A balmy summers Saturday day-night game against the Crows in Launceston ….. so many empty seats with only just over 8000 in attendance. Where are we going with a supporter base over there?

Thinking about it …. was a majority of the crowd Hawks supporters? And if that was the case are they paid up and passionate Tassie supporters on the interstate membership deal? How many mainland supporters were there?

Adelaide, and here’s a pun, as the crows fly, is not much further from Launceston than Melbourne. So is there, of that 8000, a fair chunk of the 35,000 supporter base we are supposed to have or are targeting for this year?

Just food for thought.

Yes I’m back. Via my new wireless internet set-up as I travel. With it, if I am not in Melbourne, I will be able to watch every Fox AFL Footy game on the broad screen of my new laptop computer. But, gosh! I’m stranded on the Queensland east-coast with gale force winds and driving squally rain …. HELP!!!!

They sold 16-17 thousand tickets for the game, apparently the weather put some people off.

BTW, don't mistake membership with supporter base, probably 1 in 11/12 Hawthorn 'supporters' are members.

Hawthorn to play the Crows at Aurora

Hawthorn will travel to its second home at Aurora Stadium to play Adelaide in an NAB Cup quarter-final this Saturday after both teams recorded first-round victories at the weekend.

A three-goal, match- winning performance by Hawks full-forward Mark Williams helped his side over the line against a determined Richmond outfit, the Hawks holding on for a 10-point win 1.11.10 (85) to 0.11.9 (75).

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson was happy with his team's ability to hold off the fast-finishing Tigers.

Adelaide was far more impressive in its 72-point demolition of cross-town rivals Port Adelaide.

The Crows kicked 2.16.13 (127) to completely dominate the Power 0.8.7 (55) and send a warning to the Hawks.

But Tasmania's strong Hawthorn supporter base will relish the opportunity to see the club's new recruits in action at Aurora Stadium against the Crows for the first time in 2006 on Saturday.

More than 3000 tickets had been sold for the game before the two quarter-final teams were known and Hawthorn and Adelaide supporters are sure to snap up remaining seats during the week.

Bookings for the game can be made online at www.aflataurorastadium.com.au or through the Princess Theatre 63233666, the Silverdome 63449988, Hobart 62345998, Burnie 64515033 and Devonport 64202900.

Only pre-season game, and since a lot of people travel from hobart to launie (2-3 hour drive) for york park games, probably didn't get as many to do the road-trip during the pre-season.

I'm sure it'll be pretty much sold out during the real season this year at the ground.

They didn't sell anywhere near 16 thousand tickets. :D There were 9,260 odd people there, most of them walk ins. (including me and my girlfriend) It was only a practice match so didn't really get any attention from non hawk/adelaide supporters.

I think over 9,000 was a pretty good turn out for that sort of match, you couldn't really expect more could you?

With due respect, Hawkk, how exactly did you deduce that?
Various research conducted by Roy Morgan and sensis, and an article regarding the sale of the social club; Ian Robson stating that we have a supporter base 10 or 11 times the size of our membership base.

Okay thanks for that, I only got my information from HHQ;

Some moron decided to show it live on FTA against the gate.

Still sold 15-17K in tickets (pre-game sales were on average - just gate takings way down).

I'd say there were probably about 6-7 thousand people who bought tickets just didn't come. (Apparently there were thunderstorms in Hobart, might explain a few thousand southerners no-showing

Round 1 will be a different story.

Interesting .... thanks for that, Hawk. If that is the case it's good news but it would be a lot better if non-member supporters were converted into being paid-up (and hopefuly passionate). I suggest our club's marketing department have the foundations on which to work hard and turn such figures around.

The majority of the crowd were Hawks supporters ..the main crowd killer was the free to air TV coverage into Launceston ..I was debating whether to go and have a look (i'm 2 minutes from the ground) and decided in the end to stay home and watch it on telly .

The person who claimed the weather was a factor wtf ??? it was a balmy night & perfect for watching football .

I agree. There were many contributors to the poor crowd, though i went along for a gander.

It didn't start till 6.40. For many (not just people from hobart but people from the NW coast too) this would have meant getting home at midnight or later.

Also it was scheduled for a saturday night in the second round. How many people don't make plans for saturday nights one way or another?

If it had have been scheduled for a sunday afternoon they would have got more people along, simple.

When it comes to the real stuff that you can actually plan for and make us Tasmanians will be there with bells on. Oh and while i am on York Park. I come from the north-west coast and live in hobart and Launceston and York Park is the only place that AFL footy should be played in Tasmania. Why should or would people from smithton travel 5 hours to go to the footy. I know heaps of people, me included, who don't mind traveling 2 or 3 hours to go to the footy but c'mon, and don't think the bulk of the people who attend the footy ccome from the south either. Peolple from Haobart need to take their heads out of their a*ses. York park is a better ground then Bellerieve now anyway. ;)

According to Joel Smith on Sport927 (you have to love replayed interviews) we have over 3,000 members already this season!

4,000+ a suitable target for Tassie this season?
