
I am far from a McGunae fan, but commonsense suggests right now he is the best option for a second forward - even ahead of Vickery who has looked all at sea in pre-season .... and it's a big reason why I have doubts we will make the top eight. The backline is solid and improving, the midfield elite, but our forward line is still a shambles and way too reliant on our one star key forward Jack.

Its ok Goldie, according to what I have read here, he is all at sea on purpose because he wants to get to R1 uninjured. ;)

Reckon he could easily coast through to round 20 uninjured!

I am a critic, but I will sit on the fence and see what unfolds with Ty, now that we havent got any of the injury, or should i say, exposed injury excuses. Because yeah we will give him the benefit of the doubt on his opening to last year and that he had the shoulder. Lets hope for our sake he comes out and produces, not 100% but 10% more, because last year, it was like playing one man short with him in the game.

I hope so too .... have my reservations ... but worth the benefit of the doubt!
