Collingwood remains the only team to go through a H & A season undefeated.

Would Collingwood have done so, if the H&A season comprised 22 rounds ?

Essendon is the only team to win 20 "consecutive" games "in the one season", which will probably never be broken.

When talking about consecutive wins overall, Geelong won 23 in a row, which spanned 2 seasons (1952-53), but no club has ever won 20 in a row in the one season.

Legend Larry,
Only desperate supporters bring up a statistic like that. It will never happen to the pies again anyway! You are really missing victory aren't you?

Before Ken McIntyre started his finals systems for the VFL in 1931, football was abit of a shambles. I think you would only count the Essendon season as the closest any team has gone.

Dan24

We will never know what would have happened. All we know is they won 100% of their h & A games. It is the same as Essendon not counting the two years in 1916 and 1917 when they work out percentage of premierships years from years played. Would Essendon have won the flag in those two years if they played? Unlikely, but we will never know. But you still dont count those years. As for the first 20 games, I was not claiming that as a Collingwood record. It is an Essendon record. And you are right the finals system employed does not change the H & A season so whoeer made that comment was a illogical. By the way it might be an old record, but so was Coventry's and everyone was excited about fatboy beating that. So Richmond fan, you are a bit of a dill. Too bad the Tigers choked in the end as always and will miss the finals again when you all thought they were going to make it.

Listen to you all, Don't forget it is Geelong who have won the most games in a row not Collingwood.

I know it was over 2 seasons of competition, but now NO-ONE will EVER beat Geelong's 26 games in a row without a loss (23 wins, 1 draw, 2 wins) between seasons 1952-3

Thanks Doggies.

Kangaroos have the record all tied up 53 wins in a row.

What took Colliwobbles one year now takes 3 or more. And Go cats a draw is not a win , so 23 not 26.

Legend Larry,

Surely it's logical that Essendon's record, IF (i'm not getting cocky) we now go through without a loss and win the flag is better than the '29 record?

Essendon 2000 - 20 wins in a row and an 11 point loss in the H & A season PROVIDING we go on to win the flag without a loss. Collingwood 1929 - 18 wins H & A and a ten goal loss in its first final, went on to take the flag.

You would have to agree that Essendon would be rightly seen as having the superior season, especially given todays circumstances of the draft and salary cap and to some extent a more national competition. Larry, surley you can see that?

Cheers.

I am only saying they have the record intact in that they won 100% of their h & a games, no more. That record is intact.

If you go on to win the flag and lose no finals you will be equal in that you lost only one game through the season. We wont know what the 1929 team would have done with more games, just as we dont know if Essendon could have won a flag in 1916 and 1917. We do know that Collingwood were undefeated in h&a and lost one game the whole season.

You can only compare Essendon fairly to other teams in a 22 h & a season and in that regard I would then agree with you, but you cant say they were better than the 1929 season. Likewise you cant say the 1929 team was better than Essendon over the whole season.

Yeah fair point Larry, you can't really compare the two teams, especially from totally different era's. I just meant that our loss was of lesser importance and points than there's in the final and we've won more games in a row.

Even if we do win this year, this team has another three flags in a row to go to match Coventry and the Collier boys efforts, HIGHLY unlikely. Although Dan might mount a case that because we've finished top twice in a row we've got two to go, just stirring Danny

Rice,

Actually what Collingwood achieved in 1930, 1927, and 1928 is irrelevant.

Those are seperate seasons. We are talking about 1929, here.

It's like saying Adelaide who won in 1997 and 1998, were better than Carlton in 1995, becasue the Crows won 2 and the Blues won one.

You can only look at one individiual year at a time.

You can' say stuff like : "Collinwood went on to win the 1930 GF, and becasue of that, this means that the 1929 team was better than Essendons 2000 team"

What the hell has the 1930 flag got to do with the 1929 succss. Different seasons

Thats right GocatsGo. At least with Essendon getting the record for best start to the season it was a team that is respected.

We note the Pooboys have never gone close. Mayvbe that is why they're supporter base is so thin. 14 wooden spoons would do it to you.

Call it going off on a tangent Dan, different subject. I know it's irrelevent to this season, I merely meant that the Don's in this present era have some work to do to be held in the esteem as the Woods of the late to early Thirties.

No doubt this has been one of if not the best seasons ever, if they go on successfully. The challenge for the Dons though is to be seen in the same league as Collingwood (three-peat + 1), Richmond (back to back 73,74), Dons (84,85) and of course the Hawks of 88,89. The Blues had one of the
best seasons ever, but they, in my opinion are not in the same league as the above teams.

Cheers.
