    Welcome to the Main Board

The objective of the AFL board is to have a board where posters can discuss football in a sensible manner.

If you are not interested in posting in a sensible manner, don’t post here. You might be carded, and/or have your access removed. The Main Board Guidelines are also to be interpreted in conjunction with the site-wide rules, found here: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/help/terms.

There are specific guidelines that all posters ought to be familiar with.

    But before we start:

There's been a lot of incorrect use of team names and nicknames creeping in again recently on the main board.

Things like Norf, Carltank, Essendrug, Richmong, Whoreforn, COLA, Failmantle, West Coke...and so on. We all know what they are.

These are prohibited terms on the main board, purely because they just turn discussion threads to muck.

Please stop using them, we are getting very sick of people continuing to ignore it. Those who continue to flout this rule will be getting cards and may even lose main board access- enough is enough.

It's very simple, call teams either what they're actually called, or use their proper nickname.

    Thanks.

    Stay on topic.
Play the ball, not the man.
Don't attack the team of a poster that posts something you don't like or agree with. This is one of the biggest reasons why topics are derailed. If a thread has started to go off-topic, don't add to the problem. Using the excuse 'It was already off-topic' when you receive an infraction won't work.

    Make it Clear
Thread titles should give a clear indication of the topic. Apart from not wasting users’ time it make searching titles more accurate.

    No dribbling
Posts that add nothing like: ‘hahha’,’lol’, 'Culture', 'I agree', 'Gold' etc are not wanted. Talk about footy, and use the "Like" button if you agree with a post but don't have anything to add.

    Play nice
No name-calling or abuse of posters is tolerated and this also applies to the nicknames given to clubs. You know, 'Norf', Carltank , Bummers, GW$ and that sort of stuff along with the term flog. Terms like "rape" and "butt-hurt" are also not wanted when discussing topics to describe something. Don't use them.

    Trolling
Quite simply: don’t do it. Trolling other teams or posters is not sensible football discussion and having the sentence "This is not a troll but..." doesn't exempt it from being a troll.

Quoting from team boards on the main board
Do not quote a post from a team board and post it here. Ever. Team boards are primarily intended as sanctuaries for supporters of those teams, and it is not appropriate to quote comments from them out of context on other boards. Just don't do it.

    Bumping
Do not bump old threads unless you have new information directly relevant to the topic. That does not mean bumping to show someone was wrong with the benefit of hindsight.

    Who you going to call?
If you see a post that breaches the rules report it, don't quote it and respond. If you think a thread doesn't belong on the AFL board, report it. Don't post in the thread saying it should be on x board. Report it and we’ll deal with it.

    Spam and links.
We welcome all contributions on Big Footy. We do not welcome, however, spam of any sort. And that includes links that promote another site. You know the sort of posts, 'I;ve written my preview here' or 'good read at this site' etc. If we regard the link as promoting another site, we will regard it as spam and card it. More info here.

    Playing the man
Play the post not the man. Do not abuse or make it personal. address the post not the poster. Do not, under any circumstances, start a thread about another poster.

    Swear Filter.
Let it do its work. Don't self-censor stuff. Or try to get around it either by using pictures or other tricks

    Other Stuff.
    • Don't quote an entire post if you are responding to a part of it. Edit out the irrelevant parts.
    • We don't need grammar teachers, so leave out comments about spelling, sentence construction
    • No comments about mods or moderation, whether it's this board or another. Take it up with admin.
    • Do not post Rugby threads of any sort on the main board. This is for footy. Not rugby or comparisons between the codes.
    Injury Trolling
    • Don't do it. You'll get an instant card.
    • The same applies to posters who use depression as a guise for trolling
    Gameday and Round Autopsy threads
    • While mods will try to set these up ahead of time, if one is not set up please include the year and round in front of the match for ease of location when moved to the gameday board.

    Topics worth a special mention

We've noted a tendency - particularly in gameday threads - to refer to incidents in the clubs past or current investigations that have little to no actual impact on the game or current issues beyond a troll attempt. This includes:
    • Carltons salary cap issues in 2001-2002
    • North melbournes financial issues
    • Essendons drug investigations
    • Carltons tanking allegations of 2007
    • St Kilda's 'School girl' incidents
    • Port adelaides crowds or finances
    • West coast and drugs
    • Collingwood and alleged crime links
    • Hawthorn drug use by [injunction]

    Drugs in Sport/ASADA Investigation

Please note we presently require all threads and discussion on this matter to be conducted on the Hot Topic Board set aside for this purpose.

    Team Names

There's been a lot of incorrect use of team names and nicknames creeping in again recently on the main board.

Things like Norf, Carltank, Essendrug, Richmong, Whoreforn, COLA, Failmantle, West Coke...and so on. We all know what they are.

These are prohibited terms on the main board. Please stop using them.

To do so is to risk loss of main board access or even your account.

    COLA

Yes, Buddy has moved to Sydney. Yes, it is still very much a topic of discussion now, next season and the season after that, and with that comes discussion of COLA and other forms of assistance from the AFL and otherwise.

However, we are getting a bit sick of the continual COLA trolling/derailing taking place in any vaguely Sydney-related thread. Here are the options for main board posters from this point on:

    - Avoid using COLA Bay-style trolling to derail a thread - expect an infraction if you do so.
    - If a thread is Buddy/Sydney related - be very careful in trying to bring it into the discussion. Is it directly related to the topic at hand? Is it a constructive contribution that benefits the thread? If in doubt, don't do it.
    - If you really, really want to discuss COLA - we have Footy Industry for you, in particular this thread - http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/cost-of-living-allowance-cola-discussion.978731/.

There are other boards on Big Footy – Use Them.
    • The AFL board is not for the general umpire and rules discussion. That is what the umpires board is for.
    • Posts related to the Media and its many different outlets and personalities are to be posted on the Footy Fourth Estate board. This includes complaints about the AFL site.
    • Don't make Dream Team, Supercoach etc comments on the AFL board. Such threads should be posted to the Supercoach/Dreamteam board.
    • Off field conversation - finances, annual reports, crowds, memberships and tv ratings are generally discussed on The Industry Board.
    • Matters pertaining to football History - be it AFL, or state or other australian footy history can be discussed on the new Footy History board.
    • Scandals and Rumours should be properly posted to the Scandals and Rumours board,
    • Got an idea on how to do things better than AD and AA? Go here
Mods will sometimes let one of these threads run on the main board: ask before posting.

    Video Streams

    • International viewers can get live video of games from http://www.afl.livesport.tv/.
    • If a game is not shown on Free-To-Air TV, local viewers can see games on Foxtel or via XBox or T-Box (though you'd need to be desperate given the limitations of T-Box).
    • Please do not post in Gameday threads asking for links to streams - these types of posts clog threads. If you do this your account will be suspended for a day.
    Penalties
    • There may be penalties resulting from actions. You'll find the general Big Footy guidelines here, along with a overview of the card system.
    • Board Bans. Posters may be banned from the main board if they frequently stink the joint up. They will be informed. There is no time limit on a board ban, it is up to the discretion of the mod team.
    • Thread bans. we now have the power to limit a poster's access to a specific thread. The general length of that ban is a week. This will happen if a poster regularly stinks a thread up.
    Prefixes.
    • If a thread has been particularly heated and has been cleaned up often, we might apply a 'play nice' prefix. Please take note because we will have reduced tolerance.
Any questions, get in touch with one of us.

Going the public route is not okay, however, and even more so, doing so in the sanctity of a team board is especially not okay.

I know that theres a desire on the mainboard to start tearing into teams early in the season - we see it every year, but do try to lay of it in round 1 for christs sake.

Seriously, we dont want to see them before round ten.

    Cheers.

I'd also add in general that threads primarily designed to troll are best left for Bay 13.

In addition, because of the spate of Bay-style threads on the main board recently we will not hesitate to dish out an infraction to anyone who wants to convert the main board to the Bay. Thanks.

    Howdy.

There is a de facto acceptance of the fact that a little more tolerance is afforded to posters in these threads. They are set up for light-hearted banter, expressions of frustration and elation at the state of the game, umpires and commentators, and the sort of ribbing of players that is typical of most supporters at one point or another. For example, "how did you drop that, you're a spud, x".

However, we have noticed a trend developing recently where things have begun to get a little out of hand in these threads. In the end, this is the main board, not Bay 13. Therefore, all the usual rules pertaining to Bay nicknames, repeated trolling, quoting posts from team boards here, wanton abuse of other posters and generally offensive posting do apply here, and people would do well to remind themselves of those rules.

Furthermore, any encouragement or propagation of trolling of team boards on the main board will be viewed extremely dimly. This especially relates to troll liking of posts.

If people continue to flout the rules so blatantly, we will have no choice but to crack down on transgressors. This is an official warning to all.

As always, if you see someone doing the above, don't respond to the bait- report them.

    Many thanks.

Also, when you're creating Gameday threads please add the round and year to the title for posterity.

    Thanks.

    Recently we have been coming across a lot of people using incorrect team names deliberately, i.e;

    Norf
    Carltank
    Essendank
    West Coke
    Bullflogs
    Poort
    Ninthmond
    Whoreforn
    COLAs

These terms are not allowed on the main board; it's very simple.

It's really not hard; just use the correct name.

    Hello all,

Recently we have been noticing a real trend developing, of people taking a gripe about moderation of the main board and going to town on that moderator or group of moderators on their home team board.

Put simply, it is not to happen.

It is natural that sometimes you might have an issue with an element of moderation, or a decision a moderator has made. In that instance, you are to either respectfully contact the moderator in question and discuss your issue, or if you don't feel comfortable doing that, contact any of the following Super Moderators and Admins to discuss your grievance:

Please take note of the above. If it keeps happening, quite simply there will be consequences.

    Thank you.

What Doss said. Public mod criticism is not on. In any situation. The recourse is to discuss it with supers/admins, as Doss outlined.

In relation to material being posted on any boards, team boards etc. We expect the material to be deleted as soon as possible.

If you do not feel comfortable doing that, then put it into the moderation queue and contact one of us.

Thread title edited to clear up a misconception that still seems to persist among some.

Mods are posters too, and if you're in a debate with one about a particular issue, there is absolutely nothing wrong with disagreeing- strongly if you wish- with their opinion and expressing that. So if I sit here and try and argue with a straight face that Patrick Ambrose is a better footballer than Jack Gunston, then of course you can tell me how wrong I am and why and that I probably should watch more football. Of course you can.

Just don't attack the moderating publicly. If you have a moderating-related issue, as has been said, nicely PM the mod concerned and/or a Super/Admin and your grievance will be looked at.

    Cheers.

    Bumping old threads

Bumping old threads because its off season and you're bored, posting a lol, meme or something similar to resurrect a thread for no other reason than trolling will get you carded.

Before you do bump an old thread, question whether its reasonable to do so and relevant to footy today.

Being close to the start of the season proper, posters are reminded to abide by the rules defined above, and save the banter and trolling for your own club board or bay 13.

Please reacquaint yourself with the rules once again before contemplating your next post that could potentially see you carded for not playing within the spirit of the main board.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the reminder Mike.

Every year there is a bit of friction moving between the off season and the H&A season as mods try to bring the board back to a bit of a more civil, focused place.

Please help us out, and go to Bay 13 if you want a looser, trollier experience.
