Competitions Make Your Own Team - Carlton Board AFL Player Draft Game

So stealing some inspiration from another board doing a similar game... Thinking this might be a fair way of deciding a winner at the end of the season.

An aggregate score of each of these honours. The highest scoring team's coach will be crowned the winner of competition and claiming bragging rights until potentially starting from scratch before the 2026 season and going again.

  • Games Played: 1 point per game (including games "played" as the sub) - Maximum 450 points total (22x22 = 484 so you should have some leeway, especially with your emergency substitute)

  • Brownlow Medal- 1st place - 20 points, 2nd place - 18 points, 3rd place - 16 points, 4th place - 14 points, 5th place - 14 points, 6th place - 12 points, 7th place - 10 points, 8th place - 8 points, 9th place - 6 points, 10th place - 4 points.

  • All Australian: 15 points for team, 5 points for squad

  • Coleman Medal: 10 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 10th place in the goal kicking list.

  • Club B&F: 10 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 10th place

  • AFL Player Ratings: 15 points for 1st ranking on the official website, down to 1 point for 15th.

  • AFLCA Coaches Award: 20 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 20th place

  • AFLPA MVP Award: 1st place - 15 points, 2nd place - 10 points, 3rd place - 5 points

  • Norm Smith Medal: 15 points

  • 22under22: 5 points for team

  • Premiership Player: 5 points for each

Each participant would be held accountable for tallying up their own totals and presenting them at the end of the year. In good faith I'd hope there would be no fudging of numbers so we can get a rightful winner without having to double check everyone's tallies.

Only 22 players on your team are eligible for acquiring points.

In regards to your 23rd member - The emergency sub. You can choose to replace a member of your team with this player when doing your tallies. For instance, in my team I had Ed Allan as my sub, if he has a great year and I feel like he's more chance to tally points than lets say a Tom Mitchell, I can switch him in and bench Tom Mitchell.

If you have a long term injury(6weeks plus) to a player, eg - Nic Newman earlier this week. You can make an additional selection as coverage by announcing to the group your plans to and the player you've picked to take their place (From the players left on the board). However, you may only have 23 players in a team at any one time, so if you do choose to replace an injured player, their points at the end of the year will no longer be eligible for you to acquire and are essentially axed from your team, so choose wisely (Must be a like for like player, so no midfielders coming in for KPFs etc).
Yeah, nah. Not up for tallying all of those criteria. Particularly given the criteria I used for the list build.

That makes a burnt out Nat Fyfe gold, Similar for the likes of Tom Lynch. If it is to become a competition, we needed to set criteria before we commenced.

I am not against a vote of some description should there be a desire to anoint winners and losers. I could be ultra critical of almost all sides for missing components of a balanced squad. Some excel on one or two criteria, but are absolutely frought with issues in other areas. It is so very subjective.

Some teams have spectacular midfields and are weak else where, some the opposite. Some have great defenders, but minimal rebound. Some have some spectacular groups of smalls and/or perceived x-factor, but are lacking “grunt”. Some are almost totally bereft of realistic spine options. (My forwards can be questioned on youth)

I would love the opportunity for a limited mid year corrective “trade” period for unselected players or indeed among participants. If all were keen it would be quite spectacular to have a list management period this time next year.

I get many have a competitive edge and want an outcome, I have a life lesson repressed very deep competitive streak, but we did not lay down any measurements coming in. As I said happy to vote, perhaps 1-4 for each participant. Not sure if it should be on simple preference or driven by a list of criteria.

Thinking I need to add that the exercise and experience was greatly enhanced by not having criteria in place. The individuality of the “coaches” came through quite clearly, despite some selections being dictated to by availability (and depth of research). I learned a little about virtually all of my fellow players and found it somewhat enlightening as to the depth of knowledge.

Would love another iteration in the future and even more so an extension of this if enough participants are still around.

Doesn't exactly reward team balance. The awards are all midfielder focussed.
Yes that is a concern, I probably would have chosen the elite mids over KPDs with this criteria in mind. I'll have a look at how I could tweak it to balance it out.

Otherwise happy with just a vote.

Yeah, it was better with no criteria, as our own vision of how to build a side came to the fore, and we all had different tactics.

You're probably right. Scrap the criteria stuff then! I had a lot of fun making the team in my own vision without worrying about brownlow votes etc.

I'll just make a poll on the presentation thread. We can vote and other forum members can vote.

We know it's all subjective so it's a bit of fun.

In the next iteration of this, having some criteria upfront I think is the way to go though.

I don't mind a voting scenario this time. I just hope it does not develop into a popularity contest instead. Also, with a voting system I just think there are some who may not appreciate some of the value picks. For example, I picked Bodhi Uwland, who was amazing for GC last year and actually finished second in their B&F. He is like what Newman is(/was) for us. But a casual football watcher might very well think "who the **** is that guy" and not appreciate their value to that team.

Also with things like team balance (something it seems a lot of us prioritised), do causal people voting really take the time to go to this depth for all 18 teams in a voting setup?

So I think a criteria based method for future iterations of this might be a better approach.

Should this thread be locked? Might force more traffic to the presentation/poll thread

There's only 18 of us posting in here. I'd say the behind the scenes tweaks, future ponderings, in-jokes etc can stay here, and the actual team comments and analysis (if any) from outsiders can have their space on the other thread.

I like that idea but here's another idea also...

In addition to that, perhaps for those who want to can critique one team every couple of days? I.e. we can start with ITCHY EYEBALLS and for those who want to give their opinion can do so. A couple of days later it can be bradfisher14 whose team we can critique...

I considered doing a short summary of all teams at once but that would take far too long but I reckon if we did one team every couple of days, more of us would be willing to give their opinion when they're able to.

We haven't had any comments from non-participants in that thread yet. I'm not sure that anybody will engage in something they didn't participate in. It's now or never really. Throw up a poll, encourage them to vote in the title and not put any restrictions on them.

This was fun for us and we took ownership of our sides and became draft gurus for a week. For others, there is nothing more than a passing interest in what we were doing.

I'll allow multiple selections to be made in the poll. Hopefully we will get a few comments if/after they vote.

Having said that, we should all help build the thread by commenting on each other's sides.

I mean we can critique each other's team... no way would I expect anyone not involved in the comp to give their insights.

Might be a few others (like me) that didn't participate due to time constraints, but have still followed closely. I've really enjoyed following this thread, and the teams picked. Well done all.

The poll would likely go off on the Main board - other team followers interested to see how their players are represented?

The kicker to this process is it was a draft process - by the time you had your selection, players were gone.

Did you focus on spine or midfield first?

Did you pick rucks early as part of a midfield group or later, laying less value on rucks?

Did you opt for known names, largely because (I) you know little about emerging youth?

Did you focus on balanced defence/attack or all-out attack?

The way we came to our teams is as interesting than the teams themselves in my eyes.

If votes are cast from newly-created accounts ferrisc, ferrisd, ferrise... I deny all knowledge and association... ;)

I had just got half way through a decent analysis on ITCHY's team, going in draft order, but was posting directly in thread, and I just lost it. Opened up a new page and it didn't save. I'm on tilt. I'll have another go later. Might have to post it onto a document then cut and paste it. Grrr
