Loved reading that. Been wondering what was up with him, was clearly the best SANFL player getting around 1-2 years ago, kicked 4 against Collingwood, then bugger all? Dunno bout you blokes, but I'm fricking excited by our list. We've got a huge amount of potential. Many of our best players are hitting 4-5 years of afl, 100+ games, another decent preseason, picking up betts, pods, our midfield is bloody exciting, surely our window is opening up anytime from this year. As long as Sando gets them boxing again and bloody hardening the hell up! ;-)

I don't think anyone said he was unhappy in Adelaide, just that his friends stated that despite being happy to be here he was miffed at the lack of opportunities and was seriously considering leaving for more game time with a few Melbourne clubs sniffing, as reported above. He obviously explored this option but thankfully decided to stay.
Then why didn't Lyons leave when he is basically guaranteed a start in the Dees line-up? Didn't you suggest a few times that he was basically gone...

Given Lyons character, I doubt he had any real intention of leaving Adelaide & the rumours were crap!

He was probably annoyed by lack of opportunities (many on this board including myself suggested he should have played more games in front of those struggling with form/injury), but that doesn't equate automatically to wanting to leave.

I'm still flabbergasted this guy is not getting more games. In the top handful of players in the SANFL, has class and skill and we haven't really bothered to tests him at the highest level...

His 4 against the Pies still sends a bit of juice through my veins!

It's because our midfield was killing it last year

The rumours were real enough and it wasn't just me who heard them. Its fair to say from what's come out that he looked at the option of leaving and that other club(s) showed interest, which was what the rumours were about.
Other unknowns have obviously come into it since the such as further talks with the coach, his like of the town, difficulty in arranging a trade given he was contracted, the prospect of going to a basket case club rather than a stronger one, maybe girlfriends etc.
I'm as glad as anyone to hear he's staying though

In the modern world false rumours can spread quickly, including when people interpret things the wrong way or apply Rooch-Rowe journalism principles.

Like you, I'm glad that Lyons has backed himself in at AFC & Sando does have faith in him.

Rumours can be "real" without ever actually being based in reality.

The rumours were not just that he was exploring his options. They were that he was disgruntled, wanted to leave, was seeking a guaranteed best 21 spot, etc. Those parts were not grounded in reality. The part about exploring his options was - the rest was just interpolation by the people spreading the rumours.

Surely you don't explore other options if you're completely gruntled and under contract, so he must have been at least a bit disgruntled, specifically about onfield time according to those around him, hence the rumour.
Anyway he stayed so its a moot point now.

I don't agree with that. A young player, particularly one who has not solidified his spot, should always be exploring other options. You never know when a great one is going to be offered to you. It's not just footballers either, every young professional should regularly explore options.

The really telling fact here is that he was actually offered a position on a list with more opportunity, and yet he chose to stay. That says plenty to me about how happy he is to be here.

Was never interested in leaving Adelaide, his asking price to Melbourne was very large. He loves Adelaide and loves the club but doesnt have a great rapport with Sanderson which cost him last year

Confused... I havent been on here for a while but in the trading thread I remember lots of posters bagging lyons because he was supposedly unfit, couldnt run out games, plodder, slow, and lots calling for him to be traded. Now theres lots of praise for him.

How many games of footy did I miss in the last few weeks for there to be this huge turn around...

fwiw I was always a Lyons fan

My post praised him for recognising his shortcomings (much along the lines of what you listed) - and committing himself to improving in those areas. If he reaches an AFL standard in those areas then he could become a good footballer. Fail to do so and he could end up at another club in 2015.

Well he'll be out of contract next year, so if he hasn't found a regular spot by then it means we don't really want him and I think he'll be less than happy to stay, and you couldn't blame him if he left.

Can all the stuff about him having a poor attitude stop now? Clearly has his head in the right space.

Its all smoke and mirrors. Lyons put his head down and busted his arse for the Bays every time he pulled the guernsey on. Always looked to good for SANFL footy, hope he gets a solid run in the 1's and holds his spot. Has plenty of upside.

Trading out Vince opens a door for someone. Hope it's Lyons. We are very average at stoppages. Even when we get decent raw clearance numbers they are rarely clean or constructive. Lots of quicks kicks forward. Lyons has some poise and good hands. Vince gone and Thompson entering the twilight. Sloane a jet but better suited to the outside. There's a spot there for him IMO.

The recruitment of another inside midfielder in matt crouch makes this whole situation very interesting...

will be at another club in 2015 as too many ahead of him and his substantial weaknesses cant be overcome

As much as I hate to see myself thinking it, I do think one of Kerridge or Lyons seriously comes under fire with the addition of Crouch. Looking at our current midfield crop on a very basic level, Matt Crouch serves as a replacement for Thompson and Kerridge as an eventual replacement for NVB (hopefully sooner rather than later;)).

That leaves Lyons sitting somewhat in no mans land unfortunately. In order to fit Lyons into the side I guess we could then push players like BCrouch, Dangerfield and Sloane to a more outside role than what they are currently playing, especially the likes of Danger and BCrouch. Vince goes out of the 22 and Lyons comes in, but we are then replacing Vince's elite kicking skills with a decent BCrouch's and an average Dangerfield, not the best to be honest...
Lyons and Kerridge have shown that they can kick a goal or two when pushed forward so hopefully makes midfield rotations a little more flexible.

At the same time we also have players like Wright and Mackay sitting on the outer at this point in time, not to mention Smith looking for some added minutes up on the wing. Our midfield balance is a bit mumbo-jumbo at the moment and hopefully the coaches can find the right combinations over the coming years. I think all our players including Lyons and Wright definitely have the talent, its just whether or not Sando and his team can get these guys all working together effectively as one whole unit.
