Even though I think there's so trolling going on here, I don't think any would disagree that he's playing better as a forward than as a back. And on the basis of the preseason he's done better than the alternatives.

Blooding young kids as an alternative does not sound like a sensible option to me for round 1, so he'd have to be a shoe in for the game against Carlton.

Absolutely it's not like vb Edwards has torn it up.

I'm not a big McGuane fan but I must admit that his form is more worthy of a place in the round 1 side than either Edwards or Vickery. That's a sad indictment on Edwards and Vickery isn't it?

He is improving as a forward and at the moment he seems to be our best option... I'm getting worried now

I think he will definitely be playing round 1 and this could define his season. We really do need him to stand up because we do not have an imposing forward on our list and as a result Jack gets double teamed out of the game (especially against good teams).

He is not the most skillful player but he tries harder than most and can apply pressure. If I recall correctly he was drafted as a forward now if you could imagine what Riewoldt or Franklin would be like as defenders then maybe it is worth cutting McGuane some slack. For all we know he could develop into the third tall we didn't know we had. In this league if he can average 2 goals a game then he is a quality forward.

If this spud is still playing past round 6 then Richmond is dead meat. Why people keep defending this poor excuse for a footballer is beyond me. This bloke has delivered virtually nothing in his time at Richmond. If we were talking about a third year player making the **** ups McGuane makes we would be saying it is time for him to get his act together or bye bye. Yet people want to give this trash footballer more time. No other club including GCS or GWS wanted him, yet Richmod panics because we had big man injuries last year and keeps the embarrassing fool. As I stated earlier if not replaced by an Asbury, griffiths or someone else soon, then count on another year outside the 8. I have said the tiges will make the 8 but not if he gets regular games, for it would show our list has not improved.

I'm a big fan of Luke McGuane. The one thing with him is that he will always give 100%. He will always chase, tackle, bump and tries his best. He is actually a pretty good contested mark and he has a nice set shot and unlike Jack and Tyrone, he can actually get the ball down forward.

He's a bit clumsy but as he is in the forward line, his mistakes won't be anywhere near as costly as when he was in defence. However, due to that clumsiness, he is not really too confident so he tends to give it off, which in his case is probably the right thing to do. He knows his limitations, he knows every week he has to play his guts out because if he doesn't he may not stay on the list the next year.

He is actually the type of player we need right now. Tyrone has been underwhelming this pre-season and Jack too to a lesser extent. He'll play until Astbury and Elton are good enough to take the spot away from him. He's effectively the new Brad Miller, but he can actually make a decent impact.

I don't know how many of you went to the Praccy game against the Dogs, but he came on around half-way through the third quarter and single-handedly took us out of trouble by kicking two nice goals in that quarter. He isn't anywhere near the best player around. He knows that, and having that mindset is probably the best thing for him. In contrast, Jack has the opposite mindset and its hurting his game.

I truly hope he can cement a spot in our best 22 this year, he seems like a lock for round 1 so best of luck this year Luke.

Just to be completely positive about this guy for once. I believe he would be one of the best KPF. Forwards in the game when it comes to forward pressure. Add this to his average kicking and good marking and he is a better option than an extra small up forward.

It is not personal as I would love Luke to be a good or even a okay player. Fact is though, he's not. For 8 years this guy has fumbled and bumbled his way around and what have we got from his performances, virtually nothing.

I just do not see the point with going with Luke any longer. How many **** ups will the guy deliver this year? How many more times will momentum be stopped when he drops a sitter mark or misses a goal in the square? When he goes back at a critical time and gives away stupid fee kicks will you again be so forgiving? My actual personal issue is with the people that believe he is of any value to the RFC. He has and is stealing games from younger players that need the experience. People on this thread are so intent that younger players are not worthy and must earn their spot, yet Luke's performances over eight years in big games should have stamped his football password never to be played again. We are going to have to disagree on McGuane being our second or even third best option. We can make the eight but will we continue to improve by playing mcGuane? Absolutely not. Though some posters do not want to hear it, we still need to blood and why not gift a few games to a younger player? We have gifted Mcguane many!

Thats why we have affiliated with VFL side Coburg to hone our younger players skills...
Those posters who constantly name call McGuane and malign his football skills and contributions to the side...thats a mindless/futile excercise...
As already posted...McGuane came on in the 3rd quarter against the Doggies and kicked 2 clutch goals to change the momentum of the game...
I cannot remember the last time the tigers won 3 NAB cup games in an opening Season...and McGuane contributed to that...no small feat...
So if you McGuane name callers can offer this thread the names of other alternate players who are able to do what McGuane did against the Doggies...and who are currently kicking goals at Coburg...

Not sure gifting games to the younger guys would fit in with the idea of increasing competition for spots (that has come with the older rookies and drafting). I'm certainly open to change if those in the know can show me that our younger guys are in fact better than Luke. If it was a very close call because the likes of Astbury or Elton were able to provide something like Luke brings to the team then I'd say he's out, because they are the future and would benefit more from the game time than Luke. But at this stage probably not. By the end of the year lets hope the younger ones come along enough to take luke's place in the team but have earned it.

Therefore the argument really comes down to the club's preference of either continuing to develop (for the 10th year in a row), or playing our best side to win games.

They have stated clearly and unequivocally that there will be no more free games. They wil be fielding the team they think will win every week, and at the moment Luke McGuane is in that team - like it or not. He may well be exposed and subsequently dropped but until that happens, I for one am willing to put any further judgements on hold. (FWIW I was surprised ho got a contract extension and if it was as a defender I would have been outraged like you are.)

I think his two terrible misses from point blank range against the dockers last year has clouded many people's judgement of him. His pre-season has been good, and is currently in our best forward set up. If he gets pushed out due to form (his poor or someone at Coburg's good) then so be it, but at the moment it is his spot to lose. More power to you Luke McG! I have doubted you and called for you to be cut, but I did the same for Jake King and now have egg on my face. Happy to be proven wrong again. If he can cut the silly errors and the fumbling under pressure we would have a very dangerous forward.

While Lukey competes, gets his hand on the ball and kicks the odd goal, Vickery doesn't get near it.

You have summed up EVERYTHING that I wanted to say.

The one thing I'm sure of is that when Luke is in the forward line and the ball goes in his direction, there will be no easy mark/spoil/rebound by the opposition defenders. His pressure is second to none and with him and King in the forward line, the ball will be struggling to come out.

getting goals is a bonus.
On preseason form whether Vickery gets a game is more of a worry.

Ok Harmichael, THE_GUN and co, everyones views on this particular issue have been thrashed to death to the point where I gave up on this thread for a couple of months. Now with the season looming and McGuane looking to be a lock for rd 1 at least, can we try discussing thoughts on alternatives rather than just calling him a sacka and saying he's useless?

One name that has practically disappeared off this board is Tom Derrickx, and probably not without reason. This guy is still on our list though, and AFAIK he aint injured, so could we consider plopping him in a pocket? His contested marking is pretty ok (chest marking not so much), and he certainly needs to show something or he'll be goneski, and gone ahead of our number 16. Don't shhot me down I know there's better alternatives like Astbury, O'h, Elton, and even Griff (even though RFC can't seem to put him in contention as a forward), just trying to open up a discussion point? Also with everyone saying O should be elevated, Dx seems to have been competely forgotten. Don't torch me, I can see his downside too (how not), just want to maybe try to discuss it. Thoughts?
