If you had to improve you team some where where would it be? Defense, midfield or forward. Unfortunately being a W.C. supporter I have to say all.

If West Coast had a consistent CHF all-season would be right up in the race for the finals. Maybe not in the 8, but not stuck down were we are.
Of course i am referring to Mitchell White.
A Side without a CHF is like a plane without wings. It just isn't going to fly.
I feel that of all the injuries in the second half of the season, the injury to Mitchell White was what hurt us the most. Even though Wirrpunda is undoubtebly the better player, we really lacked a target across half-forward, which is the most important position on the field.
There is not 1 team in the top 8 who doesn't have a good half-forward;
Essendon: Hird/Lucas
Carlton: Whitnall/Kouta
Melbourne: Green/Neitz/Schwarz
Kangaroos: Carey
Bulldogs: Grant/Darcy
Geelong: Mensch/Bizzell
Brisbane: Molloy/Lynch
Hawthorn: Holland
All of those players are high quality.
Now look at the teams out of the eight;
Tigers: Ottens/Gale (thats why their contendors)
Swans: Goodes (normally plays in the backline, but when he moves to half-forward the swans are a much better team)
Adelaide: Robran/Welsh (disapointing)
Fremantle: Fewster (nothing special)
West Coast: White (injured all year)/Gehrig (incositent)
Magpies: who cares
Port: Tredrea (biggest disapointment of 2000)
St Kilda: Leowe (past his best)

There you can see where West Coast's problem lied in 2000. If White was there for the whole year, i would say we would at least be constesting for a final berth.

We always here people saying no Carey no Roos because they think he is such a champion player that he makes the roos.
The reason that the 'no carey no roos' theory is right almost 100% is because they have no one to replace him at CHF and have no delivery into the forward line and pagan's paddock falls apart without a good CHF, not because that Carey is a champion player (which he is) that totally makes the club.
If Carey was a rover, then we would never hear 'no carey no roos'. Thats why we never hear
no crawford, no hawks'. no buckley no pies (even though the pies struggle to win with buckley). I've never heard 'no voss no lions'.
If these players were CHF's then we would hear it all the time, because once you have no CHF than delivery into the forward line will dry up and goals are hard to get by.

That may have been a little to understand all that, i complicated that way more than i needed to. Anyway, there is only 1 reason the Eagles aren't at least contesting for one of the finals spots is because we have not had a CHF for the whole year.

I dont think we need to really improve in any position. Our attack will be good next year when everyone is healthy. White at CHF, Cummings at FF, Ph Matera as a crumbing forward means we'll always find goals, remember early this year when we were consistently scoring over 20 goals, they were all healthy then.

Our Midfield is going to need some help in the next few years but it will be good next year. We have Cousins Kemp and Matera, also Braun will be back from knee surgery and Rintoul is handy.

Defence should be adequate next year also with Morrison Banfield Jakovich and Metropolis across half back and McIntosh young Read and Wirripunda back fully fit so i think we'll be ok next year.

With Gardiner in the ruck and Turnball finding a new lease on life and some good youngsters coming through i do seriously think if the injury bug doesnt hit us again we'll be in the 8 next year.

All of this is prior to trades of course seen as some of the names i mentioned are trade bait i think.

Brisbane need to get a reliable older experienced ruck. Keating is still injured , he may never play again.
They also need to get a CHF. They got rid of Bartlett without giving him a go, now he is firing on all cylinders at the Doggies.

They also need to do something in the admin section. They seem to have probs in understanding how to market to the average Queenslander.Quenslanders are extremely paricial, we should be advertsing the Lions as your Queensland team. They just need to look at the Rugby state of origin. This week we have had nothing to advertise in the paper. I haven't seen anything on the tv. Mind you last weeks ad, for the freo match was for a match in 95 between the Bears and Hawthorn. Dumb.
They also need to lower their prices, it costs a small fortune for membership for a family of 4. Over 700. next year will be worse with GST and the extra match against Melbourne.
They missed aperfect opportunity to get free air when the Davis Cup was in town. The players were kicking around an afl footy as part of their warm up. Not a Lion to be seen. But PAt Rafter has requested tickets to Saturdays game. He is Lions supporter.

Adelaide need

1 or 2 tall forwards (small ask). We may have 1 already in Ian Perrie. He is about the right size, plays in front, can take a mark & hits the ball hard. He was going well this year until he hurt his shoulder.

1 tall defender.

2 wingmen.

Too many areas to mention

Here it goes
- About 2 or 3 young key position players - capable of holding down CHF/CHB in the future
- A ruckman - Either Back up for Spider or to allow him to play in the forward line
- A crumbing small forward
- A few more tall defenders

That will do for now, but we have a LOT of work to do.
