Lynden Dunn exploring possibility of using ligament from donor cadaver to save AFL career

Popular Collingwood defender Lynden Dunn is investigating the possibility of repairing his ACL from a donor cadaver so he can attempt to play again this year.
Dunn is determined to save his career by playing again despite re-tearing his ACL last Thursday in his comeback game in a VFL practice match.
Dunn’s surgeon Julian Feller arrives back from a trip to London on Thursday week and will operate on the veteran defender.

He met Dunn at the airport before flying out in the hours after his Punt Rd accident and discussed a range of possibilities.
Using the ligament from the donor cadaver – from someone who is recently deceased – would mean he could avoid the need for a traditional graft taken from his own hamstring.

It can speed recovery and would give him the best chance of returning to the field late in the year despite the risk with a graft that is still strengthening.
Dunn is completing his own Level 3 coaching certificate after working with Collingwood’s women’s team and would have a range of coaching or development roles open to him if he retired.

But Dunn is prepared to give his AFL career one more crack in the hope that he can return like Goldsack, who played all four finals after being injured in the JLT Series.
Dunn’s manager John Meesen said yesterday he wouldn’t rule out Dunn making an incredible comeback.
“He is 32 years old so this might be the last roll of the dice but he is trying to get back. The best-case scenario would be coming back to winning a premiership,” he told the Herald Sun.
“What he has to gain versus what he has to lose is quite significant from his point of view.

“He is one of the most headstrong blokes you have ever met.”
Dunn is adamant he did not rush back 10 months after his ACL rupture, with Collingwood’s medicos saying he had ticked off all of his strength tests.
Delaying his comeback would not have lessened the risks but in a freak year for knee injuries to key defenders his knee gave away attempting to tackle Richmond’s Ivan Soldo.
Collingwood would likely have a role for Dunn if he does not play on but he is intent on focusing all his energies into returning to play

With the probable retirements of Wells and Ried and the possible retirement of Goldsack I think we can easily find a spot for Dunn next season, would be great if he didnt pull the pin as Kelly won't be ready to back up Roughead next year imo.
Love to see Dunny back.

Though with Roughead and Moore we have the keys down back in capable hands.
Langdon can support as well, with even Howe supporting.

I’d think more than enough as Kelly learns his trade.

Haven't we had a few players in the past using ligament from donor cadaver's? Lee Walker was 1 if I recall correctly. Was Krakouer another?

Personally, I'd be happy to see him do it via more conventional processes and get a 1 year extension allowing a return in 2020.

Krakouer was one. They have a high failure rate, but faster recovery time for obvious reasons. Unlike LARS if they fail it’s not a bomb site in the knee afterwards.

This footage is quite encouraging, despite the obvious serious doubts about Dunn continuing his career on-field.

It suggests his ACL injury on this occasion was isolated, as Tyson Goldsack’s was last year. If Dunn had injured his MCL or meniscus, he would not be back in the gym lifting big weights pre-surgery.

Good man, good character.

Many could learn from him.

So what do you think his chances are of getting back this season?

Too early to say, we don’t know whether he’s going for the allograft yet.

Got excited for a second due to checking the clubs insta and seeing the number 15 out there unfortunately it was just DeGoey

Ha! That briefly confused me too. And then I recognised the brute-like JDG body shape.

Maybe we've kept Oxley around the club in order to harvest him for tendons and ligaments?

Poor old Oxley, I've been reading too much CFC2010.
