Doesn’t the AFL mandate that it has to be at least 3? I think Oxley and Broomhead are first in line (Broomhead to be rookied), followed possibly by Smith and Blair, so there’s 4 fairly easy ones. Not a big fan of Greenwood but it’d be a surprise to see him go after playing so much and Wells is contracted for next year.
Pretty sure Wells will retire with a 500k AFL handshake (paid by the AFL) for a career ending injury, i know Swan got a big payout for a similar injury and had similar service as well, Wells won't be on anywhere near 500k if he stays assuming his contract was performance based.

This is where I'd guess the club might be heading with our OOC players:

Out Of Contract 2018

1 Alex Fasolo - trade (hopefully for a 2nd round pick?) or re-sign (1 year)
5 Jamie Elliott - re-sign (2-3 years)
6 Tyson Goldsack - re-sign (1 year)
8 Tom Langdon - re-sign (2-3 years)
11 Jarryd Blair - delist
15 Lynden Dunn - retire or re-sign (1-2 years)
19 Levi Greenwood - re-sign (1 year) or trade / delist

23 Sam McLarty - re-sign (2 years)
26 Josh Daicos - re-sign (2 years)
27 Kayle Kirby - retire or rookie list?
29 Tim Broomhead - re-sign (1 year) or retire?

30 Darcy Moore - re-sign (2 years)
31 Flynn Appleby - re-sign as rookie (1 year)
32 Will Hoskin-Elliott - re-sign (3 years)
40 Josh Smith - probably trade / delist, maybe resign for 1 year as depth player.
41 Brody Mihocek - promote / re-sign (2 years), wont get away with leaving him on the rookie list as he'll draw interest from other clubs
43 Adam Oxley - delist
44 Jack Madgen - re-sign as rookie (1 year)

(anticipated outcome is first for players who wont definitely be re-signed)

Even though Wills is contracted until next year I also would not be surprised if he requests a trade for more opportunity elsewhere.

If Crocker weren't contracted he'd likely be gone (delisted) as well, but he's not going anywhere.
We won't get a second rounder for Fasolo with his medical history, both body and mind, 3rd rounder if we're lucky IMO, i'd be happy to give him another year if he's keen to stay though.

Of those out of contract:

Alex Fasolo - assuming he gets a contract offer I would let him walk and see if it nets us any compo picks. (If we signing a FA/RFA - it wont, if we aren't then might get a 3rd rounder where pts could be helpful for Quaynor). If he doesn't get a contract and is willing to stay for cheap then I would have no problem keeping him around. Isnt old and still has the talent to perform at this game. Is good depth if other guys move into the midfield, or if Elliot walks as a FA.

Tyson Goldsack & Lyndon Dunn
- 2 names not getting much mention in this thread. I reckon greater than 50% chance one or both retire.
- Goldy might be able to save his career with a late game this year, but I wouldn't be optimistic. Maybe rookie, or a minimum contract.
- Dunn has much more value but depends entirely on his body. Could very easily see him put on a player/coach contract to keep him on minimum salary cap impact next year.

Jarryd Blair - surely done. Maynes resurgence and the performances of our small forward fleet will call the end to his AFL career. Hopefully stays on the Pies VFL list.

Levi Greenwood - just depends on contract. Wont be a priority to keep, but is a good fringe-22 player who still has a couple of years at AFL. Either keep him cheap or let him walk for a bigger contract elsewhere.

Kayle Kirby - depends on health. As long as he doesnt have to retire, I hope we rookie him at the absolute least.

Tim Broomhead - hopefully rookied or cheap spot on the main list.

Josh Smith - probably delisted.

Adam Oxley - probably delisted, but as a rookie doesnt count towards the 3 main-list spots we need to open up by the draft. However hes been emergency quite a few times, so selectors must think he's still thereabouts - could be re-rookied.

Wells - depends on cap hit of a buyout. (Hopefully 2019 was a discounted year with bonuses) - I don't think he would take a buyout for less than his contract. Also with the AFL's cap rules, i dont think a buyout in 2018 will really give us more room in 2019, unless we do other shuffling:
Eg. If we are at 95% cap in 2018 - we have 105% for 2019. (Extra 500k) Add his 500k to his 2018 salary and we go to 100%, and back down to 100% for 2019 - doesnt make any difference to our actual available room next year unless we can add money to 2018 and still remain at or under the 95%.
All said and done, I reckon hes on the list next year.

What is this career ending injury he'll get?

Id be annoyed if Kirby isnt at least rookie'd. *subject to heart condition, but on talent he is deffo someone we dont have much of. Even our small forwards arnt really the crumbing type

I’m assuming the rumours and scuttlebutt are true the Kirby won’t be able to play again due to his heart condition. Given that he’s not even training, that would support those rumours.

I think so

IIRC rookies con’t count, and Oxley is a rookie.

I’d say the first in line would be Kirby.

I assume he meant that you have to create space on the rookie list to enable players like Broomy or Kirby or Goldsack or Dunn to be rookied, hence Oxley counts.

+1

i'd be happy to give him another year if he's keen to stay though.

IMO he’ll be of a lot more use to other clubs and get paid accordingly.

It seemed strange at the time that we weren’t picking him even when he was fit, but it’s worked out OK.

He's already got it, pretty much the same injury Swan had and he decided he couldn't play through the pain so called it quits.

Hmmmm, not so sure about that.

Don't think there will be too many changes this year

Senior list out:
Blair (retire)
Kirby (retire)
Broomhead (delist)
Fasolo (free agency)

Senior In:
1st round pick
Quaynor
Kelly
Mihocek (upgrade)

Rookie list out:
Oxley (delist)
Mihocek (promote)

Rookie list in:
Broomhead ?
Collingwood VFL (Wellings, Hore?)
or NGA player (Atu B)
or external rookie

Though they are flawed i think Smith and Greenwood survive because of their fitness, adaptability and discipline on field. They provide decent depth for another year, are good trainers, etc.

Goldsack retained for leadership and to be VFL depth like Blair has largely been year.

Dunn very very safe on the list.

Crocker, Wills, Wells contracted still. Worth nothing but late junk picks on the trade table. Stay for now.

If we get Lynch I'll have to rewrite this...

Really hope we move some of these players on. Don’t believe they will help us get to a premiership. Not all bad players but we need to get to the next levels.

Players I hope we move on

1. Daniel Wells(should have never signed him. Unquestionable talent but never showed enough hunger to be the best even at the Roos)

2. Levi Greenwood(all heart no class just a terrible user of the ball)

3. Alex Fasolo(great goal sense but just not at the level or consistency we need)

4.) Jarryd Blair(love what he has contributed but feel like the game has moved past him)

5.) josh smith(A very Buckley type player. Extremely hard working and great runner but I don’t see much potential. Might be a bit harsh but feels like his in the mould Levi Greenwood, Jackson Ramsay & co who are albeit a hard workers arnt quite at the level required to win a premiership)

Thoughts?
Bit harsh on Greenwood. He is a grunt players and gives 100% every game. Good depth. I agree with the others.

One idbe happy to move on is Faz. I've always been suss on Fasolo. I think he reminds people of Didak and that's why they like him - on potential. I think he's a tease and think we are better off getting games into other players (as we are doing this year).

I don't see why it wouldn't.
Yeah, guess it depends on his insurance. I hope he does retire. Too inconsistent and seems to have lost it in his last couple of games.

Probably need to balance this against what he brings to the club in terms of experience on the younger player. Also not sure if it would change our salary cap or if the contract still counts?

Pretty sure Swan was contracted the following season, i have no idea if it was added to the cap, i'm thinking not.

Wells - His body is shot! And when he's been back and had shocker (twice this year out of 4 games) he has been a complete liability. It's been sad. IIRC he was brought for his forward 50 entry polish .... but we seem to be doing that fine without him. If he is kept, it'll be the benefit for team off field and gleaning his experience and class for the young kids.

Levi - he has a role. he's a hard nut and we probably only have Taylor Adams in that ilk.

Faz - he's become a fringe player but IMO a much required player... he has the ability to become in the 22 again..... if he wants to stay.

Blairy - he'll be great as a main stay in the VFL and around the club. AFL is not an option and no one will pick him up.

Josh Smith - he has a role as a fringe player cog. He's 24, he smashed it in the pre-season with his running and I couldn't imagine on a large pay packet. Maybe rookie him.

Oxley - man I saw him in the 2nd's about 6 weeks back and I thought .... .heck!!! ... what the hell happened? He showed so much potential. I was surprised he's been named an emergency.

Broomhead - I've always liked Broomy, I've always thought in a very good side he'll bob up and kick the odd bag .... which strangely enough JT has done that. I thought Broomy though, like a lot of the boys this year, was clicking. He has a role IMO.

The type of players who will get us to a Premiership are either ...

(1) The Treloar / Adams / WHE / Crisp types who we trade in, but we need currency to get them, and none of the players you listed are that currency.

(2) The Phillips / Maynard / JT / Grundy types who we get through the draft and typically need 4+ Pre-seasons before they’re strong contributors (When do you want that Premiership?)

(3) The Stephenson / Beams / Sidebottom types who get drafted and make immediate impact - and how often do we get those? If it were that easy, every club would be doing it.

Blair
Kirby
Goldsack
Broomhead
Smith

I believe wont be on the senior list next year. Goldsack, Broomhead may be rookied.

I think Fasolo will go to WA

That's 6 already. Probably dont need any more than that.

I personally would not offer another contract to Greenwood but I am probably in the minority there.

Out of contract
1 Alex Fasolo - Free Agent. We are likely to lose him for nothing.
5 Jamie Elliott - Re-sign for 1 year.
6 Tyson Goldsack - Delist. No point keeping him when Scharenberg has proved all season as a capable replacement.
8 Tom Langdon - Re-sign for 2 years.
11 Jarryd Blair - Delist.
15 Lynden Dunn - Re-sign for 1 year.
18 Travis Varcoe - Delist. I think he is cooked.
19 Levi Greenwood - Re-sign for 1 year on a minimum contract.
23 Sam McLarty - Re-sign for 2 years.
26 Josh Daicos - Re-sign for 2 years.
27 Kayle Kirby - Delist and re-rookie for 1 year, providing health is cleared.
29 Tim Broomhead - Delist and re-rookie for 1 year.
30 Darcy Moore - Re-sign for 2 years.
31 Flynn Appleby - Re-sign for 1 year as a rookie.
32 Will Hoskin-Elliott - Re-sign for 2 years.
40 Josh Smith - Delist.
41 Brody Mihocek - Re-sign for 2 years promoted rookie.
43 Adam Oxley - Delist
44 Jack Madgen - Re-sign for 1 year as a rookie.

OFF Senior List: Fasolo (FA), Goldsack (Delist), Blair (Delist), Varcoe (Delist), Kirby (Delist), Broomhead (Delist), Smith (Delist)
ON Senior List: Michocek, 6 additional new players (either via draft or traded in)

OFF Rookie List: Michocek (Promoted), Oxley (Delist)
ON Rookie List: Kirby (Re-drafted), Broomhead (Re-drafted)

Retained Rookie: Appleby, Madgen

If we need to create another senior list spot, we can give Crocker the Oxley treatment. Delist and re-draft as a rookie.

Given there's no longer a need to upgrade rookies we'd be better off keeping Mihocek on the rookie list for another couple of years to maximise our cap space. I'd give him a heavily front ended 3 year deal with the bulk of the money paid in years 1 & 2.

Retire
Goldsack ( Love him to stick around in some sense)
Wells

Delist
Blair
Smith
Kirby
Look for 1 more and promote Mihocek

Unsure about our other rookies

Appleby is a keeper, shown more than enough.

Hey mate what's with the username to avatar, are you my long lost twin? Kale is my favourite vegetable as well...

There was talk that we'd be de-listing Kirby at seasons end. If that's the case, my Bigfooty career is over before it began.

I'm trying to hide my pain with Kale so I don't look silly. Is it working?
