Surely these things are the greatest culinary invention of mankind?
 
Mum used to make these growing up. I've noticed they've become a bit of a fad in cafes in the last year or two. Strange how these things go in cycles.

Coconut Macaroons - tick

Coloured "Macarons" - yecch - too bloody sweet not to mention expensive.

Masterchef does this. If it weren't for Adriano Zumbo's macaron/oon dessert thingy, they never would have gotten so big. Same with the Snow Egg at Quay. People go there just for that now.
 
Anyone saying overrated just hasn't had good ones. I.e. if they're "too sweet" it means they're not very good.

And yes, they're expensive, but oh so worth it.
