Really hope we move some of these players on. Don’t believe they will help us get to a premiership. Not all bad players but we need to get to the next levels.

Players I hope we move on

1. Daniel Wells(should have never signed him. Unquestionable talent but never showed enough hunger to be the best even at the Roos)

2. Levi Greenwood(all heart no class just a terrible user of the ball)

3. Alex Fasolo(great goal sense but just not at the level or consistency we need)

4.) Jarryd Blair(love what he has contributed but feel like the game has moved past him)

5.) josh smith(A very Buckley type player. Extremely hard working and great runner but I don’t see much potential. Might be a bit harsh but feels like his in the mould Levi Greenwood, Jackson Ramsay & co who are albeit a hard workers arnt quite at the level required to win a premiership)

Thoughts?

All aforementioned players are probably depth, but I think that cutting too hard into depth players is a bad idea. There are always injuries and being able to bring in a seasoned, serviceable player (or players) is a far better option than bringing in 4-5 rookies when injuries strike. They're a vital part of a contending list, even if not best 22 in a hypothetical scenario when everyone is available. I think at most you get rid of 2 of those 5, and its probably Blair and Smith in my opinion.

Doesn’t the AFL mandate that it has to be at least 3? I think Oxley and Broomhead are first in line (Broomhead to be rookied), followed possibly by Smith and Blair, so there’s 4 fairly easy ones. Not a big fan of Greenwood but it’d be a surprise to see him go after playing so much and Wells is contracted for next year.

I’m not sure I can agree with this point. If by some miracle we won the premiership in 2018 I could quite easily see 3 guys from that list being involved, not all 3, but I’m certain the match committee could find a role for Fasolo, Greenwood and Smith over the next 8 weeks...

We’re fast approaching the “win now” threshold and once we get there we need a good reason to cut guys that can add something at the next level. If sacrifices are required to acquire Lynch they’ll be in the gun, but I think the likes of Crocker, Kirby and Wills are in more trouble than a few on your list.

IMO, the only certain changes are Blair and Oxley.

Wills is contracted next year

Wills is contracted next year

I assume Crocker is as well, ditto Smith and I know Wells is. I’d personally look to trade Wills because with his injury profile and the emergence of Sier I think his best shot at making it is elsewhere. If a trade isn’t on I would certainly delist him and keep our options open on rookie listing. Broomhead’s another in that boat.

Oxley, Broomhead, Crocker you can add
I'd keep Greenwood for depth.

So Wells, Blair, Fasolo, Smith, Oxley, Broomhead, Crocker are the ones id look at moving on.

In terms of what we need to bring in: (Quality) KPD, KPF, small crumbing fwd, Future replacement for Pendles and a replacement for Wells. We really need Quaynor and Kelly to be very good players.

Ones in bold will be gone i think
Wouldn't mind keeping Smith and Fasolo, rest I probably agree with. Also wouldn't be against delisting Smith but there's an argument for having a few guys on the list who are never intended to be best 22, just non-disastrous back up

This is where I'd guess the club might be heading with our OOC players:

Out Of Contract 2018

1 Alex Fasolo - trade (hopefully for a 2nd round pick?) or re-sign (1 year)
5 Jamie Elliott - re-sign (2-3 years)
6 Tyson Goldsack - re-sign (1 year)
8 Tom Langdon - re-sign (2-3 years)
11 Jarryd Blair - delist
15 Lynden Dunn - retire or re-sign (1-2 years)
19 Levi Greenwood - re-sign (1 year) or trade / delist

23 Sam McLarty - re-sign (2 years)
26 Josh Daicos - re-sign (2 years)
27 Kayle Kirby - retire or rookie list?
29 Tim Broomhead - re-sign (1 year) or retire?

30 Darcy Moore - re-sign (2 years)
31 Flynn Appleby - re-sign as rookie (1 year)
32 Will Hoskin-Elliott - re-sign (3 years)
40 Josh Smith - probably trade / delist, maybe resign for 1 year as depth player.
41 Brody Mihocek - promote / re-sign (2 years), wont get away with leaving him on the rookie list as he'll draw interest from other clubs
43 Adam Oxley - delist
44 Jack Madgen - re-sign as rookie (1 year)

(anticipated outcome is first for players who wont definitely be re-signed)

Even though Wills is contracted until next year I also would not be surprised if he requests a trade for more opportunity elsewhere.

If Crocker weren't contracted he'd likely be gone (delisted) as well, but he's not going anywhere.

I’m quite surprised so many of you are writing off Tim Broomhead. I’m actually a big fan of Broomie and feel he has not had a clean a run. I think his quite classy and uses the ball very well. He just lacks a bit of pace but I think his skills can over come that deficiency.

I’d also consider trading Jamie Elliot right now while he still has good value now. Feel like we can cover for him
now and would prefer to chase a Michael Walters or Leon Davis type.

I always think of him is pretty quick.

Blair, Oxley and Smith delist.

Kirby and Broomhead to the rookie list.

Has there been any news on Kirby's health?

Nothing other than the club's continued monitoring of his situation.

The problem with blokes like Wills is that hes not worth anything at the trade table. It will be a Marly Williams pick 105 situation if someone wants him. Agree we are best of delisting and rookie'ing tho to free up list space. Smith should be delisted if hes not contracted....just no room in our team for an average player. Oxley is gone, surly

1. Daniel Wells(should have never signed him. Unquestionable talent but never showed enough hunger to be the best even at the Roos)

He’s contracted next year. Has there ever been any examples of such a player walking away from a contract? Or the club paying out such a player?

2. Levi Greenwood(all heart no class just a terrible user of the ball)

Levi is getting regular games. Players who get regular games don’t get delisted.

3. Alex Fasolo(great goal sense but just not at the level or consistency we need)

He’s a delisted free agent. We’ll likely get a compensation pick for him (3rd round?) so losing him wouldn’t really affect how deep into the draft we go.

4.) Jarryd Blair(love what he has contributed but feel like the game has moved past him)

Agreed. Experienced players who are fit but can’t get a game are usually let go.

Agreed for same reason as Blair.

All aforementioned players are probably depth, but I think that cutting too hard into depth players is a bad idea.

Developing players who are depth are typically retained (Appleby), Experienced players who are depth are typically not (Blair)

Worth remembering that the following players due to return are good depth (or the players they displace are good depth) ...

Elliott
Treloar
Aish
DeGoey
Wells

I think so

I think Oxley and Broomhead are first in line (Broomhead to be rookied), ...

IIRC rookies con’t count, and Oxley is a rookie.

I’d say the first in line would be Kirby.

Id be annoyed if Kirby isnt at least rookie'd. *subject to heart condition, but on talent he is deffo someone we dont have much of. Even our small forwards arnt really the crumbing type
