yeah and i argued with on this exact same issue back then. its not painting your face as a racial taunt/issue, its for a dress up to look like a black athlete. no issue.

On Hey Hey, someone impersonated michael jackson and to impersonate him (from the 80's not 2000's) it would be best to have a black face/body. makes sense to me.

There you go. I don't get offended because he is a fictional character out of an iconic fictional film in which he is the villain. That's the context.
The context behind this as you say is 'topical' in that it trivialises the fact that so many vulnerable children were sexually abused and emotionally scarred.
Can you honestly say if it was your daughter that had been abused by Harris you wouldn't feel offended knowing it was essentially your daughter being represented in that picture?
The whole idea of Mad Monday is to dress up for a laugh... or do you deny that?

if it was my daughter i wouldnt find it funny and i would be offended. are we seriously supposed to not dress up to not offend 1 or 2 people? so you cant dress up as a nazi? you cant dress up as a preist? you cant dress up as a murderer? you cant dress up as a black person? (apparently)

It shouldnt matter if it is fictional or not. isnt the argument of those who are offended that it isnt the costume but its the subject matter. so a fictional or real character shouldnt matter.

White people were never legally the property of black masters in the countries in which such face painting is being used as a comedic device.

I haven't seen pictures of Lisle, but personally I don't have an issue with him painting himself a darker complexion, if he's put some effort into the rest of the outfit. It's hardly the same thing as Sam Newman smearing himself with black shoe polish during an commerical break and pretending to be Nicky Winmar. Jimmy Kimmel used to regularly do a skit on his show pretending to be Karl Malone.



As a genuine satire of specific individuals, I think it's accepted and the Lisle thing would (and should) probably fall into that category. But just doing the blackface and rehashing the old stereotypes of a specific race (especially when that race has been a persecuted minority throughout history) is not ok. I think it's a pretty clear distinction.

Blackface was originally used when people in the film industry wanted 'black' people in their film, but wouldn't employ black people, because they were black.

This is probably more of an issue in the US and the UK, but like the 'ape / monkey' jibes, people should really know better. To not know that wearing black-face, or calling black people monkeys or apes and throwing bananas at them is racist is hard to believe in this day and age.

There are certain things that a reasonable person can reasonably predict could be offensive to a large cross-section of the public. Dressing up as a convicted paedophile and one of his victims falls into this category.
