There's a big difference between denigrating a player and simply not pumping him up to be something he wasn't. Doughty was a solid player who played dependable defense for a long time. I admire him for that and also for the fact that he seemed a pretty decent bloke. But he was never 'brilliant' and he was a shocking momentum killer more often than not. We may miss him as a club man but we are not missing him in any significant way on the field.
That sums it up pretty well. Brown has filled that role very well without the panic attacks.

I'm not sure why we are criticising selections last year anyway when our side was 5 points off a GF and practically had zero injuries all season. Sure, there were form dips for certain players, but when the team is flying and still winning why should the selectors change anything?
That's the crux of it though isn't it? What could we have done to actually make that GF? But as they say hindsight is a beautiful thing, and I understand completely why Sando took the safe and stable option in his first year. This year he has not rested on his laurels and rewarded the youth as we need to, and I hope he continues to do so.

The fact that we were contending for a flag obviously escaped your attention...

Vince & Douglas were never going to be dropped while they were performing to an acceptable standard and we were contending for a flag. Yes, Douglas has lifted his game this year - but his game last year was nowhere near the standard required for him to be dropped.
As a top 3 team we could have quite justifiably dropped Douglas last year if there had been a player pushing for his spot. Relative to this year, his season 2012 was poor, likely due to the ~8 week injury he sustained in Round 1. If a similar player was in similar form and we were in a similar position this year, I'd fully expect that Sando would drop them.

WRT Doughty, I hope he sends Brodie Smith a Christmas card every year. He's big reason why Mick was able to hold his head high right up to his 231st game.

I think Kerridge is proving Vader that he is more than just a man child. It is a pity we didn't get an extra half a dozen games into him and Lyons last year
Marvellous what an extra 12 months in the system can do for a player.. Difference is that he's ready to play AFL this year, whereas he wasn't last year. Lyons on the other hand probably deserved greater opportunities last year.

Doughty had a great year last year. Let's not confuse his career as a whole, which was solid without being impressive, with his final season in which he was very good.

It's all well and good to say "why didn't we pay a bunch of kids last year?" after the fact. The reality is we were flying last year and had a legitimate chance of playing in a grand final. You've got to go with your best side at that point, and talent alone doesn't put a young kid in the best 22.

I agree that we should be more lax in how much we demand of players before giving them a go, but I strongly disagree with the concept of just giving them games "for as long as they are fit". They get games as long as they perform well enough to keep getting them. If not, they go out and somebody else comes in.

The only question is how to adjudicate what is good enough and what is not. I've been pretty happy with how those decisions have gone the last couple of weeks.

I don't think you understand the point I'm making.

We shouldn't be copying Sydney/Geelong are doing now, because they're at a different level/stage to us.

We should be looking at what they did prior to their premierships and replicating that.

OK I get your point and I agree with what you suggest...we need to start at the beginning. I guess Iam just trying to ensure that we look everywhere so that we dont miss some of the things that other clubs have done. I also believe we should look very hard at what the poor performing clubs to make sure we dont replicate them.

His second quarter was amazing. Shifted onto the ball when we were getting absolutely rolled and then all of a sudden we started winning the clearances and moving the ball well through the middle. A Lyons clearance is worth more than anyone else's.... well unless Dangerfield runs it straight out of the middle and kicks a goal. :p

He got us going in the second quarter

Fell out of it after half time a bit but that's going to happen.

So important that we develop more clearances players. Can't have the situation we've had this season where Danger/Thommo got sat on and everything dries up.

I don't think he's been fantastic up until the last half of today's game. Previously I thought he was rushing his disposals, almost trying to get rid of a hot potato, but today in the second half he was composed and used all the time he had to make a good decision. Quality disposals from the young man, well done.

He's just getting better with each game! Such a smooth mover, knows how to get the footy in close, keeps his feet in when tackled and is great at keeping his arms free. Particularly in one play in the 4th quarter around the fwd flank/wing: he gets tackled, keeps his arms free and dishes off to Smith who gets a good deep entry I50 (we may have scored from it too, not sure as that final quarter was just one big blur for me!:D)

My man-crush grows with every game he plays:hearts::hearts::hearts:

Edit: the bit of play I refered to above resulted in Kerridge's 5th goal. Great stuff Lyons!!!

looks like he's starting to get comfortable with the applied pressure - if he keeps his head down and works his ass off he could be anything....

yeah i'm a big fan, so tend to look out for him more than others. his disposal early was dissappointing i thought. i was thinking he looks a bit lazy with some of his disposals. not lazy like he cant be stuffed and doesnt care, but lazy as though he doesnt quite understand the importance of each and every one.

that will come from experience, and i think he's earnt himself a few games now to get it.

He certainly has a bit of Sam Mitchell about him, exactly the type of player we need actually.

If he can continue developing and bulk up that frame of his, he can develop into an excellent clearance player.

Love his decision making in tight.

He got cleaned up by Ziebal before half time so that probably had something to do with it. Love the toughness, skill and composure of some of the kids who have come in this year - Lyons, Laird, Crouch and Kerridge.. I just hope it was more a case of Rendalls Team and not Rendall the man the reason why we have some quality young players on our list at the moment.
