With Roland Garros not too far away, clay court season really gets cracking this week in Madrid. Most of the top players are here and interesting matchups across the board. Main draw started last night.

rd1: Maria v Lucic- Baroni match, coming up soon. 840pm

Dasha is already out of the tournament, I don't know anything about her opponent
Cici Bellis is a real up and comer. 18 years old and i think she made the 3rd round of the US IIRC. has beaten Aga this year(hasnt everyone though)

Dasha should win on clay but Cici plays some good shots if you give her a chance. she lacks a serve though but i havent watched her for a bit overa year.

N. Kyrgios is back tonight playing against Marco Bahgdaits

and then the big match later Maria v Bouchard. That will be fun
Haha after her recent comments Genie might be receiving a few bullet serves or body shots from Maria!

Sharapova v Genie (~4am) and Kyrgios v Baghdatis (~2am) as mentioned.

Other matches of note on tonight are:
Monfils v Simon
CSN v Wozniacki

Who is Ernesto Escobedo? Apparently ranked at 81. Never heard of him but he is playing Lopez.

Tomic is on tomorrow night against Harrison approx 7pm. Bookermakers have him the favourite.

Bellis had been playing predominately 25K events up until 11 months ago before turning her attention to 50K events. Over the course she has made the most of some of the WC's that have come her way in particular last year @ Stanford QF and US Open 3rd Rd (as mentioned already). These efforts were followed by Quebec City QF; 2x 50K titles in Canada and a 125K title in Hawaii (clever vulturing there).

She skipped the AO (in fact she's never played over here, not even as a junior) and Madrid is only her 6th tourney this year where her best effort so far would be Dubai QF which is where she beat Aga.

Pretty talented young American, like his game. Seems ok on the clay but prefers hard courts. Big hitter for his size but could probably move a bit better. Wouldn't be surprised if he topples Lopez.

Tsonga v Kuznetsov on now, real battle.
Bouchard scores an upset win against Sharapova. 2hrs 51mins for the competitive match.

Kyrgios to play the winner of Tomic vs Ryan Harrison.

Gee, Tomic vs Harrison. Would anyone actually attending that match want either player to win?
Interesting, will this be the first time we get a Kyrgios v Tomic match?

Can't imagine being so close the French that they would pull any of the usual stunts (injury/tank/gastro..etc) to avoid meeting each other? Madrid isn't a mickey mouse tournament.

Bernie is listed as the favourite with the bookmakers to defeat Harrison tonight.

I'll barrack for Harrison, just because he's playing Tomic, no other reason required.....

Nice gesture by Marcos.

Baghdatis's touching gesture for grieving Kyrgios

7Sport on May 9, 2017, 12:32 pm

Playing his first match since the death of his grandfather, a visibly struggling Nick Kyrgios was comforted by Marcos Baghdatis after their match.

Kyrgios made it through the first round of the Madrid Open with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 victory over his Cypriot opponent, but was clearly battling some mental demons throughout the match.

Baghdatis put his arm around Kyrgios at the net and offered some words of encouragement after the young Aussie told him his head had been elsewhere recently.

Stosur is defending semi final points here and at RG, a significant chunk of her current points. She needs to do well in the next month to maintain a top 30 ranking. She won her 2nd round match today.

Harrison wins.
Tomic v Kyrgios matchup avoided (again).
Karlovic v Agut on ESPN now stuck at 4-3 in the third still going as Ivo's matches always do with plenty of tiebreaks.
