What was homophobic about the post of Smith and Dangerfield. They're portraying a scene from a mainstream movie, but it wasn't the characters they went as. Does he also think the movie is homophobic and we should all ban it.
It's because the punchline was the idea that losing a grand final is so bad it turns you gay.

And it also just smacked a little bit of teenage-level "hurr hurr pretend to act gay for funny" stuff.

No the dressing up or pose wasn't the issue. It was the caption Smith posted - "or could be brokeback, this is what losing a GF does to you". It's not a big deal and Brown didn't make a big deal about it. But it's worth calling out. Had Smith just said "or could be brokeback, depends on how you look at it" - without the other comment, I think that would have been brilliant. Funny. Positive.
The perfect quote would have been Dangerfield addressing retirement by saying, "I just don't know how to quit you"

Yep, I agree wholeheartedly with this. It points out an issue, but it's not "BURN HIM" kind of stuff.

A cheap Brokeback Mountain, hurr hurr gayyyyyy joke isn't the worst thing on earth, but we're not at a point in human relations where we are all so equal that we can roll with being gay being a punchline (again).

I kindof expected it from Baz, but from PFD, it's disappointing.
Respect your opinion and everyone else's on this but just have to disagree strongly. What was the gay joke exactly?

Would Cotton On have taken offense to SDK and Dempsey referencing them in their mad monday costumes and turning up with brown paper bags.

Was Max Holmes breaking the rules going as Caroline Wilson but not when he went as Mitch Clearly or Gerard Whateley in the previous years. Who knows but I'm sure there'll be plenty of people piling on like Kane Cornes saying it was offensive or disrespectful.

Were Geelong players being disrespectful to elderly people in 2022 when they went as old people to play up to the too old too slow line from the media all that year.

People drawing a questionable line that either Smith or Dangerfield were being disrespectful to gay people is just another sign of the social decay going on around us and the constant need for people to be offended. If any of our AFLW players dressed up and posed in the same way what would we all be saying - my guess is absolutely nothing.

Smith was saying - I feel emasculated after losing on Saturday.
Brown said - I hear you mate, but what's that got to do with Brokeback Mountain?

Meh. I've asked a few gay mates what they thought and they didn't think that at all.

Very overblown as per usual.

That losing a GF is such a bad experience that it turns you gay.
Would Cotton On have taken offense to SDK and Dempsey referencing them in their mad monday costumes and turning up with brown paper bags.
Probably not, but also, Cotton On is a company and doesn't exactly have feelings per se. IMO, being offended isn't sufficient on its own anyway - the offence has to be justified, and it has to be put in broader social context.

No, I don't think Holmes did anything wrong whatsoever in going as Caroline Wilson and I haven't heard a single person bar Kane Cornes get pissy about it.

No, they weren't disrespectful and I don't remember anyone being remotely offended. I think this is a key difference - the retirement village joke in 2022 was Geelong having a laugh at themselves. The Brokeback joke makes same-sex attraction the punchline.

I don't think it's any kind of social decay. LGBT people have always been upset by this kind of stuff, it's just that in 1980s we didn't hear from them and didn't really consider their point of view.

I think the AFLW team would be given a little more leniency on this because (a) they have a vastly lower profile, and (b) it's assumed that half the team is LGBT.

When you're automatically on the defensive, for whatever reason, microaggressions are more apparent. It was an impulsive and ill thought out post - although the idea of Smith being homophobic is hilarious. I'm glad someone is calling out the idea that anything not heteronormative or powerful is weak. If you ask Brown, his experience in the AFL indicate that the stigma isn't historic at all.

I get what Brown is about, absolutely. The fear for the next guy to come out, if still playing, is absolutely real. Totally understand.

I don’t see how the Danger and Smith post was homophobic. Yes see the resemblance and post to broke back, but really. Come on.
I think it was just poorly worded by someone who might not have considered what he says might have have a homophobic angle at all.

Ahhh, old people are actually weaker and slower though - and their existence hasn't been questioned, used as an insult, or an excuse to discriminate (not including current ageism in the job market..)...
If an old person is physically attacked its probably because they're considered an easy target, not because they're careless enough to forget to hide their identity from cretins who think they deserve to be attacked for not conforming to their idea of a traditional and heteronormative society.

I think the question here is, are Browns feelings of offence representative of the entire or even vast majority of LGBTQ community, or is it only being paraded as such because the AFL media are using his experience as a lever for their own publicity?

If 'Bill Smith' from Wangaratta wrote to the herald sun and said he was offended by some players inferencing homosexuality at Mad Monday would it even get air time, or did some scumbag journos call Brown to ask his opinion so they could write a story? It feels more like AFL media just wringing Browns experience for all its worth just to have something to write about. Not a single one of them gives a toss about Brown or the gay community. They just care about outrage, selling inches or getting clicks.

I just don't know why we have to listen or respect any of Browns opinions?
He retired years ago and didn't make a sound, comes out as bi (good on him BTW) then has just decided to be a self appointed vocal spokesperson for anything slightly away from hetero.
I respected him greatly when he came out. Lost most of it when 2 days later he decided to be a moral compass for all and sundry and smack clubs who didn't instantly support him, especially clubs with bigger things on and who he had nothing to do with.
Now he's just sprouting opinions like we should take it as an authority?

Kane '119' Cornes called it Geelong's most embarrassing day in a while.

Well it simply was

Geel had a chance with 5 flags , all time best period of sustained success in VFL/AFL history , and to be rated a truly Great club ,but to fall away so badly after beating the same opponent by 7 goals 2 weeks ago

Yes Stewart wasnt available , but to beat Brisb by 7 goals , and then to have a real convincing win against Haw in the PF - i cant think of a better build up or run into a GF , thats why most of the pundits and plenty of Geel supporters were very confident of a Cats win

So so dissappointing to put in such a pathetic effort in the last 40 minutes or so

Brown said - I hear you mate, but what's that got to do with Brokeback Mountain?
Was he saying that? Or is that just an interpretation of what he wrote? It's literally semantics. And he's 24, and probably not the most well-read or well written young man around.

Does every statement now need to be precisely considered in case someone interprets it that they are offended by it?

When Geelong made no statement or comment about Mitch Brown coming out, he was offended by that.

Is it now the case where we must all just support anything or everything and only provide inclusive statements even though it may not be palatable to us due to our own personal beliefs?

And if we are silent or dont support something or say something that could be interpreted as offensive, then we are publically shamed?

It's funny, Bailey has alot of fans in the gay community. And him posting this is no doubt leaning to that. I suspect plenty of gay men would love seeing him in this pose referencing Brokeback. I honestly can't see the fuss.

I've already moved on from Saturday. We lost.
The earth keeps spinning.

It'd be almost impossible to say something at all without causing offence if someone is determined to be offended.

I watch comedians from time to time and I shake my head when they have to explain, before they start, that their show contains humour and no offence is intended.

Like they have to read the audience its Miranda rights so they don't get sued.

Humour is based on light hearted observations of human foibles, idiosyncrasies, traits and reactions to all sorts of situations in life. Humour doesn't exist without that.

Imagine joking about a husband and wife....nope, it's sexist and offensive.

Or joke about an Irishman.....nope, its racist and offensive.

Or joke about short, fat, or tall people.....nope, it's discriminatory and offensive.

Some people are just wound a little too tight, or seek a bit too much attention imo.

And I have no doubt that those who take offense, would not want to be judged on their own choices and statements...

Last post on this for a while

But it was the way Geel lost or got thrashed

There was an excellent post in the Autopsy thread by a poster , in that Geel had only 51 tackles for the game , their lowest count in any game this year

That says it all .
