He'd be in our top 5 players for output.
Pav, Sandi, Mundy, Barlow, Broughton.
He doesn't get injured either.

Pav goes onto the vets list in 2012, Dom

Yeah fair call Lach. Happy for him to get something in that ball park just think it'll be tight if we chase a big fish for Tarrant.

If those numbers are right, and he would definitely stay if he was offered that contract, I would chuck it at him. Back end it to coincide with Pav moving to vet's list.
We should be there or thereabouts for the next 3 seasons. If we do win a flag in those 3 seasons, he can happily return to Vic, commanding a healthy figure as a premiership player.
He is an important and required player for mine. Do what it takes to keep him.

This.

He's vital to our premiership chances over the next few years.

I get that he is vital and an important player but this just screams Selfishness. I know he has to look out for himself and all that but for the first 13 game he wasn't our best midfielder, Barlow was. I'd expect in the next few years he still wont be our best midfielder with Barlow, Hill, Morabito and maybe Palmer all going ahead of him.

Yes I understand he is important and I want to keep him too... but seriously 2mill over 3 years.... Gonna hurt us when it comes time to pay Hill, Mora, Palmer, Barlow and even with Pav on the vet list then.

if 2mill is right
get rid of him.

Yes hes been great this year, but not great enough to be asking for that kinda $$$.
Sure we might be able to afford it now.
But look how good some of our youngsters are looking there going to deserve to be paid better in the next few years.
An if we pay mundy that much we wont be able to keep all our young stars.
Then when it comes contract time again for mundy if he continues to play the same way or even improve slightly he will be wanting more again.

If those figures are correct, well sorry mundy but your trade value is highest ever so we can get something of value for u an not risk losing any of our young stars.

In 2 minds over this whole Mundy saga.

Sure, generally every player deserves to earn the most they can get. I hate his holding Freo to ransome timewise with this in a most important trade year for Freo - trade weeks only 2 weeks away now.

We have seen what happens to clubs that play things too far when it comes to salary cap (the Fev drama is destroying Bris). We have some excellent youngsters coming through, not to mention Barlow contract being up in 2 years - though Pav will be veteran listed in another year.

Mundy really has only had the breakout year due to things gelling with Sandi, Barlow's injury and Hill - think about where the opposition taggers go. Would hate to see Mundy go back (appear to) into his shell after getting a massive contract, or us finding out that he really isn't worth it with the return of Barlow and further development of some of younger guys.

The worst sceanario would be retaining Mundy and finding out we can't retain a real champion, ie Barlow, or 2-3 outstanding developing youngsters in 2 years time. Not meaning to undermine Mundy, he is very important to us but not an outright champion.

But I have faith in our club to manage the list's future salary cap limitations with the expectations/possibilities of how our young players develop. If we draft again this year as we have last 2 years we are definitely going to have salary cap problems in 2-4 years, though would rather that problem than any alternative.

The ultimate success of this team in the coming years is dependant not on one player but the team that can be developed and retained.

1.6m, I would say yes. At 2m I would say No.

I would front end whatever we have left in the cap next year, but when Pav goes onto the vets list, we want that spare cash to tie up the young guns. No point in keeping Mundy if we have to let any of the others walk.

If he wants to play in a premiership, as with any player, there is an amount of financial self sacrifice needed so you can keep the right players around you.

None of the premiership contenders could or would pay that much if he left. Only the teams outside the 8 have the cap space.

Not worth 2m IMO.

I have real doubts as to whether he's worth that. Ideally, over the next three years many of our 1st and 2nd year players should go on to have the same output as Mundy does now. Can we guarantee Mundy's output side will remain at this level over the next three? Was this season a one off to boost his value?

I'd want a more sustained record of quality to give that much.

First lets just be clear that it's a reported $2mil - these figures get thrown around from all sorts of sources and they tend not to be right according to the players themselves.

If it is that, is it too much? Yea probably, BUT it depends what state our cap is in. If we can heavily front load it and give him a big payout early and then come down to something more like .5mil in the last couple of seasons or less, then lets do it.

For me it's not the money as such, its what it does to our ability to fit other players in over the long term - the odds of us getting somebody as good as Mundy if we go to the trade table are relatively low, so if we can afford it without shooting ourselves in the foot, lets just get it over with and give him the money.

BTW, comparing him to Fev is just not the same - Fev came with so much baggage you didn't know what you were getting, with Mundy we basically do, plus he's only likely to get better over the next few seasons and most of our other key players are locked in over the next 2-3 seasons anyway - this is nothing like the Fev/Bris situation.

Yeah the Fev problem is due to salary cap and all the off-field (and also some on-field) club culture destroying BS that is Fev.

But there is a lesson there.

We have many young developing players. If we continue to develop our list and team Freo will be outstanding in another 2 years. Those young players will rightfully be entitled to large pay increases.

The problem lies in then asking them to take contract amounts less than they could get elsewhere (which they probably would take) to win a premiership, when there is possibly one (Mundy?) or more that are getting paid way over.

Paying Mundy huge now is a very big risk - if he doesn't perform even better - this will cause a cancer when our young stars then are asked to take lower than fair for the team premiership.

Lets face it Freo's best chance of GF glory and then continued success is not next year, it is realistically 2-4 years. We shouldn't harm that era for the possibilty of what may be in 2011. I place far more "faith" in our developing youngsters and established stars getting us GF glory and sustained success in a few years than I do retaining Mundy and getting a premiership next year. Though I think we can give it a real go in 2012 of course. :)

Everyone jumping at shadows again? We'd only being hearing the Mundy manager side of things including their ambit claim.

Mundy is a 90kg, 192cm clearance/midfielder entering his prime at 25yo who can run all day, appears to have an extremely durable body, is a precise kick and is nearly the most professional athlete at the club (Freo coaches rate DeBeor as THE most professional - direct question from me to Dean Wallis).

In terms of the cap, I'd imagine that our player management team can do all the necessary sums, including those that require adding-up into the future. In that respect Freo are no better or worse position that any other club except GC17.

Give him what he wants, but he has to dump his media-happy clown of a manager.

If he's happy to stay, pay the man. Salary caps going up and up, free agency coming.
Fremantle's window wide open in 2012? Where do we sign? Next.
Agree, and if you front load the contract it wont affect any resignings at all. with the way salaries are going just about all players who are in the AA squad are going to be paid that and you can then backend his last contract to be on the veterans list so only half will count as he will be close to the only player at that time who will be eligible...we will only have a few players on big coin over the next couple of years and with Tarrant gone you can absorb it into the next few years easily

He's so important next season that I think we'll have to pay it. If Mundy departs there's a lot of pressure on Palmer and Barlow to find their best form early in the season and if they don't we'll struggle to make the 8 IMO.

Barlow was out best stat gatherer, Mundy was and still is our best ball user. He is the most important midfielder.

Difficult decision, the club needs to be careful. Like a lot of people have already said, we can't have some of our young stars walk out on the club due to salary cap issues. Mundy is NOT worth 2 million over 3 years compared to other stars of the game; but price is relative and he is very important to our team. If we can not get a like for like midfielder in return as a trade then the club should look at paying it. However the media is wrong more often than not and Mundy may return to Vic even if we agree. He does sound quite selfish.

bit of a harsh thing to say. Mundy has said absolutely nothing, and when he did earlier in the season he made out as if he was going to say. Nobody knows what will happen, but I wouldnt go calling the guy selfish without any evidence. He may be doing the whole Tarrant thing, and wait until the Doig medal to tell everyone he is staying. That is still a couple of weeks away, so I doubt we will hear anything until then.
