Best selling means nothing. The likes of Katy Perry are best selling because she gets her **** out. The music is not relevant. Robyn is perhaps the best pop singer in the world right now, yet no one down here is interested in her. She's too different; she has short hair, doesn't flip the cans out and has decent lyrics. Does well in Europe fortunately. She actually started out with generic 90's pop, FWIW.

Sinead O'Connor is probably a good comparison.

Similar vintage but refused to "play the game".

Has the voice of an angel, sings about things that matter, kept her kit on.

Must be worse than Madonna.
