Madden v Stynes

Saw Madden's whole career and he was streets ahead of Stynes. Stynes was a great player but more of a workhorse whereas Madden was a star. Those hangers he took at Windy hill were something else!!!

When did Madden start to decline? About 1989-90?
I want to say about 1989 was when he started having some back and hammy troubles that was keeping him out of games.

But don't hold me to it.

Found this. He basically played nearly all games (bar missing eight games in 1987) until suddenly falling off the cliff in his last season, 1992. In his second last season, from 23 games he kicked 42.15 and also got 209 hit outs.

Most people who saw Madden, in an honest moment, consider him the greatest ruck they've seen unless they're old enough to have seen Polly Farmer.

My father started watching football in 1969 and says Madden is easily the best he's seen, still. I wish I'd got to see him live- he stopped playing in 1992, I started following in 1993.
Best I saw and maybe best ever. Many of the greats before him seem to be judged on their tap work. To his great tap work he added the marking and pack marking, the goal kicking and was so dangerous when resting forward (from memory and I was young he seemed to go forward a lot between ff and chf) - not as mobile as cox imo

I try not to make a habit of it. I was only 2 at the time of the game.

He went into the game nowhere near fully fit, didn't he?

Can't remember but I recall him running around in circles with Derek Kickett in one of the worst turnovers in the clubs history

Some of those backline turnovers were pretty horrible. They must have happened to other sides too but I just noticed them more when they were essendon

Madden was an awesome sight on the field. we were spoiled by having such an excellent ruckman for so long. I remember when Somerville and Alessio took over and I realized just how phenomenal he was. He'd cover loads of ground, ruck all day and tap straight down the rovers throat. Then he'd rest up forward and take a hanger and kick two or three lazy goals. He became the template for the modern ruckman.

Lol that's what I was trying to say :) spot on

Is Cox the closest of the modern rucks to Madden?
Madden was more mark and kick in the forward line from memory
I would hazard a guess running goals from cox would outnumber maddens maybe 10 to 1
Cox also acted as a really big ruck rover
Madden played more like an old fashioned key position player when he went forward
Hazy recollections though, you tend to remember the spectacular so with madden it was the hangers and never missing on the left whereas with cox it was the mobility and huge running goals

Certainly, Cox is the best ruckman I've seen. My father says he's the best, in his view, since Madden. So I'm interested in comparisons between the two.
The problem is comparing eras
I reckon, and am happy to be corrected, that madden would towel up john Nicholls and cox would shade madden - players and skills and fitness has improved a lot
You can't necessarily go to stats like in cricket because the game has changed e.g. More possessions and uncontested marks

Even Cricket is hard. Look at the width of the bats now, don't even have to swing. Just a defensive push can result in a 4

Yes, covered pitches as well

I've seen footage of that mark and goal against the Eagles before. Amazing effort.
Personally love the mark against Fitzroy. That was the moment as an 8-9 yr old that I had a true footballing hero for the first time. Still have the clipping out of The Sun newspaper somewhere.

That was a great game. We lost but only by a goal and we were playing with 16 men for the best part of the 2nd half against an Eagles side that only lost about 3 games for the season. Madden was an amazing player. There's no-one really who you can compare him to in the last 20 years, Cox and Stynes were totally different players.
