i watched the game on saturday night and thought it was really poor aswell.. i just didnt understand the tactic, yes you guys are devastated by injuries, but i still felt your only chance of winnning was to kick it long to one on one contests. you guys have an awesome forward line, gehrig, reiwolt, kosi for a bit down there and milne crumming. i just dont see the point in playing that way... i also felt that your backline could have stood up and beaten the hawks... pretty much on paper even devastated through injuries i think you guys are better then the hawks.. play one on one all over the ground would have been the best tactic for you guys i think but seeing that i was really disapointed.. poor tactic from ross agree/disagree?

Oh Grow up ...

How many were out injured tonight. We are missing about 10 starting players straight away. Thats half a team out ....
Stop with making excuses about who's out. I love the Saints but for far to long we have been making excuses. If your on an AFL list you are meant to be good enough.

Ross Lyon needs to be given time, We have beat the Dogs and the Swans thus far. 2 quality sides but i agree if he doesnt start playing proper football he has to go. We have potentially the best forward line going around so for gods sake kick it in there quick.

I've seen the positives that Ross Lyon has brought to the club. As a Saints supporter I haven't given up as some of you have. I can't beleive that someone who has coached 8 games can be a super coach. That takes time. Last week against the Swans that saints played their best game in 2 years, a 4 qtr effort. Lets not blame injuries, beceuse every team has them. Hopefully the second half we get players back we can have a good run home.

98% of Afl players need time to adapt and learn. They are given the time to mature and become 'good enough'. Every team in the competition has young players on their lists that are earmarked for development. You might not like making excuses, but the fact is losing 12 of your top 25 players to injury IS AN EXCUSE. Sorry, but there ain't much anybody can say to change that.

And you blokes used to try and say you had a better team than us. Thomas got the best out of your side.
Now I forget ... remind me when Geeeelonk last beat the Hawks? And FWIW we do have a better team than you!  Who have Geelong beaten thus far that Saints haven't? Geez... 'lightbulb'... no one! God you are simple! Now run away back to your own board where you will only hear lovely things about your team!

The Saints coach added that his team needed to be patient when trying to best use their forward stars, Riewoldt and Fraser Gehrig.
"Historically, what's worried St Kilda? What do teams historically do to St Kilda? I would argue they drop numbers back on their tall forwards," he said.
"(That) forced even St Kilda last year to play a lot more slow ball.
"So when you're planning for St Kilda, who do you want to stop? You want to stop Nick Riewoldt, Fraser Gehrig and Justin Koschitzke.
"How do they stop that? They put numbers back. How do your counteract that? Well you need smarter ball use that at times means a bit slower tempo - the trap is that you get stuck in slow tempo and you don't make good decisions to take the game on and I felt that happened".

Lyon's game plan makes sense, perhaps the players didn't execute it properly.

Grant Thomas couldn't counter an opposition flood. I used to cringe when the saints would blaze into a crowded forward 50 only to see the ball go back over their heads and carried out into all the open spaces. I remember port adelaide specifically always flooding us effectively and scoring goals on the fast rebound.

We are over-reacting on this one ugly loss. Our wins this year have been sensational. We were too tough for the dees, we totally outclassed the WB's and against the swans we found the perfect balance of tempo football - running back or forward when needed and taking risks on the break.

Lyon's aim is to establish a solid back 6 who can sustain one on one football. When we get back some key personnel (or half our side!) and don't have to help out the defenders as much, i think we'll see more of the style of football Lyon is trying to eminate.

You could have Norm Smith, Jock McHale and Leigh Matthews rolled into one and they'd struggle with the amount of fit players available to the Saints. I reckon that 4-4 is a great result considering that you have a new coach, a new game plan and only about 24 available players. My mob were 3-7 last year without any of those reasons and reasons is what they are...not excuses.

We've NEVER been able to beat the bastards. I've barracked for the Cats for many years but I can only recall two years when we haven't had at least one loss to them. It might have been forgiveable during the 80's but it's pretty hard to cop these days!

I cast my mind back to Grant Thomas' first full year at the helm. With a massive injury list, and following a 122 point thrashing at the hands of Geelong, he dropped four extra back into the Sydney forward line and played Milne and Troy Schwarze alone inside 50. Things got worse injury wise during the game and we lost Hudghton & Aussie Jones during the game. Jason Cripps was forced to play on Barry Hall. We led all night but couldn't hold on and the match ended in an 8.8.56 apiece draw.

The next week we had 24 fit players to choose from, with one of our named emergencies being unavailable. Leigh Montagna and Matt Maguire debuted. We tried to flood, but Collingwood beat us by 89 points.

Grant Thomas said later it was that game that displayed to him that you couldn't consistently win playing like that. Maybe Ross Lyon needs to learn himself. The unfortunate thing is it looks like this will be the team that will play against Fremantle:

B Attard Gwilt L Fisher
HB Gilbert S Fisher Fiora
C Baker Ball Blake
HF Voss Riewoldt Sweeney
F Kos'itzke Gehrig Milne
Foll Rix Harvey Dal Santo
Int Brooks Birss Armitage McQualter

And that is assuming Gehrig, Riewoldt & Dal Santo all come up. Should Ross Lyon really open himself up next week to a possible re-run of the Richmond v Geelong scoreline by refusing to send numbers behind the ball?

The hysteria needs to stop. For three quarters on Saturday night both teams tried to outdo each other with timid, unadventurous and unskillful football. It probably won't happen to the same extent again, but Ross Lyon needs to ensure that we somehow come out the other end of this injury apocalypse with a chance of still playing finals. In the end, we still have four more wins than Richmond and Melbourne combined.

A tad harsh on Lyon IMO.

Rookie coaches always take time to find their feet, it must be hard for Lyon to take over a ready made side and try and stamp his authority over the side. This season you've been ravaged by injury, but your still well within contention to make the finals at almost the halfway stage of the year.

Judge Lyon after he has had 12-18 months in the job, its unfair to judge a rookie coach with lofty critera after only 2 months perfecting his match day coaching capacities.

I think results over the past three years say that we do have a better side than the Cats, even with all the injuries we've had.

Two wins down at Geelong against teams travelling from Perth doesnt really make you a gun side - although, that is kind of what we expect from Geelong fans when they win two in a row.

Just in case you've forgotten, didnt your fans turn on coach and club only two weeks ago after losing to the Kangaroos ?

you clown everytime a team looses people turn to coaches 1st...... sainters do it as well just like every other team.

Wasn't it Essendon?
No, we lost to Collingwood the week after playing in the Sydney draw. Essendon came two weeks after the Collingwood loss.

The funny thing I remember about the Essendon game was sitting in the gods on Level 3 next to two Essendon supporters who, during the third quarter, were arguing over whether a 120 point win or a 130 point win would satisfy them.

Of course we won the last quarter on memory, with Milne kicking a ripper, and it started us on a good vein of form which resulted in us winning our next two matches. And the Essendon supporters went home unhappy that we had got within 90 points of them.

Mate you are an idiot. Who would you have appointed... Probably Gary Lyon or some half-wit you can relate to. Ross Lyon comes with wraps and experience from the past two grand finals. Sydney made the grad final without the stars we have (and won one if you don't recall). In fact the rugby crap you talk of is what beat us in the 2005 pre-lim. I do not think we won a clearance for the entire last quarter... I bet you walked out before the game was over, and then wrote some sooky post bagging GT and the Saints then as well.

The players we have that are fit are under enough pressure from the media without the fans getting up them and putting doubts in their coach. If we want players like Riewoldt and Dal to stay around we need to get behind the coach or they may just go to a more stable club with supporters that don't jump off the bandwagon mid-season.

Bring back Maguire, Maxi, Lenny, Gram, Thommo, Hamill and all the Clarkes and see what type of game we play.

The team could look worse..

I'm eagerly awaiting friday nights game. Freo are in poor form and definitely under the pump. It will be fascinating to see how Ross Lyon goes about tackling freo, how our senior players lead the way and which youngsters stand up.

I'm not sure if we'll win, but have no doubt we'll be competitive - as we were against hawthorn (who let's be honest were very close to full strength, only missing 1 gun - Williams).

We need to use our key forwards more productively if freo sends numbers back..a lot of this comes down to the mids delivery into the forward 50 which was substandard vs the hawks.

If haselby and j carr are out, the midfield battle is relatively even. Our defense has actually worked quite well the last two weeks, the hard task is the mids delivering the ball in a better fashion to create more scoring opportunities for our key forwards. Better accuracy in front of goal is also essential.

If freo places great emphasis on riewoldt and gehrig, and the forward line is struggling, play them out at CHF and try sweeney and/or voss and/or koschitzke closer to goal to free up some one on one contests in our forward 50.

Nice. Thanks for that. I always remembered the Essedun game as being the next week. Thoroughly embarrassed myself. Completely lost it bagging Hird etc etc - was also in the clouds. A (neutral supporter) friend of mine mentioned it again last week - he's refused to go to the footy with me ever since.

I certainly think you have to give Ross Lyon time. The Saints have been decimated by injuries again. But unfortunately you are right about his personality which is important in todays football in selling the Club to the public. Poor Ross always appears and speaks as if he just woken up. Some media training for him is a must. When that is sorted out I'm sure people will look at him more positively.

Doesn't come accross much different to Paul Roos, I know we always seem to compare him to Roos, but Ross has seen it work under that regime. Of course he is going to try to replicate that.
