Mark Macgugan:
The tribunal has ruled that the impact is low. That means the base points become 225, which with reductions for guilty plea and his good record, brings the penalty down to 126.56 points and a one-week suspension. Adding in the reprimand he accepted last week, his points are 170, which is a one week suspension.

Re: Quinten Lynch Tribunal: Live at 5pm AEST

If anyone missed it and is interested, here's Mark Macgugan's step by step account of Lynch's appeal:

17:10 Quinten Lynch is appearing via video link from Perth. His advocate, David Grace QC, is here in person.

17:11 Big Q will be suspended for two weeks if he's unsuccessful here. He's pleading guilty to the charge, but arguing that the contact made was 'low', not 'medium' impact. If he can argue that successfully, he'll only be suspended for one week. So either way, he misses the big clash with the Cats on Friday night.

17:12 Umpire Scott Jeffery has been called as a witness. He made the report on match day. Saying he was 15m from the incident and had a clear view of what occurred.

17:14 Jeffery describes the contact as "flush to the side of Murphy's head". He says Murphy's head appeared to jolt sideways as a result of the contact. But does point out that Murphy was able to continue playing, and was not attended to by a trainer.

17:15 David Grace QC now questioning umpire Jeffery on behalf of Big Q.

17:17 David Grace QC suggesting that Murphy's head went in the opposite direction from which he was hit. Suggesting the Blue may have been trying to milk the free. Jeffery saying he can't recall that happening, but says he is used to players trying to play for frees.

17:17 No further questions. Umpire Jeffery leaves the tribunal.

17:22 David Grace QC is now showing the instructional DVD distributed to clubs that outlines what constitutes 'medium' and 'low' contact. The 'low' contact example shows Brad Green getting bumped by Andrew Welsh. He hopes it will help the tribunal see that Lynch's hit was 'low' according to this example.

17:24 Just waiting for another DVD they've prepared to be played.

17:28 Lynch now being questioned. Says he thought the ball was going to bounce, and his intention was to regain possession for his team. Immediately prior to colliding with Murphy he was focussing on trying to get the ball.

17:28 He says Murphy slipped and came in low, and he felt a "glancing blow" to the bottom of his buttock.

17:29 Lynch being asked if Murphy or any other Carlton player said anything to him about the incident. He says no-one did.

17:30 The chairman of the hearing is David Jones, with Wayne Henwood, Stewart Loewe and Wayne Schimmelbusch on the tribunal.

17:31 Lynch now being questioned by tribunal counsel Andrew Woods. Lynch clarifies where the contact with Murphy was made. Says it was the bottom of his buttock or top of his hamstring. Definitely not his hip.

17:33 Andrew Woods: "Do you agree that in making contact with an opponent, regardless of impact there's more chance of doing damage if you make contact with the head than with another part of the body?" Lynch: "Not if it's low impact, no."

17:34 No more questions for Big Q. Andrew Woods now summing up.

17:35 Andrew Woods addresses the example of the instructional video: says it's a different offense, viewed from a different angle, and says Green's head in the video was bracing to meet the impact, which he believes Murphy's wasn't in this case.

17:37 Woods saying the movement of Murphy's head upon impact indicates the force was greater than low impact. Also says there's a greater potential to cause injury with impact to the head. Says the angle of Lynch's body increases the force of the impact, as opposed to if he'd run straight through. Saying the vision also shows that Lynch didn't slow when he delivered the bump.

17:39 David Grace QC now summing up. Reading out guidelines for levels of impact.

17:41 Now disputes Woods' description of Murphy's head movement as "violent" upon impact. "I'd say it was anything but violent," Grace says. He argues that Murphy's head actually moved in the opposite direction, because he was trying to make sure he got a free. Also pointing out that Murphy got up, took his kick without problem, then followed his kick up and took part in the next passage of play. He was not attended to by any trainers, nor did he or any other Carlton player remonstrate with Lynch over the incident. He says that's a fair indication it was low impact.

17:44 Grace QC says it all happened in a split second, there was no possible way Lynch could have taken evasive action to avoid the collision. Now referring back to the DVD: if that impact on Green (shown in DVD) was low impact, how could the impact on Murphy possibly be classified as medium impact?

17:47 Nothing further from Grace QC. David Jones (chairman) now giving final instructions to the tribunal. Reminding them that the 'reckless' conduct and 'high' contact rulings are not in dispute, just the 'medium' impact. Use the guidelines, including the DVD, and the evidence presented to come up with a decision on whether the contact was 'medium' or 'low', he says.

17:48 We've now left the room so that the tribunal can view the incident again and reach a decision.

17:51 We're back in. Verdict incoming...

17:51 Tribunal not satisfied that the impact was medium.

17:54 The tribunal has ruled that the impact is low. That means the base points become 225, which with reductions for guilty plea and his good record, brings the penalty down to 126.56 points and a one-week suspension. Adding in the reprimand he accepted last week, his points are 170, which is a one week suspension.

17:55 So the Big Q will be free to play against St Kilda in round 17, which is exactly what he was aiming to achieve by bringing his case to the tribunal.

17:56 Over and out from the tribunal.

Re: Quinten Lynch Tribunal: Live at 5pm AEST

great stuff. i'd take one week for the two hits any day of the week.

neither were massive but definately suspension worthy. gotta cop it.

Re: Quinten Lynch Tribunal: Live at 5pm AEST

shows how professional our approach was.

geelong went against the selwood suspension, pretty much using his good character as the basis of their defence. it has nothing to do with the ratings system and the tribunal dont want to hear it.

i was pretty confident we knew what we were doing, we've only challenged in the past when we have a real chance of succeeding.

Melbourne (Trengove) and Geelong (Selwood) uses the Dennis Denuto defence and loss. West Coast defence is based on the frame work of the Tribunal point system and win.

Re: Quinten Lynch Tribunal: Live at 5pm AEST

I don't understand this bit of the recap:

17:51 Tribunal not satisfied that the impact was medium.

17:54 The tribunal has ruled that the impact is low.

What happened in the middle there? Did they say they were not convinced or was that the opinion of the reporter? What happened between 5.51 and 5.54?
