We missed the window (At least this year) with Ratugolea, an addition which I personally think was essential for our chances next year.

We lack a crucial amount of height to utilize for 1v1 contests in the defence, and a lack of consistency from our current stocks means that some taller players from up the ground (The two mentioned in this thread title) may need to start some early off season 1v1 defence practise to pick up on the slack of our current stocks.

Despite having a decently ranked defence (5th ranked for points against) our key defender stocks were clearly a sore spot in 2022.

- McKenzie once again needed to battle through injury and was in and out of the 22 as a result. At least last year he was still able to find form, even after a delayed start. Unlike this year where he could never get the wheels spinning. With that said, he's also getting older and his recent injury history could limit his playing days, as well as his reliability.

- Allir also battled through injury setbacks like McKenzie, but due to a certain senior coach sharting his pants, we ended up making the stupid call to hang Allir out dry in 1v1 contests in spite of his clear injury. And it goes without saying, but Allir is NOT a key 1v1 player, he is a Jake Lever type interceptor and breaks off of the weakest forwards to achieve this. Solving our key defender headache should involve Allir returning to his 2021 self and letting him do what he does best.

- Tom Clurey looked like a 200 game worthy player only a few years ago, but Jesus Christ his form drop off in the last 2 seasons has made him look like the wish.com version of Alipate Carlile. Too slow and short to even make a minor amount of impact anymore. He needs a seriously busy off season if he's any hope of lasting on our list beyond 2023.

- Tom Jonas is one of the most physical players on our team, but has never had the height to lock down a permanent key defensive position. Even his physicality can be questioned though, as he gets older and doesn't have the speed to suit our fast rebound structure. Not to mention he will likely lose the captaincy fore 2023 (At least he should)

I simply don't trust this crop to keep up with the Camerons or Hawkins, and if we can't find any bigger bodies to prevent clutch contested marks in crucial finals matches (Tom Lynch in 2020) than we will once again walk into a new season unprepared to account for the man on man forwards scattered throughout the comp.

Think about the difference that a Toby Nankervis type player can create for our structure.

Lycett is a bollard who's only value is a negating ruckman. Can't run, can't mark, fumbly etc.

And Finlayson doesn't have the aggression to be a good defender.

So no.

We will ride through 2023 with the current guys and hopefully by 2023 either Lord or Pasini can start coming on or we pick up some better defenders through free agency or trade.

I thought a slight role refresh would at least help Lycett to find other routes of impacting our game for the better. His form has been choppy ever since his first year with us. Looks much slower now than he was then too. Sometimes kicks an exciting goal, but I'm willing to sacrifice that for extra defensive height, although after the Skinner experiment I am weary of picking a slow defender.

Just being tall doesn't make a player a good defender. Look at Sam Skinner - tall as * but at AFL level a woeful defender. Good defenders have some combination of speed, aerial ability, defensive instincts, strength, adaptability etc. And Scott Lycett has literally none of those traits bar strength... maybe.

The problem with Lycett is that he just isn't very good. At anything. The only reason why he is a viable option in the ruck is because (1) he is a Hinkley favourite and (2) all our other ruck options have either been neglected, traded out or are green.

The solution to the Lycett option is to simply not play him and either find another option in trade/free agency or actually attempt to a develop a young ruckman through giving them games.

Lycett would be like an extra defender when the ball hits the ground.

Only problem would be, the ball would never hit the ground.

We should copy the Gelong ruck setup.
Where Rhys Stanley, after the centre bounce sometimes drifts into their backline as a spare man.

This strategy is predicated on the atheism of Mark Blicavs; he can play in the ruck, wing, or defence.
Often, he starts on the wing, then rucks around the ground allowing Stanley to be forgotten about and loose in defence.

We have a weapon in Finlayson who not as athletic as Blicavs could start on the wing with either Hayes or Lycett taking the centre bounce.
After the bounce Finlayson would be a defender winger who rucks in the back line.

Finlayson should be free to play the Westhoff role and drift back when needed and he needs to be able to make that decision himself.

If he can see our defence is under the pump he should be the one to float down back and fill the hole for a bit.

He won’t play one on one in defence but should play that floating role when needed.

If we’re playing Charlie, Marshall and Georgi up forward then we really don’t need his height up forward as well and can afford for him to drop back down the field or the wing to provide a taller target.

I reckon against the wind we play Allir, Dixon, Finlayson, and with the wind Allir, Lycett and one of the Muppets

The obsession with getting any defender who is tall has degenerated into turning any tall into a defender.

Lycett is about as suited to playing on Hawkins as Jake Neade. Finlayson, if desperate but not by choice.

Clurey Jonas and McKenzie are 10 x better on players like Hawkins than Lycett and Finlayson ever will be.

The Westhoff role (aka the we're-selecting-a-key-forward-but-not-really role) can be fired into the sun with anyone who suggests it keeping it company.
The Westhoff was s**t as implemented. It SHOULD have been in addition to having 3 KPF's, not used to have 1 KPF, Westhoff as a not-KPF and Jake Neade/Sam Gray/Kane Mitchell at FF.

Just bite the bullet and ease Dixon out, leaving Marshall, MG and Finlayson as our 3 KPF's and Hayes as Ruck. I'd push Dixon back as KPD, whilst we draft two KPD's this year and let him take the place of Jonas, so we've some more desperately needed height down back.

Finlayson would need to find the Marshall juice and become much better in contested marking situations to play as a true KPD. Lycett, well that is just a joke.

Dixon is probably a better option than the two suggested names. At least he is a contested beast who wouldn't get outmarked and who provides great second efforts. His age and total lack of experience in this role might work against him.

Brynn Teakle never gets mentioned as a possible defender. He is definitely a better option than Lycett, is more aggressive in marking contests than Finlayson and doesn't lack for height against pretty much anyone. Obviously lacks AFL experience but should at least be played there at SANFL level. Developing a Brogan style player would be handy indeed.
