THERE are some champion players across the AFL who have reached or are nearing the end of great careers and it has made me think, how can the Brisbane Lions tap into this resource?

With that in mind I thought it was worth touching base with Swans’ veteran Jarrad McVeigh via an open letter.

Dear Jarrad,

I’m a past player of the Brisbane Lions and although I don’t have an official role at the club, I’m passionate about seeing them succeed.

STAR SKIPPER: BEAMS NEVER MORE EXCITED BY LIONS

MATCH REPORT: WOUNDED DOGS ESCAPE BRAVE LIONS

YOUNG TALENT: LIONS LOOKING TO FINISH SEASON STRONG

The reason for my note is that I’ve recently heard you are keen to play on next year and there’s been speculation you may be squeezed out at the Swans as they continue to develop a successful list.

If things don’t go to plan at the Swans, I feel you should consider a move to Brisbane.

You’ll always be an icon of the Sydney Swans but I think the Brisbane Lions can help you transition into life off the field and there is no doubt you could play a key role in launching our next successful era.

Jarrad McVeigh reportedly wants to play on next season.
We have a group of highly talented young players on the rise that if we can retain and develop, we will be successful in the very near future.

We have a great depth of young key position players such as Harris Andrews, Eric Hipwood, Dan McStay, Josh Schache, Michael Close and Sam Skinner.

With young guns Jarrod Berry, Hugh McCluggage, Alex Witherden, Cedric Cox, Rhys Mathieson and Lewis Taylor added to experienced high quality midfielders in Dayne Beams Dayne Zorko, Tom Rockliff, Daniel Rich, Allen Christensen and Stefan Martin, the next few years look exciting here in Brisbane.

I am urging the Lions to offer you a contract where you play for as long as your body and form allows and then are guaranteed a further three years as an assistant coach.

The playing offer would be an average wage which may be slightly under what you are currently on but is still good coin.

I can see you playing across half-back where your experience would be crucial in developing an exciting back half. This will also allow us to push Rich back into the midfield.

Why do I think you’re the perfect person for the role?

You’ve played 15 years for Sydney who I respect as the best sporting club in the country and I have a couple of good mates who have been involved with you at the Swans and they speak highly of you.

You’ve grown up and played in a non-AFL state and throughout your career the Swans have been more than relevant on and off the field.

Brisbane has the youngest list in the competition and you would be an enormous asset for these young players, a great mentor for our leadership group and an extension of our coaching staff on the field.

Whether it’s coaching or football administration that you want to get into, I’d suggest a move away from the Swans is recommended.

I’m sure if you were keen to ultimately end up at the Swans in either role, they’d endorse the philosophy of gaining experience on the outside first.

Anyway Jarrad, congratulations on a stellar career to date and if the opportunity arises that you’d look outside the Swans to play next year, please sing out.

Cheers, Alastair

This is a classic - 'like he wouldn't know who he is'. So modest Lynchy.
Love his passion! AND IT IS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE SHOWED IT IN THE MEDIA.

Yes me too. Stays quiet on a lot of things he could make a difference on, then chooses to almost pressure the club into a path and player they may have zero interest in. Just bizzare to me.

Fagan has mentioned a few times that he and Lynch catch up a lot for golf etc. I wouldn't assume that he's talking out of turn

I like the idea. Think it makes real sense from a leadership and development point of view. But also, he's not cooked by any rate either. His ability to rebound out of 50 has been as good as anyone over the past 5-10 years and footy wise I still think he's got plenty to offer. And probably more importantly, his experience would take a heap of pressure off Harris when organizing defensive set ups and positioning.

The thing about McVeigh as a footballer is that he can play 3 or 4 roles. We might be suddenly flush for half back flank options but he could just as easily play wing, half forward or even as a bench mid, depending on where he was needed.

I think calling him a poor man's Hodge would probably be a bit cruel but he brings similar attributes (albeit at a slightly lower standard) to a football club with his leadership, game sense and versatility.

The best opening line I have seen for a while. You may not be official yet, Lynchy, but you will be. And over time will be a huge assett to our club, IMO.

McVeigh ticks another box in terms of adding IP from clubs of "excellence".

Hawthorn - Fagan - tick
Adelaide - Noble - tick
Western Bulldogs - Adcock - tick
Sydney - McVeigh?

I would love McVeigh at the club, if we could get him Hodge or Burgoyne for that play 1 year, assistant coach 2/3 year role that would be ideal. Would only need to play 16-18 H&A games + finals.

Can see a club like the Giants going for him though with a similar deal... if they re we are no chance of securing his services.

agreed but really at this point it is a waste of a list spot for them IMO. They've got so much young talent and already have a fairly large crop of mature players now.

There was a Geelong or Sydney supporter posting on the Giants board that McVeigh and Mackie to the Giants at the end if the year was a done deal, the only question for both was whether it'd be off field only or not.

If that is the case then they are killing their long term ability to stay at the top of the ladder.
They are sacrificing their young talent for these guys for immediate success and that just will not work.
2010 Lions comes to mind.

I tend to think GWS are a unique case. They stockpile first round quality youngsters and then trade those players to plug whatever hole they need to in terms of their best 22 or to further their long term list needs. They simply don't need to keep lesser talents on their list. Most other clubs needs to utilise late draft picks on youngsters in a "hit and hope" that one or two turn out ok. GWS don't need to do that. They've got all the talent they need for now and into the future, they'll continue to have the draft picks to maintain the talent base.

This means can effectively utilise whatever list management strategy they choose. If you look at age spread, clearly they don't have any veterans that have spent their whole careers at the club. So they have to bring those guys in if they want a balanced list age-wise.

IMO, GWS is effectively choosing between using late draft picks and elite (if declining) veterans. I'd do the same if I was their list manager.

Makes lynchy's letter more interesting - mighty be a bidding war situation that we are losing and he is trying to sway him to us by getting the public behind the move - we do seem to have wider support atm. Worth trying to capitalise on it.

Whatever the reason, the letter won't be a stand alone thing without club knowledge.

Fagan would have to know about it....otherwise it is very presumptious of Lynchy to "invite" McVeigh to the Lions...."not sure if they want you, but I'm inviting you anyway..." is basically what it is if no-one at the Lions know.

It is odd alright.
