Big nose is on with Sheehan this week and will attempt to rewrite history.
'GARY Ablett would still be at Geelong if the club had been prepared to renegotiate his final Cats’ contract before Gold Coast swooped, according to his manager Liam Pickering.'
GA signed a 5 year deal in 05 where he was paid overs, and not to his current level or standing in the game. He was overpaid for what he had delivered to date. In 2006 did GA offer to repay the club for being overpaid - NO.
GA tried in 09 to renegotiate a 2 year deal on his existing deal, he did not want to extend. Just to extend the payments he was getting which would have cost team mates their spot in the team.
Lying cant stay married or with a business partner for a reason.

Seriously lying, you have shown you are dollar driven as you are the only manager who has moved players for silly money.

He should have been stripped of his agents licence a long time ago. Have met him once before and would be one of the most deluded humans I have come across.

Keep in mind His Honour Justice Sifris in the proceedings between Pickering and his former business partner Jason Sourasis (Strategic Management Australia AFL Pty Ltd) found in his former business partners favour on the substantive matter. His Honour found:

In the Main Proceeding, Strategic is entitled to damages or compensation in an amount to be determined.

Geelong should of changed the contract. Pickers is right. We still would of got unders just not the ridiculous unders we were getting.

Given Geelong's success in those Premiership years I'm pretty sure re-negotiating wasn't possible as our cap undoubtedly was bursting at the seams. To suggest we needed to get rid of a couple of players to be able to fit Ablett's contract demands is sufficient evidence to assume that winning Premiership was not Ablett's main priority so I'm glad the club didn't acquiesce to the moneygrabber's demands.

I don't recall hearing players wanting to re-negotiate their contracts when they suffer long term injuries or seriously under perform. It is very self serving to insinuate Geelong were taking advantage of Ablett. If anything Geelong had been paying him overs since the first year he arrived and all because of his name. Just because the tables had turned in Geelong's favour for once from 2007 onwards due to Ablett's rise as one of the best midfielders in the comp, Geelong Football Club is all of a sudden the 'bad guy'? Give me a break.

You have to keep in mind that it's not all entirely performance related with certain individuals carrying famous surnames.
Junior brought a lot of people back to the footy. Yes I understand he was not a phenomenon in his early years but he was still a much talked about footballer and made the club a lot of money with memberships, memorabilia and various media outlets using the name to their advantage.
His brother Nathan would have been a similar predicament.

And from the moment of his debut to the end of the 2006 season, Ablett was averaging 15 disposals, 1.4 goals, 1 goal assist (who knows how many score involvements in a single game) and had obtained 14 brownlow votes after 100 games.
Those kind of statistics are eerily similar to Steven Motlop would you not agree and what did he just sign for?

Okay. I've seen the preview for the Open Mike with Pickers. Have you out of interest?
I would agree with him that he was the best player in the game circa 2010 and if he wasn't best paid at Geelong then Pickers did his job as player manager for his client.

However through this era players stayed for unders, sometimes 10-20-30% less than what they could have got on the open market. Wonder how they felt to see Gaz piss off to the GC. I guess there's that that Pickering and Gaz didn't/don't understand. For the record I'm not the **** you gaz, piss off gaz type of fan. Will always be appreciative of his contributions here.

At the end of the day his manager's argument that he wasn't highest paid and that's why he moved won't wash with me. Others stayed. Why couldn't Gary do likewise.

I would find it very, very difficult to believe anything Pickering says.

I have never seen anything but love for Gary Ablett by his former teammates, since his departure. If they're ok with his decision, that's good enough for me. I'm pretty bemused why some supporters take it so personally.

We couldn't though, from what I remember we literally were at 100% of the cap, Costa told Gaz that he would "make it right" come next renewal (which they offered a mil a year too), but by then the ego took over and he went searching for the Cash.
That's fine, look after yourself and all that, I get it as I've done the same previously so no issue with it, but pickers can't change the story just to suit himself (I know I know, it IS pickers...), GC didn't "swoop", Gaz through pickers sounded out the AFL first and foremost, allegedly the GC people were surprised as they didn't expect to be able to snare such a big name so was therefore not even on his radar.
HE went to them to see what kind of money he could get. Great opportunity to make serious coin and good foresight to see it.

Ablett was being paid atleast 50 percent unders in 2007 to 2010 to what the open market would of offered. Not 10 to 30 percent.

Dont think GWS could have even matched the offer to Ablett.

Didn't Dwayne Russell have a go at Geelong players (e.g. the likes of Ling) who publicly say they were ok Ablett's decision as you mentioned, but privately are still dirty on him for disrupting that team, even with 2011.

As in the public "being ok with the decision" doesn't match their actual thoughts on the matter.

No I did not see the preview.
Pickering is like Steven Baker to me. The least interesting footballer and media personality I think I could ever think of. I will probably end up checking it out on YouTube later on though if he happens to speak about Ablett Senior for a minute or so.

I can't imagine Junior was on more money than what Scarlett would have been on in 2010?

And I'm the same as yourself. Couldn't care less now that he left. I fully understand his decision and he was in his own rights to leave for more money and greater exposure from a celebrity point of view (face of the sport in Queensland).

My 'gripe' - if you want to call it that - isn't really with Ablett, it's with the continual charade we're exposed to every time this occurs. I'd prefer far more transparency. Something like "the amount of money can't be matched, it sets me up for life, and I'm going to accept it. But I want to finish my final season here with a premiership." would have been absolutely fine with me. Fair to say too it's not just Ablett we get the same variations on a theme from either.

I heard Pickering talking about this last week.
He didn't want to do it.

He knew precisely what mike was after. He wasn't going to be asking about his career. It was always going to be about buddy and Ablett.
